Throughout the 2016 election cycle Donald Trump has always seemed comforted by his lead in the polls, but a new Reuters/Ipsos survey may put the GOP frontrunner on edge.
While Trump still leads in the national survey, Sen. Ted Cruz is right on his heels. The real estate mogul pulled in 39.5 percent support, while the Texas senator got 35.2 percent—within the poll’s margin of error, which was 4.8 points.
Why is this significant? Well, because Trump has enjoyed a significant lead among his GOP rivals for months.
Other than Cruz, the only candidate to come within 7 points of Trump in this poll was Ben Carson, during his brief spike in popularity in November.Cruz trailed Trump by almost 20 points in last month's edition of the same survey.
Anti-Trump Republicans have been encouraging voters to coalesce around Cruz as the race continues with no candidate locking up the nomination. The Texas senator is pitching himself as the most plausible alternative to Trump.
Tuesday night’s big win in Wisconsin was a "turning point" in the 2016 race, said Cruz, who’s now more confident than ever that he can win the 1,237 delegates needed to secure the GOP nomination.
“Hillary, get ready, here we come," Cruz told supporters during his victory speech in The Badger State.
