Stephen Colbert Testifying Before Congress--In Character
I thought this Congress had officially jumped the shark when Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) asked Elena Kagan about the 'Twilight' vampire movie series during her Supreme Court confirmation hearing.  Today, they've managed to hit a new low: Comedian

Stephen Colbert is testifying before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration.  He's doing so while maintaining his Comedy Central persona--an ignorant right-wing blowhard commentator.  I happen to find Colbert very clever and quite funny, but this is an absolute farce.  It does not surprise me that Colbert would dream up a silly self-promotional stunt like this.  Indeed, the premise is actually pretty amusing in theory.  What's literally incredible to me is that Democrats agreed to play along.

The hearing us now underway on C-SPAN 3.  Subcommittee chairwoman Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) began her open remarks by admonishing the gallery to respect the "order and decorum," of the proceedings, and directed lookers-on to refrain from any "manifestation of approval or disapproval."

If Lofgren and her fellow committee members were truly interested in guarding the "order and decorum" of their precious proceedings, they'd never have invited a comedian to make a mockery of them in the first place.

Millions of Americans are unemployed.  We are at war in two countries.  Our entitlement crisis is accelerating.  Large portions of our southern border are insecure war zones.  And yet the Democrat-controlled Congress finds it appropriate to humor a television character by officially permitting him use the people's House as his own personal playhouse before a national TV audience.

Perhaps I sound like a curmudgeonly killjoy, but this is disgraceful, and it's an embarrassment.  I hope the Democrats have a good chuckle while they can this morning, because many of them should, and will, be thrown out on their ear in November.

Stray thought--Remember when Colbert's Comedy Central cohort, Jon Stewart, hectored CNN's 'Crossfire' about "hurting America"?  His infamous sanctimony-laden lecture was ostensibly about how talking head-style pundit shows were destroying our national political dialogue:

Stewart to Tucker Carlson: "You have a responsibility to the public discourse, and you fail miserably."  Standing by for Stewart's blistering monologue tonight...
