The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is suing the Trump administration after it published a series of pro-Trump ads using taxpayer funds.

The ads began in late September and aired on Fox News and the four major broadcast networks. The ads promote President Donald Trump’s immigration and foreign policy and encourage viewers to back Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections.

From NBC News:

The Democratic National Committee sued the Trump administration Wednesday over its taxpayer-funded advertisements that portray President Donald Trump in a favorable light, alleging the ads violate federal laws on government spending and propaganda.

The DNC cited a measure Trump signed into law this year that says funds appropriated by Congress can’t be used “for publicity or propaganda purposes within the United States not heretofore authorized by Congress.”

The lawsuit also cites the Anti-Deficiency Act, which bars spending government money that hasn’t been appropriated by Congress, and the Purpose Statute, which says taxpayer funds can be used only for the specific purposes approved by Congress.

The DNC said the administration’s use of taxpayer dollars for “campaign-style advertisements” deprived Democrats “of a fair electoral process by adding public funds to the resources available to support Republican candidates.” The use of public funds places Democratic candidates at an electoral disadvantage, it argued.

The watchdog group Common Cause filed its own suit making similar legal arguments, alleging the administration had violated appropriations statutes.

The ads, launched last month, sparked criticism from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, many of whom questioned their legality.

Trump reversed course Monday, announcing on Truth Social he would no longer use government funds for the ads and saying he and his PAC, MAGA Inc., would foot the bill moving forward, instead. He didn’t say whether the government would be reimbursed for the ads that already ran.

Each of the ads ends with the line, “Paid for by the U.S. Government,” and reuses campaign-style imagery. One spot, titled “The Final Battle,” is nearly identical to a 2024 Trump campaign ad, according to The New York Times. It shows the president walking through a hallway while he says, “With you at my side, we will demolish the deep state. We will expel the warmongers from our government. We will drive out the globalists; we will cast out the communists, Marxists and fascists.”

Another features Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth touting the military offensive against Iran. One spot shows Trump with Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio and promotes the administration’s effort to remove former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Still another asks viewers to “pretend I’m on the ballot.”
