Bible Passage: 1 Kings 19:1-12

Discussion Questions:

-- Why is it important to care for yourself when you are going through difficult times?

-- Why is it important to care for others when they are going through difficulties?

Food for Thought:

Depression is no respecter of persons. Anyone can become depressed. The truth be told, all of us go through times when we could use a lift in our spirits.

Contemporary gospel recording artist and music producer Kirk Franklin's "Smile" music video highlights how a person's relationship with Christ can affect his or her outlook on life. The lyrics, "Today's a new day…", "I almost gave up but a power that I can't explain fell from heaven like a shower…" and "while you're waiting and while you're praying -- smile" direct our focus to the fact that while every day is not going to be perfect, we have the reassurance that God is still working in our circumstances.

Depression can touch all our lives. It also can show us how to trust God to help us move from depression to hope. Approach God when you feel overwhelmed by what's going on in your life, knowing that God is not surprised by the struggles we go through on this earth. He is the one constant strong enough to handle everything we face. His presence is His promise, and it is also your hope.
