Bureaucrat Shuts Down Children's Lemonade Stand Update: The Lemonade Stand Stays, Fine Waived

A county inspector shut down a lemonade stand in Bethesda, Maryland, because the children operating it had not acquired a vendor's license. The families were also fined $500 for ignoring warnings to shut it down.

The stand was set up outside of the US Open, for the purpose of raising money for a cancer charity.

The director of permitting in Montgomery County was quoted saying that lemonade stands are technically illegal in the United States, but that the laws usually aren't enforced. She also explained that this particular stand was larger and operating too close to the US Open.

Update: Montgomery County will allow the kids to serve lemonade after all. The parents are annoyed, but glad the situation has been resolved. All's well that ends well.
