Arizona’s Supreme Court Upheld Legislation to Protect Unborn Life. Here’s How Gavin Newsom Responded.

Earlier this month, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that the state can enforce a law from 1864 that forbids abortion except to save the mother’s life, which Townhall covered. The 4-2 decision supersedes a previous ruling that limited abortion in the state to 15 weeks.

Predictably, pro-abortion Democrats like Gov. Katie Hobbs flipped out over the ruling, claiming that women deserve a right to end the lives of their unborn children. The Biden administration responded by launching a seven-figure ad buy in Arizona focusing on abortion. And, Vice President Kamala Harris visited the state to issue remarks promoting abortion.

On Sunday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that he would introduce legislation to help Arizonans get out-of-state abortions. He made the remarks on MSNBC’s “Inside with Jen Psaki.”

“We need to start focusing on making the kind of progress that’s needed,” Newsom said, adding, “right now, a big part of my focus, why I’m so focused on Arizona, and providing doctors from Arizona the ability to come into California through emergency legislation we’ll introduce with our Women’s Caucus this week is to address the crisis at hand with that law that will go into effect on May 1 to provide [abortion] access to women and girls who are fleeing the state of Arizona.”

The California governor added that the state legislature will focus on Arizona and Nevada electorally and how they will play a role in this year’s election.

“No state has more responsibility, more opportunity, but bigger burden than the state of California,” Newsom said.

Newsom added that the “emergency legislation” was inspired by Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake, who came out against the Arizona Supreme Court’s ruling, which Townhall covered.

“I don’t take much of what she says at face value…she basically said last week that people, well, don’t worry about 1864 bans in Arizona. You can all go to California. You can all go to a neighboring state. We took that quite literally and quite seriously,” he said.

In the interview, Newsom claimed that President Joe Biden has one of the strongest economies and overall record “of any president in our lifetime.”

“It’s not getting the attention because of the propaganda being spewed on those other networks,” Newsom said. “They want to deny access not just to reproductive care, but the future of women and girls. Their life, their self-determination. I mean, this is profound. How can women support Donald Trump for election this November?”
