Is it Time to Defund the UN?

In light of its recent resolution, it’s clear that the UN has positioned itself as a relentless enemy of Israel with the support of the soon departing Obama administration.

Why is the UN so consistently anti-Israel? One of the reasons is that the UN General Assembly gives one vote per member country, and there is one Jewish state and many more Islamic countries.

In 1969, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), consisting of 57 Muslim member states, established itself as "the collective voice of the Muslim world." Fifty-six of those states are members of the UN.

Rep. Steve Rothman stated, "The United Nations has presented itself to the world as a bastion for equality, except when it comes to the State of Israel." Rothman noted Israel is the only member state at the UN that has been denied a seat on the Security Council which offers seats on a rotating basis to individual member states representing their respective regional groups. Israel has been refused a seat within its own geographic regional group, the Asian States, which contains Arab member states that consider the Jewish state to exist on "occupied territory."

In the period from 1967-1989 alone, the UN Security Council expressed its 'concern,' 'grave concern,' 'deep regrets.' 'shock' etc. regarding Israel's actions 28 times. The Council never expressed negative sentiments regarding either any Arab state or the PLO. The Security Council 'condemned,' 'censured,' 'deplored' Israel 43 times. No Arab state or group was ever condemned.

David Littman, in the Middle East Quarterly, states, “In recent years, representatives of some Muslim states have demanded, and often received, special treatment at the United Nations mostly via the Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR). As a result, non-diplomatic terms such as ‘blasphemy’ and ‘defamation of Islam’ have seeped into the United Nations system, leading to a situation in which non-Muslim governments accept certain rules of conduct in conformity with Islamic law (the Shari`a) and acquiesce to a self-imposed silence regarding topics touching on Islam.” This clearly contradicts "the right to freedom of opinion and expression" promised by the UN’s Article XIX of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Unless Trump and Congress act to defund the UN, the United States will be limited to vetoing actions from an ineffectual organization controlled increasingly by a Muslim-dominated world body bent on expanding the number of Muslim controlled countries in the world.

But there is an even better reason to encourage Trump and Congress to end U.S. support of this organization. The failure of the UN to stand for the independence of Biafra from Nigeria as strongly as they have for the Palestinians, who have much less right for their land, is proof enough that the UN should be defunded.

The country of Nigeria was created as a colony by Great Britain in 1914, merging different indigenous African peoples, among them the Biafrans, who are ethnically predominantly Igbo and religiously are mostly Christian. In 1960, Biafra seceded from Nigeria, and in 1967 declared its own state. The Nigerian government refused to accept the secession and launched a war and blockade on Biafra. That civil war resulted in the murder of more than two million Biafrans. Biafra, a state in what is today southeastern Nigeria, lost their war and their independent state.

A new generation of Biafrans has been peacefully advocating for an independent Biafra. Muhammadu Buhari, the Muslim president of Nigeria, has aggressively fought this independence movement. Since October 2015, Nigeria has detained Nnamdi Kanu, the leader for Biafran independence and director of Radio Biafra, despite meeting bail conditions. What’s worse is that the genocide of Biafrans continues every day.

In spite of the UN’s inaction, the restoration of the nation of Biafra has been supported by the respected human rights organization, Amnesty International, exposing the Buhari government and the rampant Nigerian extra-judicial killing and brute force to suppress peaceful and unarmed Biafrans who are exercising their rights to self-determination. Many members of European Parliaments (MEP’s) have also added their voices to the global outrage on Buhari and his murderous Fulani militias.

Where is the UN? While passing resolutions condemning Israel, they are doing nothing to stop Nigeria from its ongoing atrocities.

Trump’s support is raising hopes for a new direction. Femi Fani-Kayode, writing in the Sun, observed: “With Trump in the White House, guided, protected, led, fortified, and driven by the love, power, mercy and grace of the Living God that put him there, the world will be a better and safer place after his swearing in on January 20, 2017. … After that day, the oppressed people of the southern and Middle Belt zones of Nigeria will have a friend in the White House. And as time goes by, they will be given the opportunity to tell their story to the world, to break their chains of servitude, to shatter their yoke of slavery and to free themselves from the hideous mental prison of fear, tyranny and bondage that they have been subjected to over the last 56 years by their internal colonial masters. … Today, … I dare to proclaim, just like the great American freedom fighter Patrick Henry once dared to proclaim in his famous speech 291 years ago whilst calling for armed resistance against the British: ‘GIVE ME LIBERTY OR GIVE ME DEATH!’”

May it be so. President-elect Trump has made his support of Israel clear. May he soon join other freedom-loving countries to take a stand against Muslim genocide and the call for self-determination for Biafra. If the UN, which consistently preaches the gospel of human rights and self-determination, ceases to be a fair arbitrator in dealing with the national aspirations for Biafra, let us end our support and create a United Freedom Alliance limited to democratic-loving countries committed to the rule of law, free enterprise, and liberty.
