In the course of a long speaking career, I have been hired to speak in many intriguing global locations. Some of them are incredibly dangerous. For example, the people who hired me to speak in Sao Paulo (Brazil), Bogota (Colombia), and Nairobi (Kenya) would not allow me to leave my hotel without security. That would never happen in the U.S.
Or would it? Last month, as I visited New York City, four people were murdered a few blocks from my hotel. Did I feel safe walking the streets? Are you kidding?
Thanks in large part to the Democrat Party, our nation has descended into rampant lawlessness. We have watched cities and towns ravaged by criminals. Hundreds of businesses, the result of years of struggle and sacrifice, have been utterly destroyed. Buildings have been looted and burned. Innocent people have been beaten and murdered. You are much more likely to be robbed, beaten, shot, or raped in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Portland, and San Francisco than you were a few years ago.
The American cities that have become dangerous all seem to have one thing in common. They are run by Democrats. Violent crime has become the norm in America as Democrat Party politicians call for the defunding of police departments and policies that favor criminals over law-abiding citizens.
“Lawlessness is an overwhelming fact of American life,” said political activist Ralph Nader. “How many times have we been told that our country is under the rule of law? Yet the country’s legal life is defined instead by major zones of lawlessness created by noncompliance and lack of enforcement.” Spineless Democrat mayors, governors, judges, and district attorneys have encouraged lawless notions of the “disband the police” variety.
With the complicity of Democrat mayors such as Brandon Johnson (Chicago), Karen Bass (Los Angeles), London Breed (San Francisco), Eric Adams (New York) and Muriel Bowser (Washington, D.C.), police are told to stand down and allow the violence to continue. When criminals are arrested, they are released without bail so they can repeat their offenses. Prosecutors like Manhattan D.A. Alvin Bragg refuse to prosecute them. “The people whose job it is to make you feel safe,” said Tucker Carlson, “are instead making it easier for criminals to terrorize your family.”
New York, the greatest city in America and the world, is being destroyed. In a single week, 101 people were shot, nearly four times as many as the comparable period in the previous year. Criminally irresponsible mayors have encouraged shoplifting and looting, ordered violent criminals to be released from Riker’s Island prison, and abandoned the populace to the brutal mercy of hooligans and thugs. It will take 10 years to restore it, which may not happen at all if voters elect Zohran Mamdani—a man who wants to replace police with social workers—as their new mayor.
Most living Americans have never witnessed similar incidents of violence. Now they are common all over the country. What happened? What happened is that the Democrat Party has embraced lawlessness and violence as its modus operandi. It began in earnest with Barack Obama, who gave the green light to anarchy. We haven’t seen the worst of it. “If this country doesn’t give us what we want,” said a Black Lives Matter spokesman, “then we will burn down this system and replace it.” Financial support from leftist billionaires will ensure that recruits are available for more looting and burning and who knows what else.
President Trump is taking unprecedented action to stem the overwhelming crime stats in the District of Columbia. It is long overdue. Yet look at all the criticism he is receiving from Democrats who want the crime spree to continue. We have a right to feel confident that the government is capable of protecting us. Thanks to Democrats, that confidence is slipping away.
