Both Kinds of Standards – VARIOUS OUTLETS

  • Criticizing the judge at a Trump trial threatens our legal system, say the journos slamming the other judge at the other Trump trial.

For weeks now, journalists have been in a collective uproar about Trump, Republicans in Congress, and anyone in conservative media who dared criticize Judge Juan Merchan for the way he managed the kangaroo trial that just concluded in Manhattan. CNN's media maven Oliver Darcy is emblematic of this ardor:

Prominent right-wing media figures immediately flooded the public discourse Thursday with extreme and disturbing rhetoric after Trump was found guilty on 34 felony counts. Media personalities erupted in anger, blaming everyone from Judge Juan Merchan and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg to President Joe Biden and the entire U.S. justice system for the "disgraceful" conviction. The furious bluster reverberating across right-wing media still carried its intended effect, burning away public trust in America's core institutions and leaving a lasting impact on the legitimacy of the rule of law in the U.S.

And on he went. Allow me to now notify Ollie, and the other high-strung members of the press industry, how pathetic this line of criticism has been. Not only have they been in full-throated outrage at Justice Samuel Alito for weeks now, but in another court case involving Donald Trump, journalists have had no compunction at all in leveling criticisms toward Judge Aileen Cannon any time she rules in a fashion that helps out Trump.

Artisanally-Crafted Narratives – SLATE

  • Now, imagine if Johnson had actually said this; Oh, wait, you already imagined it!

Speaker Mike Johnson was on "Fox & Friends" explaining how he was displeased with the guilty verdict, and during the visit, he mentioned the possibility that this could be appealed and taken up by the Supreme Court. In it, he stated how he knows a number of the Justices, and he felt like they also might have concerns:

I think that the Justices on the court – I know many of them personally – I think they are deeply concerned about that, as we are. So I think they'll set this straight. It's going to take a while ... this will be overturned, guys, there's no question about it, it's just going to take some time to do it.

Now, note his words here. He says he knows some Justices, and he thinks they are concerned, and then mentions the lengthy process in the appeal of the case. What he does not say is that he met with the Justices to plot on how to overturn the case.

However at Slate, Mark Joseph Stern announces that is what took place, and he declares that these Justices must – of course – recuse themselves from the case should it arrive at SCOTUS.

So we have moved from there is no inflation, to inflation is up but manageable, to now we are on to it happening, but we knew it would happen, so it is not a problem after all.

Low-Octane Gaslighting – MSNBC

  • At this point, she should just resort to reading other outlets' headlines.

It has been a tough month of May for Jen Psaki, with repeated verbal veering away from facts. For the latest, she somehow tries to come out to claim that no election campaigns coerce the media into killing off negative stories. The Hunter Biden laptop story was smothered just one election ago. We are still aware of that reality.

The only wiggle room she may have with this claim is that possibly the news outlets are not paid off to kill stories, they do it out of a sense of duty for a party.

Stealth Story Evolution – MSNBC

  • We believe the word you are looking for here is "expunged."

Perhaps Ms. Psaki's biggest flub of the month was the discovery that she had a passage of her book that wrongly stated President Biden never checked his watch during the ceremony of the fallen Marines. (That this passage in her book was said to be her addressing misinformation was especially mirthful.)

In explaining the error, she said at the time, it was a case of getting time points wrong, and her publisher acknowledged the problem and that it would be corrected in future editions.

Well, the first case of this has been seen, as the e-book editions have been repaired. The entire passage involving Biden looking at his watch has been completely removed from the editions.
