Poll: Only 11% of Likely Voters Trust Government to Spend Tax Dollars Wisely

A recent poll from Rasmussen Reports shows that very few "Likely United States Voters" actually trust the government to spend their tax dollars wisely and that most Americans actually prefer a smaller government with fewer programs than a larger one.

The poll, conducted May 26-27, 2019, shows that "57% of Likely U.S. Voters favor a smaller government with fewer services and lower taxes over a more active one with more services and higher taxes." On the other hand, "32% prefer a bigger, more expensive, more active government."

These numbers have been consistent with Rassmussens findings since 2006. Furthermore, 77% of likely voters do not trust the government to spend their tax dollars in an efficient manner while 11% of likely voters are unsure.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Republicans overwhelmingly reject big government with 75% of respondents favoring smaller government. 64% of unaffiliated voters responded the same way, but just 37% of Democrats favor smaller government.

As noted by Rasmussen, "even among voters who favor a more active government with more services and higher taxes, just 21% approve of the way the government handles taxpayer’s money."

This polling comes as Democrat hopefuls promise large, encompassing federal programs to solve issues like rising healthcare, education, and housing costs which grow the size of government, increase spending, and raise taxes
