The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has announced the lease cancellation for the property initially designated for the Obama Presidential Library. This move comes as part of the Trump administration’s broader initiative to eliminate wasteful spending and combat fraud within the government. The cancellation is included in a newly updated list of nearly 750 federal leases that have been terminated, collectively freeing up more than 9.6 million square feet of space. According to Elon Musk, this decision will save American taxpayers $468 million in lease expenses.

The library is located in Hoffman Estates, run by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), northwest of Chicago. It is separate from the vast 19.3-acre Obama Presidential Center near Jackson Park, which is under construction and expected to be completed in 2026. The Obama Library is a private venture overseen by the Obama Foundation. However, according to DOGE, the library will not be built.

There are currently 35,000 physical artifacts, including gifts presented to the Obamas at Hoffman Estates and 25 million unclassified paper documents. Under the 1978 Presidential Records Act, the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) assumes custody of presidential records and artifacts once a president leaves office.

This is yet another setback in former President Obama’s efforts to preserve his legacy. The Obama Presidential Center has faced multiple lawsuits, rising costs, and construction delays.

Obama advocated for his center to be constructed in the historic area, ultimately securing approval for the project. Groundbreaking occurred in September 2021. However, in 2022, construction was temporarily halted after a noose was discovered on-site. The $830 million campus includes a museum, Obama Foundation offices, a public library, and recreational spaces. The budget for the building significantly exceeded the original $500 million budget.

Musk has worked to close about half the country's government office space, including the Nancy Pelosi federal building in San Francisco.

Elon Musk and DOGE are bringing much-needed accountability to our out-of-control bureaucracy as they take a chainsaw to rampant waste, fraud, and abuse.
