In these dark times, we could use a little humor, especially when a hate crime hoaxer goes to jail. Jussie Smollett, who torched his career in 30 seconds, is heading back to prison for this masterful theater he displayed in creating a fake hate crime.
In January 2019, Smollett claimed he was assaulted by two men wearing red hats who hurled homophobic and racist epithets at him while he was getting a sandwich at Subway around 2 AM. They also poured bleach on him and put a noose around his neck. Most of the outrage came from white progressive circles—the black community knew this guy was lying from the start.
Comedians and even sports commentators brutalized Smollett’s story. When it was revealed that the two attackers were Nigerian brothers that Smollett had hired to “attack” him, Hall of Fame NBA stars Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal couldn’t stop laughing. Smollett also reportedly paid the brothers with a check. It’s a public relations train wreck you cannot make up:
Smollett was convicted on five counts of disorderly conduct and given a 150-day jail sentence. He served six days before he was released pending appeal. That decision was rendered last Friday, where the disgraced actor lost, so back to the slammer he goes (via NY Post):
Disgraced actor Jussie Smollett may be going back to jail soon as an appeals court upheld his convictions related to a 2019 hate crime hoax on Friday.
The “Empire” star, 41, was convicted in 2021 of five felony counts of disorderly conduct related to the alleged racist, homophobic attack and sentenced to 150 days behind bars.
He served just six days of the sentence while the appeal was pending.
Smollett challenged the role of the special prosecutors, the jury selection, evidence, and other aspects of the case against him – but the convictions were ultimately upheld in 2-1 opinion from the Illinois Appeal Court.

Smollett’s team vowed to keep fighting the court’s decision.
“We wish to highlight that the decision was divided, with Justice Lyle offering a detailed analysis in favor of Smollett,” a rep for the actor told TMZ.
“We are preparing to escalate this matter to the Supreme Court, armed with a substantial body of evidence.”
In some ways, this is pure cinema…in watching a man ruin his life.
