*If Free-Market Capitalism works, then America would be rising or at least swimming, not sinking into debt servitude to Communist China.

*If Free-Market Capitalism works-then why did Republicans and Democrats under Bush have to bail out the Wall Street Thieves by taking $700 Billion from the U.S. Treasury to pay hundreds of millions in bonuses to useless traders who produce no goods or services of value, but demand the highest compensation in the world.

*If Free-Market Capitalism works-why to many of the Socialist countries of the world (Sweden, France, Germany Norway) have higher living standards and less violence than America?

The idea here was not that corporations could not own newspapers and media outlets to support their stated goals. The issue was whether or not these same corporations had the same rights as people, natural people. Corporations were never considered people by the founders and to this day, no law has ever been passed by Congress giving them that status. The rights of a corporation to have free speech is grounded in the first amendment which is about people having free speech, not legal groups of people which is what a corporation is and has always been. The strawman about a corporation owning a newspaper is a handy ruse which gives Roberts cover to allow any corporation to spend as much money as they want to pursue an agenda just as if...

Come on now! "Scientifically proven?" The free market cannot possibly be a source for any kind of morality. There needs to be a political and moral framework in place for the free market to function at all. Apart from moral beliefs that slavery is wrong, there is absolutely no reason why a free market cannot extend to slavery and human trafficking. Have you ever heard of the Old South? They bought and sold slaves just as you and I buy and sell lawnmowers or bottled water. The political and moral framework of the South made this market possible; destroy that framework (as we liberals eventually did) and slavery vanished.

How long before the banned book becomes the burned book? How many carbon credits have to be issued to burn and release all the CO2 for all the politically threatening books that espouse ideas that the administration dislikes.

Kagan should be filibustered

Should we be surprised by this? Obama stands for STATISM - thus the free markets are anathema to him -- he has surrounded himself with like-minded people and they want change away from the free market, thus Obamacare, Cap and Tax, etc.

The free market thrives when people do to others as they would have done to themselves. Countries that are governed by this rule also thrive. I wonder if Ms. Kagan (and Pres. Obama) have actually thought about this. Ms. Kagan would squash "corporate" speech during an election season. Has she ever considered that if corporate speech had been allowed in Nazi Germany, let alone individual speech, the numbers of people who would have been able to speak out against Hitler may have changed the course of history? (I won't even bother mentioning the Soviet Union. She and Obama probably still haven't bought into the evil of that state.)

Can he be cloned?

There can be no free market without respect for human life; and there is system other than the free market which results in the respect of human life. This have even been definitively, scientifically proven -- that the more integrated one is in the market order, the fairer one is. The market order contributes to the moral order making us more moral beings.

Your column makes a very important point. Morals matter and the more free people are the more they matter.
