On the 2024 campaign trail, President Donald Trump promised to carry out mass deportations beginning on his first day in office.

Trump has kept his promise, and has opened new detention facilities like Alligator Alcatraz to process illegal aliens. This week, Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, said he supported a newer initiative to put ankle monitors on illegal aliens, as well.

A new poll asked Americans how they feel about the Trump administration’s illegal immigration crackdown.

The poll found that the majority of Americans remain supportive.

The Wall Street Journal poll found just over half of voters approve of Trump’s handling of illegal immigration, a centerpiece of his agenda, and that 62 percent of respondents favor deporting people who came to the country illegally (via WSJ):

A slim majority of Americans said the Trump administration is crossing the line by deporting people without proof that they are in the U.S. illegally, ignoring courts that have told them to stop, and denying people a hearing. Nearly 60% of independents said the administration has gone too far in this regard.

Republican voters, however, remain solidly supportive of Trump’s deportation program, which was one of the central promises of his presidential campaign. Some 90% of Republicans in the Journal survey approve of how he is handling immigration and illegal immigration. A mere 11% in the GOP say Trump’s deportation efforts have gone too far or have crossed a line, compared with about 90% of Democrats.

“I believe that immigration is a privilege and a right and that there are venues for that to happen,” Shannon Snyder, 52, a former Democrat-turned-libertarian in California, told WSJ. Snyder voted for Trump for the first time in November.

“I support him escorting them out…If people came here illegally, they shouldn’t be here,” she added.
