Trump Weighs in on Gitmo vs. Death Penalty for NYC Terror Suspect

President Trump followed up on comments he made Wednesday that he would like to see the New York City terror suspect get sent to the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, saying that option is likely out of the question.

“Would love to send the NYC terrorist to Guantanamo but statistically that process takes much longer than going through the Federal system,” he said.

“There is also something appropriate about keeping him in the home of the horrible crime he committed. Should move fast. DEATH PENALTY!” the president added.

Trump had responded to a reporter’s question Wednesday about Guantanamo Bay, saying he would “certainly consider” sending 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov there.

Saipov, a Uzbek national, is accused of killing eight people and injuring 11 others when he rammed a rented Home Depot truck through a bike lane in Lower Manhattan Tuesday.

The terror suspect came to the United States in 2010 through what’s known as the Diversity Lottery Program, which the president has vowed to end.

How long he’s been radicalized is unclear, but he was known to federal authorities before the attack as part of a “broader terrorism investigation.”

He yelled ‘Allahu Akbar’ during the attack and left a note pledging his loyalty to the Islamic State. Saipov was completely unremorseful, even wanting to hang an ISIS flag in his hospital room.
