Ted, do you have kids, and are they volunteering somewhere now? And what about theasching them the value of hard work, earning money, and then managing what they earn? Why give all these jobs to people who don't live in this country and most likely never will. Why not give the kids who grew up here, and are the future of this country the jobs? I agree with almost everything you say. Volunteering and earning money are not incompatible, so kids can do both - so can all of us.

As for the legal and illegal immigrants, the simple answer you can thank God if your kids don't have to start at the bottom like illegal immigrants or thank God if your kids can compete for the good jobs with the legal immigrants. If you aren't lucky or fate has been unkind, your kids will have to work very hard and against the odds.

Why should my kids have to rely on luck, Ted? Why shouldn't they have the first shot at the opportunities this country offers? America can't solve all the problems of every disadvantaged person in the world at the expense of it's own citizens. Your arguement is flat, and quite frankly just more prog propaganda, and another example of how the left is trying to destroy America from the inside out. if you wish to live in a socialist utopia you have many options around the globe. Ted seems to believe that we should all serve the gov't, and that we should rely on gov't for our livlihood. I believe the gov't should serve the people and protect our opportunities so that we have the best chance to acheive the ever disappearing "American Dream".

If he is a civil engineer, you should be telling your Congressmen to vote for more federal infrastructure programs to repair our transport, sewage, drinking water, levees and other deteriorating public systems.

Civil engineers are finding these are tough times because of restrictions on federal and state funds going to repair our deteriorating public infrastructure.

Mechanical engineers also work in other areas that have been funded primarily by the state and federal government; yet these programs are universally decried by conservatives.

Building the next generation of America is going to take sacrifices from all of us; including higher taxes.

Rather than go into the Navy, wouldn't it have been better if he could get a no interest loan from the government so he could study more and pass the Civil Engineering exam? The FE exam is at the beginning level of the mechanical engineering profession.

Soooooo, we should destroy the economy even more. Stop any use of fossil fuels in the US. Weather will suddenly be non-existent. It will be Camelot ( not the current cable version, the Broadway version). We have this wonderful green grid that will take over immediately. The electric trucks and trains will deliver the efficient solar panels to their sun farms. Let's start by leveling Ted's house. News flash, Ted, all the solar panels and wind turbines will be built in China in coal powered factories. Irony, Ted, irony.

Richard makes some strong arguments for doing finding something better than merely buying solar panels and wind turbines.

My argument is we need basic research and we missed the boat in building solar panels and wind turbines in Mexico or some other lower wage country friendly to American corporations.

My further argument is that there is plenty of cheap oil and natural gas, so we don't have to waste our money with developing expensive American sources of these resources. It's a cost equation.

In conclusion, we need two things: (1) basic research investment and (2) a more efficient transportation system that is less dependent on fossil fuels.

Actually, we need more than the two things I listed. Here are another two policies that I advocate:

(3) Continued federal investment in conservation, such as home insulation and more efficient appliances.

(4) Investment in and improvement of public education including the public universities of this country.

The Bakken reserve in ND,SD and Montanna is booming. Unemployment is 3% in ND.
Property values are rising and convinece store clerks are making 15 to 18 a hour.

I don't think anyone there believe's American sources are to "expensive" to harvest.

Job prospects are not good in this country. They are good in Germany Sweden or Norway and Switzerland - countries with a strong federal government and stronger government social services.

We continue to hire from abroad experts in the physical sciences, engineering, and programming.

Americans still haven't seized on the opportunities in these technical fields because they have been too comfortable and affluent in their blue-collar and clerical-level jobs for too long.

In other words, the burning desire and discipline needed to graduate in a technical field is absent from too many young people in this country.
