We spent October waiting for an October surprise. But according to everyone’s favorite faux-conservative commentator, Tucker Carlson, November is when things are really going to get interesting. The disgraced former Fox News host claimed on social media Sunday that he has it on good authority that President Trump is “within days” of launching a nuclear strike on Iran.
Yes, a nuclear strike. I’ll let that sink in for a moment, because apparently this is what passes for serious political commentary now.
According to Tucker Carlson, Israeli intelligence has found that Iran is attempting to rebuild its nuclear program beneath Pickaxe Mountain, which should come as little surprise, because this is Iran we are talking about.
But according to the former Fox News host, conventional munitions like the bunker-busting bombs dropped on Iran last year cannot penetrate the 300 feet of solid granite separating the surface from the nuclear facilities, leaving a nuclear strike as the only possible solution. He claims Netanyahu has been advocating for precisely that in daily phone calls with the president, in part to help secure his reelection as prime minister of Israel.
Under pressure from Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Trump administration may be within days of launching a nuclear strike on Iran. The target would be Pickax Mountain in central Iran, where Israeli intelligence claims the Iranian government has restarted its nuclear enrichment program. No conventional weapon in the American arsenal can penetrate 300 feet of solid granite to destroy the tunnels where enrichment is supposedly taking place. The only military option is a nuclear strike. Netanyahu has been pushing hard for one. “Bibi calls Trump about it every day,” says an informed observer. Netanyahu is cornered and desperate. After last week’s election results, he can’t form a government unless Trump intervenes directly in Israeli politics and brokers a deal with other parties that gives Netanyahu 61 seats in the Knesset. Otherwise, he is out as prime minister and on his way to ignominy, investigations and possibly jail. Netanyahu must stay close to Trump. He needs this war. To that end, he’s applied maximum pressure to his closest allies in the administration, including Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and CENTCOM commander Brad Cooper. Both oppose a negotiated settlement to the war they’ve so grievously mismanaged; both are pushing to restart major combat operations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and CIA director John Ratcliffe are also following Netanyahu’s lead, as are leaders of the Democratic Party. In a recent meeting on the subject, former president Barack Obama said he opposes the current Iran peace deal being drafted in Doha. The rest of America’s longtime allies in the Middle East are terrified by the prospect of more war. On September 27th, Netanyahu flew secretly to Abu Dhabi to enlist the UAE in his lobbying effort for a final attack on Iran. The Emiratis refused. After eight months of conflict, Gulf economies are teetering. So are global energy and fertilizer markets. They won’t recover soon. Globally, there are a total of about 850 supertankers used to transport oil from producers to the rest of the world. In October alone, 11 of them were badly damaged in Hormuz. At this pace, a global depression is imminent. A nuclear strike would radically accelerate the destruction. Fallout from a ground explosion at Pickax Mountain would contaminate the Persian Gulf, poisoning the water supply for 100 million people. And those are just some of the immediate consequences for the region. The rest of the world is every bit as exposed. No country other than the United States has ever used a nuclear weapon in war. Some would like to. An American nuclear attack on Iran would set a new precedent. The Russians have already told at least two other governments that an American nuclear strike on Iran would free them to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine. Pakistan and India would be tempted to do the same against each other, as would North Korea against Seoul. After the first nuclear strike, World War Three is inevitable. That war would be short and final. We’ve been sleepwalking toward this moment for months. Since February, the administration has quietly rewritten America’s nuclear doctrine to make first use of so-called “battlefield nukes” easier and therefore more likely. No one in Washington in either party seems bothered by this. Now we’re on the brink of it. Close observers say Trump is likely to decide by next weekend whether or not to use nuclear weapons. That would be November 7, six days from now. To his credit, he’s hesitating. At the moment, Trump is listening to his vice president, JD Vance, and to his envoy and friend Steve Witkoff, both of whom argue a deal with Iran can be made. They’re right, though it won’t be simple. The Iranians are famously frustrating to negotiate with under any circumstances, and elements of that government have become more radical since Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his family were killed in February. After decades of isolation, even relatively moderate Iranian leaders seem confused by how decisions are made in the West. (There is a widespread belief in Tehran, for example, that the United States government controls Israel.) But overall, people who have spoken to decision-makers in Iran say there is consensus there that more war is bad for everyone and a deal is worth making. One group that hasn’t been consulted so far is the global population — the hundreds of millions of people who will be killed along with their children if Trump is pushed by Netanyahu into launching a nuclear strike next week. Now would be the time for them to speak up.

Now, even in this shortened version of his more than 600-word post, there are some major problems to point out.
First and foremost, a nuclear bomb cannot penetrate 300 feet of solid granite, either. And if his theory is that the shockwave will do damage, he has yet to explain why that requires a nuclear bomb.
That lack of explanation is especially interesting coming from someone like Tucker, who declares all uses of nuclear weapons immoral (because he’s a Christian) and who criticizes the United States’ decision to use them twice to end World War II. Yet for someone who claims to be so morally conflicted and so concerned about these weapons, he seems all but incapable of explaining why a nuclear strike would be the only rational option left, before telling everyone the president is “within days” of launching one.
And that brings us to the other problem: accountability. This isn’t Carlson’s first time making this sort of prediction, and it’s time even his own followers started holding him to account.
🚨Tucker Carlson warning Trump "may be within days launching a nuclear strike on Iran" might mean something... If he hadn't been making THE EXACT SAME hysterical prediction monthly since April.

We need to start a doomsday panic scorecard. Every time someone declares a civil war, or climate apocalypse, or nuclear armageddon & WW3 for the 9,000th time, it never comes to pass, but we just move on, so 5 months later they do it again, and people fall for it, again. The apocalypse isn't happening in your lifetime, folks. The real shit is some overpaid bureaucrat in your municipal water district is gonna get lazy with their emails, and your reservoir is gonna be empty when some other overpaid state park bureaucrat forgets to monitor a smoldering plant for an entire week, then your entire town burns up in a wildfire, your grandma burns alive and then 400 more people die from accelerated cancers from the toxic smoke. Buying into these theatrical fantasies of global catastrophe only serves our corrupt government, distracting you from the true menace in your life. It's so exhausting. I used to indulge in these catastrophic conspiracy theories, but I had to learn the hard way that it's just plain old government incompetence that's the biggest threat to your daily life. Whether it's getting stabbed in the neck by some zombie that your taxpayer dollars are paying to keep drugged up, a foreign truck driver with a fake CDL issued by your state DMV plowing through your family minivan, or the esophageal cancer you get from the carcinogenic lining in the save-the-turtles paper straws they make you use...despite all the Chicken Littles throughout time, warning of some cinematic end to your life, it's communists in government who've quietly racked up 100M+ body count in the last century. Stop indulging these cartoonish macabre fantasies and get real.

Of course, Tucker isn’t after accountability, truth, or helpful political commentary. This looks far more like an attempt to slam Republicans right before the midterms in hopes that Democrats take back Congress. The so-called conservative increasingly seems to have no role left in politics other than that of a spoiler.
But the problem goes beyond Tucker. The same scrutiny should apply to anyone seriously claiming that nuclear weapons are on the table in this conflict with Iran, including Democrats who were quick to make similar accusations at the outset of Operation Epic Fury.
If you’re going to tell people the president is about to launch a nuclear strike, you had better be able to explain what it would accomplish, produce evidence that it is actually being considered, or even be able to logically explain how it would at all accomplish anything. Otherwise, you aren't doing much more than making an accusation you can’t support and relying on the word “nuclear” to do the hard work for you.
