takes on Type 2 diabetes

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- After a year and a half of personal research and writing, Craig Polston has published his work on Type 2 Diabetes. In "You Can Beat Diabetes - A Minister's Journey from Diagnosis to Deliverance," Polston addresses the major causes behind this national epidemic and the steps that can be taken to arrest, even reverse, the effects of the disease in those recently diagnosed.

Polston is pastor of Kingdom Baptist Church in Fredericksburg, Va.

Understanding some of the complications that come with advanced diabetes, Polston speaks of the fear that drove him to personally study the disease. After gaining control of his own condition, he reasoned that, with over 26 million diabetics in this country alone (diagnosed and undiagnosed), and another 79 million people who are pre-diabetic, many are unsure of where to go and what to do next. Polston's desire to help newly diagnosed individuals gave birth to his book.

You Can Beat Diabetes is a story of inspiration and also a survival guide to move people from a mindset of private pain to an attitude of passionate purpose. Beyond the expected advice of pursuing a proper diet and exercise, Polston tackles the topics of insulin resistance, probiotics and nutritional supplements, the effects of stress and depression on diabetes -- and his own personal battle plan for beating the disease.

"Diabetes makes us do what we should have been doing anyway," said Polston, after having been diagnosed in May 2011. Today he is able to live like a person without the disease. The forward for You Can Beat Diabetes was written by Steve Reynolds, author of the widely acclaimed book, "Bod4God," as seen on FOX News, the Today Show and ABC's Nightline. Karl Nadolsky, co-inventor of Glycosolve by Leaner Living, also contributed to the book. Finally, You Can Beat Diabetes currently is being featured on Diabetes Daily, one of the largest diabetes websites in the country with over 91,000 members.

You Can Beat Diabetes is available on Amazon, in paperback and for kindle - and also can be purchased online through Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million and other retailers.

HLGU nursing grads receive 100% pass rate

HANNIBAL, Mo. -- Hannibal-LaGrange University's thirty-five 2012 nursing graduates top the state and national levels with a 100% pass rate on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).

The NCLEX-RN is an exam distributed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing used to ensure and regulate that only competent and licensed nurses are practicing in the healthcare arena.

"I am very excited and proud of both the graduates and the nursing faculty for such an accomplishment," said Anne Riggs, MSN, RN, Director of the Division of Nursing and Allied Health.

"The 100% pass rate that we achieved with the NCLEX-RN has carried over to a general sense of confidence and achievement in our professional roles," said Andrew Schmidt, a 2012 nursing graduate. "The nursing program at HLGU did a superb job of preparing me for my job as a floor nurse on a Med/Surg/Oncology floor."

This comes as exciting news to the nursing department, but this is not a first time achievement for them. The nursing graduates and faculty also received a 100% pass rate in 2007, 2006, and 2005.

"I am extremely pleased with the news that our nursing students had a 100% pass rate on their boards. This is the result of the hard work and dedication of our faculty in the nursing program," said Dr. Anthony Allen, HLGU President. "Congratulations to all!"

With a Missouri state average of a 93% pass rate for first-time exam takers and a national average of 90%, HLGU students easily top the list.

"I love working with the students to help them understand concepts and to see them put it all together," said Nursing Instructor Terri Amos. "A 100% NCLEX-RN pass rate validates that the students are receiving what they need to be successful!"

The nursing faculty are dedicated to the program's mission to achieve excellence in nursing education by maintaining high academic standards in a distinctively Christian environment. The program's curriculum and instructional processes reflect educational theory, interdisciplinary collaboration, research and best practices which prepare graduates to be successful on the NCLEX-RN, and as practitioners.
