Texas Democrats are losing their minds over a poll that shows that they’re within inches of winning the gubernatorial race, but isn’t this the same song and dance we’ve seen repeatedly for the last decade?

Gina Hinojosa, the lady with an almost nonexistent profile, thinks that she’s going to be the one to finally crack the Democrat losing streak. National commentators apparently believe this at all, calling her and radical James Talarico’s candidacies “a perfect storm.” That would be significantly more baffling if you ignored the fact that Xochitl is Gina’s sister, but alas.

If you recall from years ago, Beto claimed that he was “pretty much tied” with Governor Greg Abbott when the two faced off against one another in 2022. Beto had just gained household name recognition from his Senate and presidential campaigns in the four years preceding his race against Abbott. And who is still in power and whose name haven’t you heard in about four years?
Democrats have sold the “Purple Texas” myth for as long as I can remember. They have failed at every turn to win a statewide race. Their last victory came before I was even alive and before the invention of the DVD or the first camera phone.
Still, consultants are able to sell candidates and donors on the dream of winning a race every cycle. Millions get flushed down the toilet trying to make it happen. The consultants, with their pockets lined with thousands of wasted dollars and with some flashy campaign experience under their belt, come away fairly happy despite the loss.
The odd phenomenon can only be described as some twisted Stockholm Syndrome that these people have over the Democrat Party. It also brings to mind an insightful quote from the late great Norm Macdonald: “As long as the red dice are in the air, the gambler has hope. And hope is a wonderful thing to be addicted to.”
Some day, perhaps one of these Democrats will sneak through and make electoral history. It’s hard to imagine that it’ll happen during this cycle and with this slate of candidates. But a liberal can dream, I guess.
