Andy Roth from Club for Growth and I were talking this morning about all the newspapers we could think of with conservative editorial pages.
Here's his initial list, which prompted the conversation:
The Wall Street Journal,The Washington Times, The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, The Orange County Register, The Union Leader, The New York Post, The San Diego Union-Tribune
Some that aren’t as solid, but deserve merit:The Arizona Republic
The Rocky Mountain News
The Chicago Tribune
We brainstormed to see if we could find a few more. I suggested the Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle, which is fairly consistently conservative and recognized in the state as the counterpoint to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution since the AJC its conservative editorial page a couple years ago with the retiring of its afternoon edition.
We also looked at the larger papers of the Freedom Communications group, which owns the solidly conservative Orange County Register, but I can't say I've followed the East Valley (Ariz.) Tribune or the Colorado Springs Gazette.
The Gazette today comes out against parents suing Nickelodeon and Kellogg's over childhood obesity, which seems like a good sign:
And Americans are no strangers to activist groups such as CPSI attempting to use government to force us to do what’s good for us. But what lawsuits like this one seem to ignore is that no one puts a gun to our heads and forces us to buy their products or eat their foods. Children will always ask for what they see on commercials; parents are free to tell them no.
The Charleston (S.C.) Post and Courier also had a promising editorial in favor of school choice, but I've never heard of that paper being particularly conservative on its editorial page.
Andy and I were stumped after that. We live here; we don't know the consistent character of many of these newspapers, and there are undoubtedly many more, smaller papers with conservative editorial pages we've never heard of.
So, what do we do? We do what bloggers always do when they want diffuse, obscure, hard-to-find information. We ask our readers to do it for us!
Andy is now compiling a list of conservative editorial pages by state. We'd just love to have a bigger list on hand, and I'd love to identify smaller newspapers with quality pages that might not get read outside of their communities unless they're trumpeted in the blogosphere.

I spend a lot of time picking on ridiculous, lefty editorial pages. Conservative editorial pages deserve some recognition for swimming up the liberal ink stream to bring us some variety. Oh, and Andy's readers got a head-start, so shoot me some ideas. (Not that it's a competition. Oh, no. Totally not. Wouldn't think of it.)
UPDATE (5:40 p.m.): I got the Jacksonville (Fla.) Times-Union in my inbox about four times, so Andy has added it to the list. The Times-Union is owned by the same company as the Augusta Chronicle, which I mentioned earlier. Morris Communications is owned by a Georgian named Morris who, if I remember correctly, declared all-out war on Martha Burk on his editorial pages when she tried to mess up the Masters.
Andy sends more supporting evidence for the Times-Union's bona fides.
UPDATE (5:50 p.m.): Reader Bradley in Colorado wonders how I haven't ever noticed the Daily Oklahoman. Now that I check out the list of editorials there, I'm wondering that myself.
The Daily Oklahoman on what Bush should say about tax policy Tuesday:
Tax relief helped spare the country from a deep recession and fueled the current boom. The estate tax repeal should be made permanent, as well as other Bush tax cuts on capital gains and dividends to help spur more investment and saving.
And, if that weren't enough, the Oklahoman didn't hesitate to call out Hamas for terrorism this week.
