Obama Meets With Mexican President Calderon

President Obama started off a press conference with Mexican President Felipe Calderon at the White House today by thanking him for hosting the climate change conference in Cancun, Mexico.

Now onto the real issues.

President Obama:

"Our people have a right to be safe in their communities."

"I remain deeply committed to comprehensive immigration reform."

"We are a nation of both laws and immigrants."

Obama stood side by side with Calderon in their stance against SB 1070 as he stood by him today. Remember Calderon's famous rant on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, saying the bill was discriminatory.

It is no surprise Calderon is an advocate for illegal immigration considering illegal immigrants working in the United States send billions of dollars back to Mexico each year. It is also important to note that although Calderon strongly disagrees with SB 1070 in Arizona, Mexico has extreme immigration laws. Crossing the border illegally into Mexico can land you in jail for 12 years.

USAToday:
Mexico has a law that is no different from Arizona's that empowers local police to check the immigration documents of people suspected of not being in the country legally.
Mexican authorities have harshly criticized Arizona's SB1070, a law that requires local police to check the status of persons suspected of being illegal immigrants. The law provides that a check be done in connection with another law enforcement event, such as a traffic stop, and also permits Arizona citizens to file lawsuits against local authorities for not fully enforcing immigration laws.
On another note, Obama and Calderon were focused on stopping the flow of illegal guns across the border, yet they didn't seem concerned about stopping the illegal human traffic crossing the border by the hundreds each day. Calderon has called on the U.S. government to re-instate the assault weapons ban in the

past,
another position he shares with U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and President Obama share.

Obama:
"I believe in the 2nd amendment, it does provide for Americans the right to bear arms for their protection, for hunting, for a wide range of uses"

"We think we can shape regulation that stops the flow of guns into Mexico while upholding Second Amendment rights.

Regarding the issue of U.S. ICE agents operating in Mexico unarmed, resulting in the death of ICE Agent Jaime Zapata, Calderon said the Mexican Government was working on options, but didn't seem like he is interested in allowing the U.S. to arm federal agents aiding Mexico in the war against drug cartels, saying the drug runners who killed Zapata "didn't know they were attacking U.S. agents."

Calderon:
"We are deeply analyzing alternative to this."

The Mexican government prohibits regular citizens to bear arms. No wonder drug cartels are killing people at a rate of 37 people per day: They can't defend themselves.
