Oakland's Homeless Population Soars Nearly 50 Percent

It seems when Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf is not subverting federal law and warning illegal aliens of pending immigration raids, the progressive mayor is failing to quell the growing problem of homelessness in the city.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that "Oakland’s homeless population rose 47% between 2017 and 2019, one of the biggest two-year increases of any California city, according to a one-night street count released Monday by county officials."

Mayor Schaaf is unaware of how this problem happened despite the city spending thousands of dollars on the problem.  On July 3 Mayor Schaaf touted the "effective service" as a benefit to the community.

"Of course, it is disappointing...that we’ve had the highest increase, at least in the Bay Area," Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf told the paper following the new reports. "It shows that we need to do more; we need to do things differently and we need to act with a sense of urgency that is greater than anything we’ve seen in the past."

"Oakland’s homelessness rate is now 940 per 100,000 population, slightly higher than San Francisco, at 906, and Berkeley, at 898," the story continues. There are currently 4,071 homeless people in the city.

In 2018, Mayor Schaaf leaked to a community illegal aliens that Immigration and Customs Enforcement would begin deportations in the city. ICE was then unable to conduct the raids which allowed the law breakers to run free. This earned the scorn of President Donald J. Trump. She renewed this fight in June of this year after the president announced similar raids would be conducted nationwide.
