Both Kinds of Standards – THE NEW YORK TIMES

President Biden returned from his holiday vacation to the White House, and, after one day, he promptly left for another vacation in the Caribbean. Absent is any tabulating of how many vacation days the president has taken (as opposed to the running tally we always were provided under Trump), not to mention the sympathetic approach to what Joe is enduring while on break; “Work has a way of intruding on even the most secluded getaways, especially if you’re the commander in chief.”

Also absent is any hand-wringing or implications that there could be influence being leveraged, or any other nefarious after-effects from the Bidens staying at a resort owned by a billionaire who is a major Biden donor. Funny, because we recall all year hearing how it was a problem when SCOTUS Justice Clarence accepted trips and vacation stays from one of his friends who is a wealthy individual.

Blue-Anon – BBC

The need for Donald Trump felt in the press is more than obvious. As proof of this desperation is the way the BBC has come up with the latest “controversy” involving the former president. It involves, of all things, his brief, five-second appearance in the holiday movie “Home Alone 2.” Apparently, the director, Chris Columbus, claims the production was “bullied” into including the man in the movie in exchange for filming inside his then-owned Plaza Hotel. This 3-year-old interview has cropped up on social media, and allegedly Trump was angry about this and made a post insisting the producers begged him to be in the film.

This...is allegedly a serious news item. Whenever the press acquires self awareness, somebody be sure to let us know.

Reporting on the Mirror – POYNTER INSTITUTE

Think back over the past year how often we had been gaslit by the press about how wondrous Joe Biden’s economy has been. (Even while the Democrat Party has worked to remove the use of "Bidenomics" in the press, for fear of his name being sullied.) Now consider this detail – if the economy is in such a great, dreamlike condition, why is it that the press industry is doing so horribly?

Poynter has a deep analysis on how horrible this year has been for media workers and provides a laundry list of news outlets that went through layoffs this year, and it is hardly comprehensive, as the mounting layoffs in December have not even been counted.

Body Checking the Fact-Checkers – POLITIFACT

For an end of the year compilation, PolitiFact provides us with it's top-15 most popular entries from 2023. These are not deeply thought out, penetrating, or important corrections that moved the needle politically or culturally.

Included are debunked items about Alexandria Ocaosio-Cortez’s net worth, a false claim about WhatsApp from Spain, Bill Gates spritzing our vegetables, and Elon Musk scanning the tesaticles of Tesla drivers. No fewer than THREE ENTRIES concerned claims that Michelle Obama is actually a man.

Pulitzer Prize Nomination – CBS NEWS

  • Are the proof-readers and editors all out for the holidays???

At CBS News, they report on the Biden administration suing border states because they are taking it under their own to enforce the border laws. That is to say, Biden is suing to prevent them from enforcing the law.

CBS presented this with a straight face, as if this headline was not completely bat-crap crazy, under the barest of analysis.
