This month we celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage and those who came to America in search of better lives. They have made this country better. America is a stronger nation thanks to the contributions and successes of Asian Pacific American immigrants.

Republicans want to ensure that America continues to be the land of opportunity for future generations, just as it has been for Asian Pacific American immigrants. We fight for policies that keep our nation free, our people prosperous and the American Dream alive.

The United States shines brightly as a beacon of freedom for the rest of the world. Our nation and our values stand in stark contrast those of the nation that many Asian immigrants fled: Communist China. The good people of China have been oppressed, interned, and even executed by their own government, ruled by the iron fist of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Communist China has placed over a million Uyghur Muslims in internment camps against their will. These political prisoners have experience forced labor, undergone “re-education,” been rapedhad their organs harvested, and in some cases murdered. In the rest of mainland China, the people are suffering under Communist rule, starving, had their speech restricted, and live in fear of their government. Hong Kong has taken to the streets for their independence, but they have been met with the threat of CCP tanks.

It is essential to separate the Chinese Communist Party from the Chinese people, and especially from Chinese Americans. That's because the CCP is our enemy, the Chinese people are oppressed, and Chinese Americans are part of the great fabric of our diverse nation. Republicans stand with the Chinese people and will continue to fight for their freedom and liberties.

We must denounce anti-Asian hate crimes as un-American. Rightful anger and hostility for the Chinese Communist Party must not be directed at Asian Americans or the Chinese people. When we hold China accountable for the COVID-19 pandemic and for their egregious record on human rights, we must remember that it appears likely that the CCP unleashed this plague on the world, not the Chinese people, and certainly not Chinese Americans.

Further, Americans must demand that leadership in the United States be prepared to fiercely defend our values both at home and on the international stage against the CCP. President Joe Biden and Democrats have attacked our liberties at home and turned a blind eye to the atrocities committed by the CCP.

Instead of pledging to help the people of China, Joe Biden told Chinese President Xi Jinping that he wasn’t looking for conflict, but only competition. However, lives are lost with every day that he sits idle and underestimates the Chinese Communist Party. The CCP is among the greatest forces for evil on the face of the earth and must be treated as such. We must hold the Chinese government accountable for its crimes and put an end to the suffering of its people and the genocide of the Uyghurs.

Americans, regardless of party, should stand together against the oppressive, evil regime that is the Chinese Communist Party. This APA heritage month, we in the Republican Party stand with the Chinese people in their struggle for freedom and liberty, and we also stand with Chinese Americans who have found freedom in this country and have made our country better with their presence.

Tommy Hicks is the co-chair of the Republican National Committee.
