By the Way, Yet Another Congressional Aide Was Victimized by Crime in DC

Perhaps this subject feels a tad played out to some people -- but I tend to think our nation's capital city being a crime-infested cesspool is an important and ongoing story.  America's bluest city, and its seat of federal power, has endured terrible levels of crime for years.  DC has had an overall crime problem for decades, of course, but much of the trouble was contained to certain areas of the city.  But over the last few years in particular, we've seen the spillover effect in full force.

A Democratic Congressman was carjacked.  A Democratic Congresswoman was attacked in the elevator of her building.  A senior Republican staffer was stabbed, almost fatally, in an unprovoked, broad daylight assault.  A senior Republican staffer was carjacked.  Major GOP heavyweight and former Trump administration official Mike Gill was murdered during a carjacking.  An Afghan interpreter who escaped the Taliban and brought his family to the US was murdered during a carjacking (that killer got just three years imprisonment). The Washington Post decided its readership could use some handy tips on how to avoid having their cars stolen at gunpoint, including not driving after dark.

The list goes on and on.  And it just got longer:

None of this is to suggest than non-prominent or non-political victims don't matter.  They certainly do, and they vastly outnumber the cases enumerated above.  But when it's clear that DC's political class, including actual members of Congress and their high-ranking aides, are not immune from the crime epidemic, serious interventions are necessary.  Part of the problem is that the District is run by left-wing Democrats, quite a few of whom are lunatics.  These are the people who actually reduced criminal penalties for carjacking, in the middle of a carjacking crisis, until Congress intervened (though the vast majority of House Democrats sided with the pro-crime city council).  Not only should DC never become a state, its so-called 'home rule' should not be an untouchable status quo.  DC's so-called leadership requires adult supervision.  They cannot be trusted to run a safe city.  And because it's our capital city, that's particularly unacceptable.  Another part of the problem is that because juveniles can generally get away with murder under the laws (see the Afghan interpreter example mentioned earlier), guess who gets recruited to commit violent crimes?  Here is just one of countless similar bulletins:

Two teenage boys were arrested Saturday, and two people are being sought for an armed carjacking that occurred in the Navy Yard area Friday, according to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). According to police, the two suspects approached a person exiting their car at 12:08 p.m. in the 1200 block of 4th Street SE. One suspect brandished a handgun and demanded that the victim give them their car keys...Police say the suspects then took the keys and drove away in the victim’s vehicle. On Saturday, officers located the stolen vehicle, arrested two of the suspects, and recovered a firearm. A 15-year-old boy was charged with armed carjacking, and a 14-year-old boy was charged with carrying a pistol without a license and unauthorized use of a vehicle. Police say two suspects are still being sought.

When the Republican House stepped in to quash an insane "criminal justice" in DC during the Biden administration (President Biden let House Democrats twist in the wind and lopsidedly take the wrong side of the issue, before caving and signing the law anyway), left-wing opponents employed slogans like "hands off DC." Sorry, but DC's coddled and impunity-accustomed criminals won't keep their hands off of anyone, so the notion that a failed local government's sovereignty within a special federal district must remain inviolable is ludicrous.  As I said above, give these people adult supervision.  Never, ever give them two United States Senators.  I'll leave you with this bloody update on Mother's Day weekend in our nation's capital city:
