Standing on principle no longer takes precedence—winning is what counts. In today’s politics, when you can push the boundaries and increase power, you do it. Republicans still fail to understand this. Their reluctance to redraw congressional districts in Ohio and Indiana will hurt us ultimately because Democrats understand power politics. Even with a less-than-competent Joe Biden, look how their Justice Department operated. ‘We stood on principle’ is a loser mentality, and it must stop.

Indiana Senate Republicans strongly opposed a new map designed to increase GOP representation for the midterms and future elections. Their main concern was the openness to gerrymandering, a practice that has been happening legally for decades. Did they believe they could lessen tensions? Their efforts failed completely. Meanwhile, with Democrats holding full control in Virginia, a map showing a 10-1 Democratic advantage is currently being developed.

This ‘principles’ excuse has been used to justify half-measures, coddle progressive Republicans, and avoid the policy battles needed against an increasingly left-wing, unhinged, and illiberal Democratic Party.

I’m tired of it. At this point, what good are principles if losing means less freedom, more taxes, gun confiscation, and a brutal assault on free speech, as we’re seeing in Virginia? The Democrats’ agenda in the Old Dominion is the importation of California politics, but we stood on principle.

Any Republican who thinks we win brownie points by behaving this way isn’t worth our time. Apparently, we still have many in the rank and file.
