Faced with escalating crime and chaos in the nation’s capital, Trump plans to reduce Washington, D.C.’s security funding by millions while simultaneously ordering federal law enforcement to boost their presence due to what he describes as the city’s “totally out of control” crime situation.
According to a recent grant notice from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), D.C.’s urban security funding will be cut by 44 percent year-over-year, down to $25.2 million. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which supervises FEMA, announced on Friday that it is reducing security funding for several major cities—including Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Jersey City—better to align resources with the "current threat landscape."
On Friday, President Trump ordered federal law enforcement agencies to begin patrolling Washington, D.C., a bold move to restore order and protect citizens in a city that has been plagued by violence and soft-on-crime policies. While local officials continue to pander to radical activists and defund the police, President Trump is making it clear that chaos will not be tolerated on his watch.
On Friday, President Trump took decisive action to restore order in the nation’s capital, ordering federal law enforcement to patrol the streets of Washington, D.C. for the next seven days to combat the city’s escalating violent crime crisis. The U.S. Park Police will lead the operation and include agents from the FBI, DEA, ATF, ICE, and other federal agencies. These officers will operate in clearly marked units and will focus their efforts on high-traffic tourist areas and crime-ridden hotspots that have been neglected under local leadership. While D.C. officials continue to turn a blind eye to the surge in violence, Trump is once again putting public safety first and sending a clear message: lawlessness will not be tolerated.
The move follows President Trump’s announcement that he was actively weighing a federal crackdown on violent crime in Washington, D.C., sparked by a brutal attack on a former staffer from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The assault underscored the growing danger on the streets of the nation’s capital—danger that local officials have failed to control. In response, President Trump is taking swift action to protect innocent Americans and reassert law and order where it’s been abandoned.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt made it clear: violent criminals will find no safe haven in Washington, D.C. under President Trump’s leadership.
"Washington, D.C. is an amazing city, but it has been plagued by violent crime for far too long," Leavitt said. "President Trump has directed an increased presence of federal law enforcement to protect innocent citizens. Starting tonight, there will be no safe harbor for violent criminals in D.C. President Trump is committed to making our Nation’s capital safer for its residents, lawmakers, and visitors from all around the world."
