Texas Protects Right To Life With 'Born Alive Act,' While House Dems Reject Federal Version More Than 70 Times

Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott announced via Twitter Thursday that he has signed yet another key piece of legislation which promotes the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Gov. Abbott signed the Born Alive Act, which guarantees that a baby born during a botched abortion is given necessary and reasonable treatment, as any other patient would receive, in order to be kept alive. Republicans in Congress have attempted to bring up a similar version of the bill for a House vote, but have been denied more than 70 times by their Democratic counterparts from doing so.

"In some states, leaders support abortion until the last minute of pregnancy — even after a child is born," Gov. Abbott tweeted. "Not in Texas. I formally signed the Born Alive Act to make it illegal to kill a child who survives an abortion. It also ensures the baby receives needed medical care."

This week, in a statement sent out from GOP House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Republicans admonished Democrats for the 72nd, 73rd, and the 74th time for blocking mandatory medical care for children born alive. "Reps. Jim Banks (IN-03), John Shimkus (IL-15), and Richard Hudson (NC-08) asked for unanimous consent for the House to consider the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act," the office noted. These efforts were denied consideration by their Democratic counterparts.

In May, Leader McCarthy stated that "he never thought [he'd] see this Congress move so far left to the point that making sure proper medical care is provided to babies who survive abortions is a conversation barred from being had on this House floor."
