Critics have long argued that the administration's more lenient stance on immigration has contributed to the crisis— and MSNBC's acknowledgment highlights the growing challenges the Biden administration faces in managing border security and addressing the complex dynamics of immigration reform.
During a “Morning Joe” appearance, Former Obama administration official Steve Rattner admitted that President-elect Donald Trump was “not wrong” about the border crisis fueled by the Biden Administration. Rattner highlighted a chart showing the massive number of illegal border crossings during the Biden administration. Rattner said that although the outgoing president finally began doing something about the border crisis in 2024, it was too late to convince voters that his efforts would continue in a second term.
“The border was not Biden’s finest moment, frankly. You can see what happened here, and Trump is not wrong when he talks about how border crossings were quite low,” he said. “They were running about 74,000 a month when he left office. And they, in fact, did shoot up. Some of it was some things Biden said and some ways that they put a moratorium, for example, on deportations.”
In 2024, the Biden administration finally managed to reign in encounters at the Southern border — but the results were too late to convince voters before the election.

Trump blamed Biden's open border policies on the recent New Orleans New Year's Day terrorist attack, in which a man plowed a pickup truck into the crowd, killing at least 15 people.
"With the Biden ‘Open Border’s Policy, ’ I said, many times during Rallies, and elsewhere, that Radical Islamic Terrorism, and other forms of violent crime, will become so bad in America that it will become hard to even imagine or believe,” he wrote on Truth Social. "That time has come, only worse than ever imagined. Joe Biden is the WORST PRESIDENT IN THE HISTORY OF AMERICA, A COMPLETE AND TOTAL DISASTER,” he added. “What he and his group of Election Interfering ‘thugs’ have done to our Country will not soon be forgotten! MAGA.”
