For the past three years, my eldest son has worked part-time for a friend's construction business. He's poured concrete, built decks, painted walls, dug holes, and even constructed a new house from the ground up. It's rewarding, but hard work that leaves him with wicked tan lines in the summer and has helped build his muscles while instilling in him a set of skills that will serve him personally, if not professionally, down the road.

But in order to do the work, the business requires a lot of heavy equipment and large vehicles to do things like haul flooring, concrete pavers, drywall, and gallons of paint. Yet if the environmentalist crowd has its way, my son won't be riding in his boss' work van; they'll force them to use something called "cargo bicycles" or other stupid, ineffective, and eco-friendly nonsense.

"There needs to be incentivizing ways of making people move away from the white van," this woman said. "In London itself, having a white van isn't actually economical. It doesn't make sense. You can't get around the city that much anyway in a white van."

"If you have another option like cargo bikes, and using those different options to get around the city," she continued, "that's the way forward. And you can do that on a cargo bike."

"I've done the investigation. I know that you can do this. This is a way forward," she added.

I'd like to see her try, because she's so full of it I can smell her across the pond. She even admits she hasn't run a business, so why is her opinion carrying any weight at all?

So I spoke to my son, just to get a rough idea of what he hauls for work. Luxury vinyl plank flooring is roughly 48" long by 8" wide. Other types of lumber can be 2" thick by 12" wide and several feet long.

"It's impossible to use a 'cargo bike,'" he said, "especially with all the wood you'd have to use in rough carpentry. Plus all the tools you'd have to use: chop saws, table saws. Those are heavy."

"How do you carry a ladder on a bike?" the host asked.

"A cargo bike!" she insists. What is a cargo bike?

"There's enough ways to carry all sorts of things on a cargo bike. You can carry fridges, you can carry enormous amounts," she insisted. "Construction sites have done the same thing!"

I am begging you: stop listening to stupid people. Stop elevating privileged, spoiled, and out of touch lunatics like this because they happened to do a study on some topic they have no understanding about, much less experience in.

This woman is immune, by and large, to the consequences of the policies she professes. She doesn't own a construction business. She probably works from her cushy home office. An office built by people with real jobs, by the way, who couldn't have built her home by using "cargo bikes." The problem here is this: she sneers at the working class man. She doesn't care if her policies make it impossible for them to do their jobs, because she doesn't respect the work they do. She couldn't survive without it, of course, but that doesn't matter to her.

So it is with all environmentalists. They hate people, except for a handful of elites they deem worthy of the rights, freedoms and luxuries they'd deny the rest of us. We are objects of their contempt, and they take a perverse joy in making our lives not only lowering our standard of living but making our lives harder in the process.
