Who Railroaded the Amtrak Inspector General?

Watchdogs are an endangered species in the Age of Obama. The latest government ombudsman to get the muzzle: Amtrak Inspector General Fred Weiderhold. The longtime veteran employee was abruptly "retired" this month -- just as the government-subsidized rail service faces mounting complaints about its meddling in financial audits and probes.

Question the timing? Hell, yes.

On June 18, Weiderhold met with Amtrak officials to discuss the results of an independent report by the Washington, D.C., law firm Willkie, Farr and Gallagher. The 94-page report has been made publicly available through the office of whistleblower advocate Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa. It concluded that the "independence and effectiveness" of the Amtrak inspector general's office "are being substantially impaired" by the agency's Law Department.

Amtrak bosses have effectively gagged their budgetary watchdogs from communicating with Congress without pre-approval; required that all Amtrak documents be "pre-screened" (and in some cases redacted) before being turned over to the inspector general's office; and taken control of the inspector general's $5 million portion of federal stimulus spending.

Moreover, the report revealed, Amtrak regularly retained outside law firms shielded from IG reach. In another case, Amtrak's Law Department appeared to meddle in an inspector general investigation of an outside financial adviser suspected of inflating fees. The consultant ran to the Law Department when the IG demanded documents, and the Law Department repudiated the IG's instructions on complying with a subpoena.

These interventions (ongoing since 2007) have "systematically violated the letter and spirit of the Inspector General Act," according to Grassley. IG staffers now fear retaliation -- and with good reason. Their boss, Weiderhold, lost his job on the very day Amtrak received the Willkie, Farr and Gallagher report. It may be hot and humid in the rest of the Beltway, but every inspector general's office is feeling an Arctic chill.

The transparent sacking comes just as Amtrak is awash in more than $1.3 billion in new federal stimulus money. It comes on the heels of the unceremonious dismissal of Gerald Walpin, the AmeriCorps inspector general who dared to probe financial shenanigans by Obama cronies. (See "Obama's AmeriCrooks and Cronies Scandal," June 17, 2009.) And it comes on the heels of the stifling of veteran Environmental Protection Agency employee Alan Carlin, the researcher who dared to question the Obama administration's conventional wisdom on global warming.

As a retired Naval officer with over 25 years active service including two command tours, fleet staff and procurement, I have seen the wisdom & value of having an IG in a Government organization.

Action, or lack thereof, by the AMTRAK Legal Department should have immediately resulted in an investigation by the DOJ and suspension of all AMTRAK people who were party to their arrogance and total disrespect for the law.

It appears that either things have not changed in DC or their is a distinct lack of confrontational leadership in the IG community.

No one is above the law!!!

Obama style of course. Put VP Joe Biden in charge of making sure things work right at AMTRAK. VP Biden has done such a Great job with the Stimulus Bill. But I would think it is more important to the American People to reward Mrs. Malkin with some kind of Major Award, to encourage her to keep doing the great work for the Anmerican People that she is doing and that is apparent in every thing I read and hear from her.

It's truly astounding how pervasive the obstructionist tentacles are! They've got ALL the bases covered at EVERY level to block truth and genuine justice. The American people are being strangled by the Leviathan.

IT'S A COUP!

I'm beginning to think that people should stop working - to cut off tax revenues to Govt & go into all-out SELF-preservation mode. That military members should resign (they have been/are so abused & may be used against their fellow citizens soon) leaving the Elites to fend for themselves (or forced to bring back the draft - that will stir some sleeping citizens). We MUST ACT like Resistance Fighters in every small and large way. Our Govt is presently more tyrannous than the Brits at the time of our American Revolution. We can't just sit back and observe the downfall of everything around us. I think they WANT Civil War to break out. Though I don't want to see bloodshed, we have to find ways to halt this.

Great article, Michelle. As long as voices such as your's are still possible to be heard, hope remains alive. God bless your future efforts. I wouldn't blame you (or Mike Savage or Rush) though if you fled the country; those who have the means perhaps should, and keep the conservative/Christian stance going from exile...? It may now be ANOTHER GENERATION before restoration of sanity, common sense, freedom, and prosperity.

For constantly keeping the facts before us. Now Obama is sacking the I.G.'s. Obama's tong developed a good plan to take over the country and so far it's working.

The OCM, Obama controlled media, is a marvel to behold! Except for a few stalwarts like you and a handful of others, Obama has the whole communications industry walking lock-step behind him. It took Hitler over three years to do this. Except for you stalwarts and talk radio, most of 300 million people don't have a clue about the disaster that awaits us.

F.A.Hayek reminded us that tyrants don't give up easily once they have established their cadre of troll folowers, then thugs, then the unconcionable murderers that get that great FEAR BALL rolling, a lot of blood will spill in getting his fingers off the throttle.

One of Hayek's chapters was "Why the Worst Get On Top". Certainly we have the absolute "worst" That ever made it to the White House

from the email: "Mr Cole explained that to do this you would need a truck FULL of batteries and a LNG tank as big as a car to make that happen and that there were problems with the laws of physics that prevented them from...
The Obama person interupted and said (quote)
The laws of physics? Whose rules are those, we need to change that. (Some of the others wrote down the law name so they could look it up.)
We have Congress and the administration. We can repeal that law, amend it, or use and executive order to get rid of that problem. That's why we are here, to fix these sor of issues."

hear about the morons O sent to tell the
experts how to make cars?

A man named David E. Cole, Chr. Center for Automotive Research told several stories at a breakfast meeting. He is an engineer with 30 years experience in the industry.

The morons O sent to 'save the auto industry'
and to tell men like Cole how to do their business.
Their demands were for an electric car but also able to run on liquid natural gas, with enough
'combined fuel to go 500 miles so we wouldn't need so many gas stations. They were quoting BTU's of LNG and battery life.." (note this is quoted from an email I rec'd reporting on David Coles speech and favorite story.)

You want to know where our tax Dollars are spent?
http://www.newswithviews.com/Stuter/stuter143.htm

Just as you stated in your post, most of the "Stimulus" money goes to pay back Obama supporters.

It is Chicago crooked politics, right down the line;

We need to put "FOR SALE" signs on Congress too.

You once boasted you had guns, (plural), and know how to used them.

Tell us about your guns and how you learned to use them.

Owning firearms seems very out of character for you.
You strike me as the kind who would run home and cower under your bed if you saw the picture of a pistol on a child's T shirt.

How do dictators take and keep control over their peons? They dismiss any opposition and put their people in their places. They use their power to get what they want.

Dear Leader has steadily done this ever since he was sworn in. Most of the bailout money was given to his cronies to assure his being in office in perpetuity.

He is unconstitutionally doing everything in his power to destroy the Republican Party so he can have a free ride and he is using our money to do it.

If you are a friend of this administration, you will end up a multimillionaire by the time he leaves office.

Will the taxpayers benefit from the outrageous spending that was supposedly justified by saying it was needed to salvage the economy and "save jobs"? NO that isn't working.

There is no accountability as to where the hundreds of billions of our hard earned tax dollars are actually going. I'll tell you, IMO they are being stolen by Obama cronies with the blessing of the White House.

2010 won't come soon enough, I just hope it won't be too late to save our beloved country from this America hating, lets destroy it now before anyone realizes what is happening administration. May God have mercy on us.

Thanks for the reply. I'm definitely no better as a person than the liberals who post here and I find it very curious that they think we will be swayed by arguments that only throw insults.

While I may laugh at their inanity, inside I really feel sorry for them if that is the best they can do.

I was just fooling around trying to make a standard liberal style argument. You know the type of argument where if you can’t refute the facts then attack the messenger. Obviously Malkin is lying because she used a person named McCain. Basic liberal logic as follows:

If A equals B
And B equals C
The answer must be 7 because the first two lines are lies.

Don’t you conservatives get it? It’s so obvious.
Oh man, my head hurts. How can liberals stand to think that way all the time? Geez their brains must be made of iron and cushioned by marshmallows.

P.S. I’ll make a point to look up Mr. McCain. Thanks for the tip.

Give Me Back My Money

I am tired of paying for the pet projects of both Parties.

Let my money go to my State ONLY.

Long live the 10th Amendment, repeal the 16th and 17th.

Screw the Federal Reserve, the Treasury, the Executive Branch, the Judiciary Branch, and the Congress.

I would use more filthy language, but I would be accused of using dirty lang. by Summers, et. al.

Do not call me a Republican.
Do not call me a Conservative.
Do not call me a holier-than-thou.
Do not call me Ma'am when I am a Ms.
Do not call me a Democrat.
Do not call me a Liberal or Progressive.
Do not call me a FemiNazi.
Do not call me a Socialist.
Do not call me a Martian.
You may call me a fiscally-conservative CONSTITUTIONALIST without "party" affiliation.

You can call me a young mother, who is afraid for the future of my children (who attend private schools) and the USA. I also do not find health care, even dental, to be cost-prohibitive.

Keep the 22nd Amendment and support term limits.

When iPods are a more worthy investment than health insurance, this Country is in for a world of hurt.

Thank you very much.
