Politicizing Medicine, Medicalizing Politics

I’m not a doctor. I don’t even play one on TV. Nor is Steve Pearlstein a doctor. Pearlstein is the respected business columnist of the Washington Post. His weekly column scorched President Obama’s Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius for her decision to override an impartial expert panel’s advice on mammograms.

Going Rogue by Sarah Palin FREE

He wrote: “Sebelius did a marvelous job...of undermining the move toward evidence-based medicine with her hasty and cowardly disavowal of a recommendation from her department's own task force that women under 50 are probably better off not getting routine annual mammograms.”

How does Steve Pearlstein know which advice is better for women--an HHS panel of medical experts or the Secretary of HHS? He doesn’t and I don’t. One thing is clear, we’re going to get this kind of back-and-forthing every week from now until the day we die unless the government takeover of health care is stopped.

President Obama’s chief adviser on health care is Dr. Ezekiel Emmanuel, brother of White House  Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel. Dr. Emmanuel thinks the problem with burgeoning health care costs is that pesky Hippocratic Oath. Too many doctors are too concerned about their own patients; they’re not looking at the bigger picture. In a world of scarce resources, wouldn’t it be better to take our chances that some women 41-50 will get breast cancer than to devote a disproportionate share of society’s total resources to MRI’s for them. We could treat a lot of diabetics for what it costs to save a few women from breast cancer. Do the math. That’s the Zeke approach.

It’s probably really convenient that Zeke and Rahm are brothers. That way we can apply Chicago-style politics to your health care needs. You won’t have many choices under ObamaCare. But you don’t have many choices for Mayor in Chicago, either. And they like it that way.

One thing not being mentioned in this week’s battle over early detection for breast cancer is the abortion-breast cancer connection. Abortion can increase the likelihood of a woman developing  breast cancer. So can use of the contraceptive pill.

These are not things you are likely to hear in this debate. Why? Because the fight to defend human life has already politicized medical care in this country.

the reason health care is expensive is BECAUSE of government intervention. Full control and rationing will diminish the supply. Any mandated decrease in cost will simply diminish the supply, causing shortages and scarcity. Ken Blackwell may not be a doctor, but I am. You can thank organized medicine and the fascist manner with which they partner with the government to maintain a monopoly on health care, and your state health insurance board partnering in the same way for the state of things today.

It would be interesting to know what breast cancer rates among women were before:

1. The birth control pill
2. Estrogen replacement therapy
3. The decline of breast feeding
4. The delay of childbearing until after 30.
5. The proliferation of induced abortion.

Just curious. Nature's ways have been manipulated by medicine for what reasons? I could be wrong but the pleasure and convenience of women and their partners seem to be the primary motivators.

It is ironic that Rahm/Ezekiel's father fought to create the modern state of Israel, while his sons have fought to destroy the modern state of America.

Something happened between Israel and the US to make these two political thugs turn on America, with Rahm becoming part of the Chicago Political Thuggery machine, and Ezekiel becoming part of the "Death Panel".

Another brother, Ari, is a Hollywood agent. I'm not sure I would want to put that on my job resume' given the crap that has come out of Hollyweird in the past 25 years.

If we are to consider Obama as "The One" or "The Hope", I would like to nominate him for another "One", "The One who destroyed America", aided and abetted by his henchmen, the Emmanuels.

A curse be upon all their heads!

Right on back atcha. Excellent points.

We can never have meaningful reform if the goal is to provide everything to everyone for free.
We can never reduce healthcare costs if deep pockets are the payors.

People like Lilly don't seem to have any idea why that barium costs so much more today than it did once upon a time (before it was "covered").

To utilize all the power of the presidential office and use it to disassemble the strenght and freedoms that America has through it's capitolistic system (the one islam hates), Obama kept all the sleezy lawyers in the black by making sure Tort Reform is not in the Health Care Bill. Now that all the purveyors of Junk Law suits can still chase their dream of the "Rain Maker", due to "No Tort Reform & Obama" all lawyers are letting Obama go on with his racist rage against our country. The Health Care Bill is the vehicle he used to "Extort" help and/or molested cooperation from attorneys. Obama could Health Care Less...ie H1N1 still spreading and vaccines aren't in his conversations he has, about himself.

we know these things are expensive. How, other than for government planned monetary obsolesence by inflation did the things become so incredibly expensive?
As these commodities have a real price can we suppose that the government will just walk in and declare a new price structure and in the light of the reality of markets, (human nature), suppose that it would be proper or functional?
Polititians are also very expensive. Can we imagine Barny or Chucky taking a pay cut or less benefits?

Most people just don't quite get it--and lilly is so far out in left field she might as well be on a different planet (Uranus?)

ALL INSURANCE IS A BET, A GAMBLE. At its simplest, term life insurance, is a bet that you will die BEFORE the term expires--if you do, the insurance company pays out and if you don't they get that money "for free." Other insurances are more complex, but they all work the same way.

If you buy any kind of insurance you are betting it's more likely something befalls you than not--otherwise, why would you give the insurance company premiums for nothing in return? Health insurance is no different.

A test for cancer does not "prevent" cancer, it merely detects the cancer. As a cancer is invariably more treatable the earlier it's detected, early screenings are well worth it--IF you actually GET cancer. If a woman never gets cancer and lives till 90, she will have had 50 years of cancer tests costing tens of thousands of dollars for nothing.

People like lilly think that woman shouldn't have to pay for that 50 years of tests herself--meaning everyone else should pay for it (the effect of insurance as it were). What lilly doesn't get--GOD knows why--is that if ALL women get those same 50 years of tests (men get prostate tests) then everyone incurs similar costs and there is NO ONE LEFT TO SPREAD THE COST AROUND TO.
lilly Wrote: Nov 26, 2009 6:15 PM
The National Cancer Institute does not support the right-wing claim of a connection between abortion and breast cancer.

You want everyone to pay for his own health care? That combo defibrillator-pacemaker that Cheney has now costs $75,000. Recently my husband had a CAT scan that took 45 minutes and cost $9661---$500 of that was for the barium drink. One day on Intensive Care can run to $3000. Few middle-class Americans can afford to pay for their own health care. Fifty years ago my pediatrician made a house call for $7. Now just one blood-draw at the hospital lab can engender $800 worth of tests billed to Blue Cross. What you propose is not realistic.

The recommendations that Sebelius rejected were nothing more then a throw of dice. It was recommended to show President Obama we're with you in cutting cost regardless if there's no research to back it up. Everyone wants to cut cost to help fund President Obama's government health care. Even our troops are going to suffer because the government health care comes first. The safety of the troops and breaking the backs of our enemy comes second or until President Obama comes up with another program that will put our troops further down the line. Name one program that hasn't failed under President Obama. The stimulus failed, the reset button failed, the smart power failed, talking one on one with Ahmadinejad failed, cutting our defense budget failed, scraping our missile defense in Poland failed, Russian agreeing to sanctions against Iran failed, closing Gitmo this year failed, money for clunkers failed, creating jobs failed, recovery for the big three automakers failed, supporting Israel failed, supporting Gen. McChrystal failed, creating a country for all the people failed, maintaining a two party system failed, the elections for Democrats failed, getting support for the government health care failed, President Obama attempt to get the Olympics failed, talks with North Korea failed, Biden's talks to get international troops in Afghanistan failed, Hillary's payoff to the Palestinian Authority to get peace failed, and President Obama's performance as President, a total failure because of his theories that are a complete failure in a country that is not liberal and a world that is not ready to play nice with a weak President.

10. Avoid sugar (and all simple carbs). Remember "Sugar Feeds Cancer".
11. Boost your vitamin D through appropriate supplements if you can't get healthy sun exposure.

Blackwell has an agenda. Secondly, his pair of doctors have an agenda. And Blackwell has no background in science or journalism that would provide a basis for determining the value of any medical claim.

His agenda shows when he mentions Emanuel but does not show any connection between Emanuel and the report about mammograms.

As well his agenda shows when he mentions abortions and legislation intended to reform health insurance rules. Medicaid has for many years paid for abortions if the pregnancy resulted from incest, from rape or if the mother's life was in danger.

Blackwell knows that. He knows as well that the same is proposed; that the current law is not changed in any way.

He knows as well that Federal law now forbids health coverage for illegal aliens. No change is proposed. And if current law provides benefits for legal immigrants, it is reasonable to think that reform will as well.

Since abstinence only education is shown to be a failure in study after study (because do as I say not as I do is not acceptable to young adults)there is plenty of reason to doubt any faith driven doctors known to Blackwell.

If we paid for our own healthcare, would it matter that government is recommending when women should have mammograms? If we paid for our own healthcare needs, they can make such a recommendation, but it will still be left to the woman to decide if they will follow their advice or not, won't they? On the other hand, when we allow government to pay for our healthcare needs, then haven't we also given them the right to make those kinds of recommendations? What is their motivation for making such recommendations? The answer should be pretty obvious, they don't want to spend less money to provide the services they say they want to provide.

The prevention strategies you note have one flaw: they are strategies undertaken by individuals and cost no money. Therefore they are useless to politicians.

"Prevention" to them only matters if it's something to pay for: screening, tests, and now counseling people to tell them to do what you've just said- lose weight, don't smoke, etc.

Most of the "greatest generation" had no health insurance til they reached 65 and got medicare. Up til then, they went to the doctor when they needed to, and they paid him. As a friend of mine said lately, after she went on Medicare: "I never had so many tests in my life--now every time I get a twinge, I get an MRI."
Coincidentally, that's when costs started going out of control. Deep pockets were paying.

There is no evidence that all these preventive tests are increasing lifespan or life quality. They may prevent lawsuits and they certainly line alot of pockets.
Oil changes are preventive maintenance, but your auto insurance doesn't cover it.

To all Veterans and U.S. Servicemen/women, Thank you for your sacrifices from a veteran and patriot.

To all out there, Happy Thanksgiving, and Thank God that I was born in the Greatest Country ever devised by Man, under God.

To all you ingrates out there who celebrate the Tyranny of Liberal Fascism and it's current leader, Barack Obama, You need to take a moment and reflect and Give Thanks to God that you live in the United States of America, where even ingrates and disloyal Americans such as yourself and your Supreme Leader, Obama, have a right to Be Free to Speak and Protest, even when your Speaking and Protests are as Jeremiah Wright says to say "Goddammned America." This sorry excuse of a man and his protege, Obama, only have the freedom to be ungrateful and damnable, because of Good Men and Women Who Have Served and Continue to Serve to Protect and Defend this Nation so that even Deadbeats, Subversives, and Ingrates can live free.

But, for me and mine, I say God Bless America and Thank God that I live in the Greatest Country in the World and Thank The U.S. Military present and past, and thank former Presidents and Congressmen/women who Knew What Their Responsibilities were. And, I pray to God that we survive the Current Tyranny and Treachery being carried out by this President and Liberal Congress. May they all rot in hell which is where they will be once they depart this world due to their Dishonesty and Treachery being carried out for their own Personal Power, Gain, and Evil intentions.

Government run health care will spend money on abortion; but will restrict spending on preventive procedures that detect early warnings of cancer.

Also when government runs health care a scenario that happened in the Indian state of Bihar is very likely. There 40 people died recently because the Doctor's at Public Hospitals went on strike.

If the US Government takes over Healthcare and government Doctors go on strike who is going to prevent them; and have them return to work? We do not have any leader of the calibre of Reagan, who fired all the Air Traffic Controllers when they went on strike.

My mother died from Breast Cancer. The cancer developed when she was in her late 50's, early 60's - there is no history in our family of breast cancer. My mother back in the 1970's took HRP and that is what we believe caused her cancer. She lived to 72 but she was not always cancer free through out her remaining years. Her cancer would keep popping up else where in her body. Cancer is a stalker always looking for the weakest link. My mom out lived some of my friends who were in their 20's when they found out that they had breast cancer. My friends (who were also young moms) who had breast cancer seem to have only 3 years to live after their cancer was found - only one had a history of breast cancer in her family. Anyone can have breast cancer, yes even men.
Utheruff Wrote: Nov 26, 2009 2:51 AM

I have often noted that the idea that some people are not "aware" of breast cancer is ridiculous.

What is appalling, as the author states, is the refusal of establishment medicine to accept the breast-cancer/abortion link.

It is only common sense to realize that if EVERY OTHER VARIABLE in a woman's reproductive life, including age at menarche, age at menopause, number of live births, etc. would impact breast cancer rates, how could induced abortion NOT do so?!?

I suggest people who really care about breast cancer and abortion avoid all the "pink ribbons" and other gimmicks that give money to charities and entities (like Susan G. Komen)that are more committed to pro-abortion policies than to truth.
