BCNM messengers, at the annual meeting in Farmington, resolved to "strongly urge the Southern Baptist Convention and LifeWay Christian Resources to insure that Glorieta continues its vital ministry to the people known as Southern Baptists now and well into the future or until Jesus returns."
The resolution was New Mexico Baptists' response to a decision in September by LifeWay trustees to begin offering only summer events for students and to pursue "viable options for the disposition of the property. ..."
During the BCNM Executive Board meeting in Albuquerque on Jan. 16, members approved a motion to "authorize the creation of an ad hoc committee whose members will be appointed by the chairman of the executive board. The ad hoc committee will explore the future and possibilities of Glorieta and present their findings to the executive board, in regular or special session, as soon as practical."
The motion was made by Howell Scott, pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Alamogordo, after 70 minutes of discussion in an executive (closed) session.
Appointed to the committee by Executive Board chairman Lamar Morin, pastor of First Baptist Church in Bloomfield, are BCNM Executive Director Joseph Bunce; BCNM President R. Maurice Hollingsworth, pastor of First Baptist Church in Las Cruces; BCNM business administrator Gerald Farley; and BCNM attorney Steve Long. A layman is yet to be named and Morin also will serve on the committee.
Following approval of the motion, board member Rusty Shaffer, a member of Del Norte Baptist Church in Albuquerque, noted that owners of cabins that are located on land they are leasing at the Glorieta conference center from LifeWay are concerned about their future.
