Were We Spared Another Gun Control Lecture?

Is it because the left is more concerned about trying to gin up support for the destruction of Israel, or is it because the more we learn about the Maine mass shooting — the more it undercuts the anti-gun narrative? Maybe it’s a little bit of both. Robert Card opened fire at a bar/grille and bowling alley in Lewiston, Maine, on October 25, killing at least 18 people. He was a trained firearms instructor and an Army reservist. From the start, the left was at the ready to circulate the usual anti-gun talking points.

Everyone held their tongues until he was found because you knew they were ready to thread a race lecture into the mix. Card, a white man, was about to become the left’s semester lesson for how AR-15s and white men make for catastrophic results. Card went missing after his killing spree, being discovered two days later dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. It might have been another river of nonsense from this group, but Israeli forces formally invaded Gaza on October 28. Still, the latest developments show that the laws on the books would’ve prevented this tragedy.

As with most mass shooters over the past 25 years, Card exhibited severe mental illness, with him reporting hearing voices and threatening to attack a local National Guard base. His behavior was so aberrant that he was committed to a mental health clinic for two weeks last summer. Card was known to law enforcement, with knowledge of his “veiled threats.” To boot, Card’s family had contacted police months before the October shootings about his deteriorating mental condition.

These shootings were preventable. The laws on the books were there, but enforcement was either lacking or non-existent. Whatever the case, there were opportunities to stop Card and get him help. Mental health remains one of the hallmark characteristics of most mass shooters as of late. It also doesn’t help that everyone and their mother knows that our current care system for those dealing with mental health issues is laughably inadequate. Yet, we can’t have these policy debates because the left would instead yell about guns, white folks, Donald Trump, and how AR-15s are scary.

It's not about mental health; it’s the guns; these folks howl after every shooting. And then, they shut up when the shooter turns out to be a total nutcase who could’ve been stopped. That appears to be the case here. Before the victims’ next of kin were notified, there were some folks on social media trying to push anti-gun nonsense. It got drowned out with the manhunt news.

It's about mental health, liberals. We’ll be waiting here for that talk when you give up on trying to confiscate firearms from law-abiding Americans.
