Independent candidate and former Governor Angus King is the projected winner of Maine’s Senate race, the Associated Press projects.
The left-leaning independent held a solid lead throughout the campaign over Republican challenger Charlie Summers and Democratic candidate Cynthia Dill.
King won despite criticism
for accepting large donations from billionaires such as New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
He will replace former Republican candidate Olympia Snowe, who decided to retire after 18 years in the Senate because of partisan gridlock.
