VANCOUVER, Wash. (BP) -- The Northwest Baptist Convention's executive director search committee is seeking nominees to lead the regional network of 440-plus churches in Oregon, Washington and north Idaho.

A five-member committee recommended by NWBC President Steve Schenewerk, pastor of Community Baptist Church in Winston, Ore., was formed after NWBC Executive Director Bill Crews announced his intent to retire at the end of 2012 or whenever a new executive director is elected by convention messengers.

Nominations should include a detailed resume and a letter detailing why the candidate is being proposed, according to Clint Ashley, search committee chairman. Ashley is a former Washington pastor and retired director of Golden Gate Seminary's Pacific Northwest campus.

The NWBC, established in 1948, operates with a $5.1 million annual budget. Of that, more than $2.9 million comes through Cooperative Program gifts and offerings from the convention's affiliated churches. Another $1.7 million comes from the North American Mission Board.

The convention employs about two dozen staff members, about half of whom are jointly funded by NAMB.

Crews, addressing the SBC Executive Committee during its Sept. 17-18 meeting in Nashville, added a request for prayer "for the Northwest Baptist Convention and particularly for the search committee as they look for someone to come and lead us in the future."

"It's a wonderful time to be a part of the Northwest Baptist Convention," Crews said, noting that the convention intends to plant more than 50 churches this year, with 25 of them in Seattle alone. It would be the largest number of churches planted in one year in the history of the Northwest convention, Crews said.

"Pray for us. There are 11.5 million people who live in the Northwest. Most of them need Jesus Christ, and that's why we're there," he said.

Nomination letters and resumes for Northwest Baptist Convention executive director may be sent to NWBC Executive Director Search Committee, 3200 NE 109th Ave., Vancouver WA 98682 or by email to execsearch@nwbaptist.org.
