After Andrea Leadsom dropped out of the Conservative Party leadership election, Theresa May was the last woman left standing and became the leader of the party by default. Seeing this, current Prime Minister David Cameron will resign effective on Wednesday so that May can assume her new role.

Cameron announced his resignation following the Brexit vote. Cameron had been a major figure in the "remain" campaign.
May is the second woman to lead the United Kingdom.
