The Democratic Party’s civil war is set to heat up as the moderate wing of the party is working desperately to prevent the Democratic Socialist faction from seizing more influence.
This war has been brewing for almost a decade, and with the midterm elections, it appears it could be coming to a head as far leftist candidates continue racking up primary victories.
The moderate establishment is working on a plan to counteract the advance of its left flank, according to the New York Times.
The embattled establishment of the Democratic Party searched furiously for a political reset after Dr. Abdul El-Sayed’s progressive victory in Michigan handed the party’s long-dominant moderate wing its most painful defeat of the year.
Some strategists urgently pressed to adopt a sharper edge to tap into the fury among Democratic voters that was felling its centrist candidates. Others wanted to attack democratic socialism, undercutting a budding movement now set to have far more than a toehold in the next Congress. Yet another young democratic socialist ousted an incumbent congressman in Detroit on Tuesday.
“We are preparing for the next war that is coming,” said Jonathan Cowan, the president of Third Way, a leading centrist Democratic group, revealing to The New York Times a new $15 million effort between now and 2028 to discredit democratic socialism.
Dr. El-Sayed’s win was not the blowout that some pre-election polls had predicted. But his narrow nomination in one of the country’s signature swing states still represented a critical moment for the party’s middle, which had previously sought to cast the far left’s successes as contained within the country’s most urban and liberal corridors.
Their fear: Dr. El-Sayed was paving a path for a progressive to seize the party’s presidential nomination in 2028 — and then go on to lose the general election.
“It is deeply troubling to see radical, far-left candidates winning in places that are potentially presidential swing states,” Mr. Cowan added.
🚨 CNN data confirms what we’ve been tracking: Socialism is rising fast inside the Democrat Party.

Positive views of socialism among Democrats jumped from 50% in 2010 to 66% today. DSA-backed candidates and messaging are clearly moving the base.
Among all voters? Just 30% view…
The Washington Post reported that moderate Democrats launched the Promise to America initiative after democratic socialist candidates won several House primaries. Over a dozen House members and candidates signed on to support capitalism, fiscal discipline, strong borders and pride in the United States as a way to push back against the party’s leftward lurch.
Jessica Killin, a Democrat candidate in Colorado, said, “They should not be the face of our party.”
“We need to be organized and clear in our vision.” Rep. Tom Suozzi (NY-3) said, “We’re seeing a lot of results from the country from the far left and the far right, and they’re organized. I mean, you have to give them credit.” However, he stressed that this “kind of campaign and that type of ideology is not going to play with the people in our districts.”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY-8) has also emphasized the importance of focusing on the political center to win elections. “In order for Democrats to go from the minority into the majority so we can end this national nightmare, we do have to own the center and win over centrist voters, independent voters, and swing voters,” he said.
I hate to break it to the moderates, but this reckoning isn’t going away anytime soon — if ever. Their voters are disillusioned with the party’s inability to push an agenda that benefits normal Americans instead of pandering to the elites and special interests. This is why so many of their voters are identifying as Democratic Socialists nowadays. They are looking for something different at a time when the Democrat establishment is hellbent on maintaining the status quo.
