The Trade War With Canada Just Escalated Further

President Donald Trump plans to hike tariffs on more Canadian products at the start of next year, as the neighbors to the north exited trade negotiations at the last minute on Friday night. 

The announcement comes as Ontario Premier Doug Ford is threatening to "cut" imports that could impact American energy supply, according to the Associated Press.

Vehicles such as trucks and cars of any size, steel, and “automotive parts” will soon be subjected to a 50% tariff. 

In a Monday morning Truth Social post, the president said that “Canada has been ripping off the United States of America for years” and said that “ridiculously high tariffs” against farmers have created a major trade deficit that it “not sustainable.” 

“Canada will be treated like a State no longer! On Trade, and in other ways, also, they are among the worst Nations in the World to deal with. They feel entitled, and yet, WE DON’T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US!” he wrote. 

Hockey sticks and wine are just some of the goods impacted by the tariffs that went into effect last week, Townhall previously reported.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a statement saying that the “important progress” in recent trade talks with the U.S. did not go far enough.

“As a result, this evening, I have decided to suspend trade negotiations with the U.S. and have directed Canada’s negotiators to return to Ottawa,” Carney stated. 

“They have worked hard, in good faith, to defend the interests of Canadians throughout these negotiations up until the very last minute. However, last-minute changes in the U.S. proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal,” he added, saying that there would be an exact “match” on the U.S. tariffs. 

The Office of the United States Trade Representative stated Friday that “despite the U.S. offer to Canada to receive the best treatment of any major exporter to our market, new demands and walk backs of other commitments by Canada have upended the careful balance reached in the past days.” 

“In addition, Canada is continuing to maintain its prolonged retaliation against the United States, including, among other things, flat-out prohibitions on certain American goods and services,” the office continued.
