Justin Trudeau and Liberals Poised to Win Canadian Election

Polls have closed in the Canadian general election and it appears that Steven Harper's 10-year reign as Prime Minister has come to a close. Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party of Canada have won a majority of seats and will form a majority government.

The eleven-week campaign was one of the longest in modern Canadian history. Parliament was dissolved on August 2. This election appeared to be a close race between Trudeau's Liberals, Harper's Conservatives, and the New Democratic Party, headed by Thomas Mulcair.

As of now (11 p.m. EST), the Liberal Party appears to have run away with the election and the CBC has projected a majority government.

HBO's John Oliver made the case for Trudeau last night on his show Last Week Tonight, possibly breaking Canadian law in the process. (Elections Canada, however, said he was fine.)

Trudeau's father, Pierre Trudeau, served as Prime Minister of Canada from April 1968-June 1979 and again from March 1980 to June 1984.
