The other day, I was speaking to a friend who had gone to Washington, D.C. on Jan. 6, 2021, to attend Donald Trump’s presentation and the accompanying rally. He was not among those who entered the Capitol, but he was involved in the day's activities and what transpired afterward.

On occasion, I will send him a link to one of my articles. Following one such link that I sent him, he wrote me back a letter that was so heartfelt and so on target that I felt it merited further reflection.

Never Seen Anything Like It

In all of his 73 years on earth, he said, he's never experienced an instance in which he questioned what it meant to live in America. He says that, with each passing day, the country in which he grew up increasingly looks more and more foreign to him. He sees laws that are flouted, primarily by Democrats, and go completely unpunished.

Whether it's rioting, looting, arson, or worse, he reads about district attorneys who decline to take a slam dunk case, bail reduced to zero for egregious crimes, and people who have committed violent acts being back on the street within 24 hours.

He has strong concerns about the fate of our children. He comments that if you have a five- or six-year-old, or for that matter a 15- or 16-year-old, somewhere along the line they're being indoctrinated. If not by one teacher, then by several; if not by one textbook, then by another.

Each day, in little ways, they're being taught to hate their country, their ethnicity if they are white, their history, and what Americans stand for. They are made to feel as if they are guilty of all the sins of the world since time began.

Without Course Correction

He contemplates what will become of our nation in another five or 10 years if we continue on this course. He is concerned about our ability to turn things around and at what cost. Will we need to fight a second Civil War? Will the internal, political cold war ever subside? Will even Liberals begin to see that Leftists and progressive policies weaken our nation and hinder the individuals they're designed to help?

If the Left doesn't care what they destroy, he wonders if that is their end game: to reduce the United States to rubble. To have us become just another country on earth, nothing special, and to others not a place that is the best example of freedom.

He sees pictures of people in Cuba, Venezuela, China, and Iran sporting American flags as they demonstrate for freedom. Will it always be that way? Or, in time, will they no longer use the American flag as their symbol of hope and freedom because we no longer stand for hope and freedom?

The Ties That Used to Bind

Over the years, he has kept up with high school and college friends who lean left but is finding it arduous to engage in conversation with them. He has to steer clear of so many topics: the Biden administration, the southern border, Anthony Fauci, transgender politics, U.S. foreign policy, military preparedness, foreign aid, Ukraine, Russia, China, Hamas, inflation, X (formerly Twitter), electric vehicles, the 2024 election, women’s sports, and so much more.

Walking on eggshells is nobody's preference, but it's either that or giving up the friends. Seeking to offer solace, I say to him that at least 74.2 million people, those who voted for Donald Trump, feel much the same way as he does. So, in that regard, he is not alone.

It is different this time, you and I know that, and so do the 74.2 million others. Leftist infiltration and indoctrination have been ongoing for more than 70 years. They are relentless zealots. They believe that they are right on every issue down the line, will yield to nothing, and believe that conservatives are heathens who deserve whatever fate befalls them.

This is It

I told him that other chapters in American history looked bleak, and somehow we pulled through. The 2024 election, less than eight months away, will be a watershed moment. May we all do what we can to restore our country.
