Bible Passage: Deuteronomy 31:1 - 34:12
Discussion Question: What are some of the effects you've experienced from spending consistent time in prayer and personal worship?
Food for Thought:
Josh Turner didn't pray to be a successful country singer; it just turned out that way. He didn't set out to be rich or famous. For him, singing is about changing people; it's about touching their hearts in a positive way. And that's exactly what he tries to do. When Turner moved to Nashville in 1998 to pursue a career in country music, he confesses he didn't really know what he was doing. He started with an inspiration from God to write a song about temptation, but he never thought anyone would want to hear it. He was wrong. He performed it for numerous groups of people and eventually cut a demo that found its way to MCA Records. "Long, Black Train" was the first song that Josh played at the Grand Ole Opry. He received two standing ovations and an encore. The song became the title track of his first album; it was his first hit single; and it helped him sell a million copies of that first record.
Turner says that his relationship with God has always been one in which he simply talks with Him. "It's just a continuous ongoing conversation that I have with the Lord, and I feel like that's brought me closer to Him. Ultimately, I get my joy from Him and always put Him first." Josh's consistent prayer time yields him a close relationship with God. He says it's helped him think more clearly and given him wisdom about himself and his life. His successful career in music? That's just a bonus.
