Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

After the 2006 election, the question you heard conservatives asking over and over again was, "Did the Republicans learn anything from their defeat?"

As we now know, regrettably the answer to that question is "no" -- and so we're back once again trying to figure out if the GOP's 2nd savage beating in a row has stirred them from the Beltway bubble they've been firmly ensconced in over the last few years.

I would suggest to you that there is one surefire way to tell if the Republican Party has learned anything from the 2nd straight whooping that it has received, one test that will determine if we're going to come back in 2010 or remain wandering in the wilderness. If, as expected, Mitch McConnell is once again elected as Senate Minority Leader, then the GOP is still so far out of touch that they need a telescope to see the interests of the people who sent them to Washington in the first place.

Mitch McConnell is another one of these Republicans who came to Washington to drain the swamp and ended up deciding to pal around with the alligators. Some people might protest that isn't true -- and indeed, there was a time when Mitch McConnell was a genuine conservative leader.

However, McConnell has been inside the Beltway since 1984 and over time, he has learned to love the "compassionate conservative" kool-aid that has poisoned the Republican Party.

Just take a look back at Mitch McConnell's so-called "leadership."

McConnell supported amnesty in the Senate and even after it failed, he led the way in bringing it back. How many millions of dollars and votes did that finger in the eye of conservatives cost the Party in 2008?

The GOP's support of the bailout bill cost them seats in 2008, likely cost John McCain the election, and in the end turned out to be a very bad, very socialistic idea that didn't fix the problem. Of course, we can once again thank Mitch McConnell for helping to lead the Republican Party down that blind alley.

Speaking of blind alleys, we can't forget the Bridge to Nowhere. McConnell voted for it -- twice. When Tom Coburn showed some actual leadership on an issue that mattered to conservatives and tried to push through an amendment to move the money for the bridge over to Louisiana in order to help repair damage done by Katrina, Mitch McConnell voted against that common sense maneuver.

Even worse, McConnell actually campaigned this year on bringing pork back to Kentucky. That's right, folks, the Republican "leader" in the Senate got elected because he told voters in his home state that he could bring home more bacon than the other guy,

Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell said Thursday that Kentucky voters would make a terrible trade if they replaced him with a Democrat lacking the clout to deliver huge amounts of federal money he took credit for bringing back to the Bluegrass state.

...The senator drew applause from the business crowd when taking credit for bringing $500 million in federal funding back to the state last year.

He said that amount towers over the sums delivered by freshmen Senate Democrats.

"Just measuring clout related to state-specific issues, this would be a pretty tough trade - you trade me in for a rookie," McConnell told the crowd.

In other words, Mitch McConnell is representative of everything that's wrong with the Republican Party. He's a charisma-free, pro-amnesty, big government Republican who was in charge during a two-year period when the GOP lost AT LEAST 6 Senate seats (It could be more by the time it's all over).

What kind of message would it send to the Republican base and to the American people if Mitch McConnell is re-elected as Senate Minority Leader? That the Republicans are still big spenders? That the GOP rewards failure? That the Senate Republicans are more interested in their chummy little social club than looking out for the American people?

It would say all of those things and most importantly, it would send one overriding message loud and clear: the Republicans in the Senate didn't learn a d*mn thing from the 2008 election. It's just business as usual.

So, what can you do about this? Well, the leadership elections are about a week and a half away. If you're a blogger, write about it. If you're a talk radio host, talk about it. If you're a party activist, a big donor, or someone with sway, start pulling some strings. If you're just "Joe Sixpack" who wants to see the Party get back to its conservative roots, call your senator if he's a Republican -- and tell him you're going to judge the Senate GOP based on whether Mitch McConnell is the Senate Minority Leader in 2009. After you call your senator, write your favorite blogger, call your favorite talk show host, email your friends -- tell them all to oppose Mitch McConnell as Senate Minority Leader. But, who will replace him? Let the Republican senators pick anyone they want as long as it's not the guy who, besides George Bush and John McCain, is most responsible for the debacle the GOP just suffered through at the ballot box.

Folks, now is not the time for conservatives who care about our country to pout or slink off into the woodwork. Now is not the time for conservatives to sit down and shut up while the same people who have ruined the party for eight years fritter away another election cycle pushing the same failed policies. If conservatives stand up, send a message right from the beginning that the status quo is not acceptable, and convince Republican senators to dump Mitch McConnell -- then maybe, just maybe we can get the Republican Party going back in the right direction again.

You want to change the Republican Party? You want to do something to fight back against the Left? You want to try to save your country from the socialists that are going to spend the next four years looting, pillaging, and despoiling it? Then stop moping, stop complaining, say, "enough's enough" and do your part to stop Mitch McConnell!

Minority leader
Some Republican politicians would rather be in the minority sharing porks with the Dems than in the majority burdened with responsibilities to govern. Their priorities are: self, family and friends, cronies, clients, constituents at the time of election, party to help their reelections, country(?).

Hawkins....Kid, you still
have a lot to learn.

Though I agree with everything you wrote about McConnell, you still missed the boat.

You claim McConnell helped kill McLoser's chances: "He's a charisma-free, pro-amnesty, big government Republican"

Dude.... that phrase also describes McLOSER, and is exactly why HE lost!

It wasn't McConnell; it was McCAIN! A liberal!

I'd like to hear any moderate Repubican
explain to me again how it is that we need to move away from our conservative principles and attract the independant vote in order to win elections.

Anyone?

Bueller?

Bueller?
.

Hahaha, Ranger/Roberto

You want me to kick your butt on two threads?

Happy to oblige.

Oh, wait, why bother? Your inane comments will be disappearing in a few hours, anyway.

I'm right there with you
McConnell should have lost in a primary. Save that, Kentucky Republicans should have removed him by force.

Ranger29, I'm not sure, but I think you may be an idiot.

BrianR- all the 3rd parties put together
got 1.4% of the popular vote. 98.6% voted for one of the two lousy main candidates. NO ONE I've talked to actually liked McCain or Obama, but except for my wife and 3 friends they all voted for one or the other anyway - if they voted at all.

Un-freaking-believable.

As Rush pointed out, the one piece of good news is that turnout was lower than 2004, indicating the conservative base stayed home and didn't vote at all rather than vote for McCain. But I can't for the life of me figure out why someone would stay home rather than register a protest vote.

It kind of irritates me the Rush and Hannity claim to be conservatives first / GOP second, oppose McCain during the primaries, support him in the general, but are now back to ripping him to shreds. They'd have a lot more credibility in my book of they'd said they can't support a liberal for president no matter what party he's running with.

Wobbie, I know McCain's landslide loss has been depressing, but you really ought to sober up before posting here so your comments at least make a little bit of sense.

I guess that stings to have your political world view completely repudiated, though, so I don't blame you for getting ripped.

BrianR
Good evening from the Sunshine State. Well, Obama's in. Hardly a surprose, although i think McCain might have made it escept for the housing debacle. The saddest part of the whole deal to me is that it is true that a majority of American voters are so stupid, or greedy, or naive a to elect an Obama. I have not deviated from my belief that in the long run, the possiblity that he will be a wake-up call makes him a better choice than McCain. So far as McConnel goes, i knew when he and Boehner were retained after the 2006 pasting that the GOP leadership, including McCain had learned nothing. Ivy is right. If we are going to have left wingers in there, better have a D after their name. No chance for a turnaround otherwise.
As for Obama, his promise to unite the country, seen as BS by every conservative, and code for "our way or the hiway" by the pure left, is already a demonstrated ploy. I say ploy because its more polite than saying lie. But there are people who believed him and voted for this vision. Good intentions, unintended consequences, etc etc. Good luck out there in LaLa land. I'm looking forward to buck season at my Pa farm. Golly, i hope i don't have to try to make a going concern out of it again. Hard scrabble is not my game.

Mr. Hawkins, I think you're right.......
I think you are right about the need for a change. I agree with your descriptions of the Senate, in general......social club, cronyism, not involved at all with Main Street. I would also add that they are seldom really interested in or proactive on issues. To put it bluntly, I believe most are simply interested in staying in office.

For the Senate Republicans to choose a new leader would send a message that they are willing to change their self-serving ways. I am not familiar with Senators from other states, so I do not know who the new leader would be. I would definitely say that it should be someone with spunk and spark. The new leader needs to also make sure all Senators listen to their constituents. That should be a requirement. I heard that Elizabeth Dole spent only one month per year in NC. No wonder she wasn't elected (besides her stupid ad)!

There was a Senator who would have been a good leader......Sununu. But he's gone now.

Chris

You're confusing the message with Barr's vote count. That's almost meaningless.

You have to understand that for every vote that went to Barr or Baldwin (or Nader, for that matter) there's a very significant number that believe the same way they do but didn't bother voting for them, or showing up at the polls.

This is clearly understood by anyone with a background in marketing or sales. When you conduct an opinion survey on your products, you don't survey every single possible consumer; that's impossible. You survey members of your target market, with the realization that each of them represents X number of consumers, and that X is generally a pretty high number.

It's also why it's very helpful to write letters or make calls to your representatives, because they know that for every one person who actually takes the time to do that, there's a very large X number of people who DON'T, and therefore your voice acts as a representative for a whole bunch of other people.

So in looking at Barr's numbers, for example, a professional would know that his half million votes actually represents, say, 3 million or 5 million people who would have voted for him if they'd voted at all in that race.

The representative proportion varies by application. In marketing, you figure ten to one, generally. In political contact (and Letters to the Editor) I've read the weighting is somewhere between 50 to 60 to one.

Do you think I expected to see Barr's numbers in the millions??????

Never. I'd have been surprised if he hit 2%. I think he did pretty well at 1%.

Don't worry; the drones at GOP Central are getting the message. IMO, we were VERY successful.

I wouldn't mind seeing my senator,
Jeff Sessions, take the leadership. He's been disappointing on some spending issues (voted for the farm bill, etc). But he was out front against McCain's amnesty, and opposed this bailout - which should be the acid test for the next leader. I have no use for any Republican that supported that socialist ripoff.

PS, Chris

Limbaugh has no creds with me, for exactly the reason you stated.

He talks the talk, but when push comes to shove, he doesn't walk the walk.

He's jumped the shark, frankly, along with Hannity, Medved, and whole lotta others.

Very few of the spokesholes came out intact. Coulter, Malkin, maybe a couple of others, because when the rubber hit the road, the vast majority proved to just be GOP hacks.

BrianR, honestly, I had hoped that
the Barr + Baldwin vote would exceed the 1.1% best showing for a recent vote count for limited government (I don't really consider Perot in that category). But they only got 0.7%.

But, like you were saying, if McCain got 6 million votes less than Bush did in 2004, that means a lot of people stayed home...

on Rush & Hannity & the others-
I listed to Rush on the way to a customer site today. He said a bunch of stuff that was frankly silly, such as:

- the "Obama recession", when referring to the stock market plunge since the election. While I agree that Obama owns that plunge, and the Dems are partially culpable for the current economic crisis, the GOP is absolutely to blame as well. They had all three houses for most of 6 years and didn't fix the problems they knew were there.

- saying that Russia announced missle & jamming placement because Obama was elected. We all know good and well they would have done the same thing if McCain was elected, because the Russians know there's not a darn thing we can do about it. Actually, I thought it was unusually respectful of the Russians to wait until after our election to make the announcement.

Oh yeah - and Rush also said
"conservatism wasn't on the ballot."

It was on my presidential ballot twice. Just not under the Republican category.

I agree with you that Coulter kept her credibility. I disagree, but I can respect her "let's get so drunk we can barely walk and go vote for McCain" approach.

Conservatism won, and handily.
All Democrats, especially The Great Correctly-Pigmented Hope would not have been elected had they not campaigned on the misrepresentation that they held key conservative positions.

That's right, CONSERVATIVE positions is what won the decisive votes for ALL liberals in this election.

If Obama had told the truth about his stances on Constitutional, security, economic and social issues he would NOT have been elected.

Because Obama and ALL Democrats (who are all liberal) lied about their positions and because the media did nothing to challenge them but mostly because their lame-brained Repub opponents never challenged them, they got away with it.

CONSERVATISM WON HANDS DOWN IN THIS ELECTION AS IT ALWAYS DOES!

P.S.
Rush Limbaugh was dead on in saying that conservatism was not on the ballot. Voters did not have an opportunity to vote for or against a conservative presidential candidate on this ballot. They had the choice between a Marxist posing as a moderate liberal and a moderate liberal posing as I'll-be-moderate-or-conservative-or-liberal-whatever-will-get-your-vote Jackass. And let's not be juvenile about what is meant about being on the ballot. Anyone who actually listened to Rush make the comment knows that Rush was referring only to the presidential race.

Country Club Republicans

ivy,

You have deftly described "Blue Blood" or "Country Club" Republicans which are the bane of the Republican Party.

We need to throw the Blue Bloods under the Elephant or get off the Elephant!

Every Republican who voted for the near-trillion dollar bailout should have been disavowed.

Every Republican who voted for McCain-Kennedy should have been disavowed.

Every Republican who voted for McCain-Feingold should have been disavowed.

Every Republican who participated in "gang of x" sabotage should have been disavowed.

Show me a truly pro-life Democrat? How about a truly pro-Iraq War Democrat? Know any truly anti-"global warming" Democrats? No. No. and No.

Because the one thing the Democrats excel at is knowing that an organization exists only to the extent that it requires its members to support its platform.

The Republican Party is a freaking joke!

BrianR: You don't listen to Rush.

Only someone who does not listen to Rush would spew the baldfaced lie that Rush was a GOP hack.

Rush Limbaugh was and is a consistent and vehement critic of liberlism in the Republican Party and everywhere else.

It is patently ignorant to say that a person loses their credibility if they oppose someone in the primaries and then suggest voting for them in the general election.

McCain-Feingold made McCain and all those who voted for his Constitutional-shredding bill a traitor to this country. I think McCain at a minimum should be permanently banned from ever holding an elected, appointed or hired position at any level of any government within the borders of United States ever again.

And if the GOP lets that undermining, disloyal snake in the grass continue to kick them in the throat, it will only confirm the need for a complete overhaul of that brain dead party.

But I voted for the bastãrd McCain because I would have rather had a dimwitted liberal jerk than a dimwitted, angry, Marxist, Black Nationalist cipher.

You and Chris need to see someone about your Rush-envy problem.

Pamela
"I heard that Elizabeth Dole spent only one month per year in NC. No wonder she wasn't elected (besides her stupid ad)!"

A month? I'm astonished that she spent that much time outside the Beltway _in toto_. An absentee can still keep her finger on her constituents' pulse, however. Dole proved it every time she cruised through, resplendent in her Whip Inflation Now buttons, promising to help Charlotte land a major sports franchise.

"To put it bluntly, I believe most are simply interested in staying in office."

That's actually charitable. Here's a _blunt_ assessment -- no, wait, TH won't let me say that.

". . .I do not know who the new leader would be. I would definitely say that it should be someone with spunk and spark."

I agree. How about Tom Coburn? He stands no chance, of course, and I doubt that he wants the job. But he'd shake up those complacent -- nahhh, TH probably won't let me say that, either.

Pamela/Peleocon
'I heard that Elizabeth Dole spent only one month per year in NC. No wonder she wasn't elected (besides her stupid ad)!'

She was to NC what Clinton has been to NYS - a carpetbagger. Her constituents finally demonstrated they could see her casual attachment to the state and its interests. She was part of the republican 'compassionate conservative' disorientation. The only interest she ever seemed to promote was her reelection, and those of other like minded GOP senators through her NRSC work.

Now she'll have plenty of time to deal with Robert's viagra fixation.

Agreed
The younger GOP members in congress need to execute a Night of the Long Knives and purge the party of the old corrupt collaborators. Those eunuchs need to disappear.

Once cleansed of its deadwood, the GOP then needs to adopt a strategy of true conservatism, a narrative that's appropriate for these times, and groom articulate spokesmen for the plan, people who can stand erect, not begin every sentence with a humble apology to the communists, and not back down from petty journalists.

One day The One, our Messiah, the Most Holy, will fall from the heavens and the deluded masses will be confronted with the ugly reality that he his merely mortal. Their disappointment will be great and the GOP will need to be ready with an alternative.

A Lot of Good That'll Do!
Hawkins says to contact our "Republican" senator. A lot of good that would do me! Pennsylvania has one Democrat and one RINO, Arlen Specter!

The Republican Party is DEAD.

Surviving Obamination
There's not a word of your analysis I can disagree with regard to Rush. He never promoted McCain but certainly cited chapter and verse in opposition to the messiah as far worse.

As he has repeatedly pointed out, moderate, compromising republicans DO NOT WIN. Bush duped a major portion of his base with his 'compassionate conservatism' which turned out to be liberalism as practiced by a republican. After 2004, the base simply got fed up with being lied to by their own party.

Rove may have crafted a clever stratagem that kept Bush in office but his legacy is a wrecked GOP, a fascist takeover and an 'all for me' attitude among the scattered remnants.

As to McConnell, I wouldn't have minded seeing him go. Now watch him start making the 'me first' survivalist kind of deals that has characterized this bunch for the last eight years. We most likely won't see, not once, total republican party Senate unity that will stop some particularly egregious lib initiative.

So why the cloture concern for having 40 plus GOP senators when the majority of them act like RINO wh0res, for sale to the highest bidder?

wobbie29 Location: TX Reply # 4
If you don't mind twerp, this is a conversation for Conservatives of which you ain't one libby. Don't you need to be down at wal-mart working on your helo? Take a hike puke.

LMFAO hic! (not used with blubberbutt the seatbuffers permission, because I will NEVER ask for it!)

My email to Mitch:
Dear Senator McConnell,

First, allow me to offer you my sincerest congratulations on winning a fifth term to the US Senate. As you may or may not know, I am a donor to the GOP and I supported your campaign. Yours was the only yard sign I had in my yard this year.

I would be remiss if I failed to let you know of my frustration with the state of the Republican party. This "bringing home the bacon" crud has got to stop. This election, I did something that I rarely do: I split my voting ticket and voted for Ben Chandler. His vote against the financial bailout indicated to me that he was being financially responsible to the tax payers. Not only in his district, but to the nation as well.

I say this to you now as a warning shot across the bow. I will be watching to see if you have learned anything by the bloodbathes Republicans have taken the last two elections. Fiscal responsibility is something all true conservatives demand.

I voted for you this time around in an atttempt to prevent the Democratic super majority they so desired. However next time, if you have not truly earned my vote, I will give it to a true socialist, rather than the socialist-lite you appear to be at the moment.

I wish you succcess in representing me and other conservatives in Kentucky. Please know that I pray for my representatives regularly that they serve with distinction, honor, integrity, and selflessness.

Best wishes,
Tod Kozeluh

Mr. Hawkins
I think it is time to drag people like Palin and Jindal over to third party and dump these other clowns.
They are about as smart and porky as well....as wobbie!

LMFAO hic! (not used with blubberbutt the seatbuffers permission, because I will NEVER ask for it!)

It is way past time ......
It is way past time the Republican party got itself righted. I suggest everyone who participated actively in our Conservative disasters, take a long walk on a short pier, including Mitchell. Better, new leadership is the only solution to the disappearance of the Repulblican party!

The Plumber Location: CO Reply # 7
The rest of us have been sure of that fact as long as wobbie wanna be wanger has been here.

LMFAO hic! (not used with blubberbutt the seatbuffers permission, because I will NEVER ask for it!)

hmmmm
I live in Ky and i did vote for McConnell to go back to the Senate and i agree with John Hawkins. And yes McConnell did brag about bringing home the pork to the state and that burned me up. In the primary i do not think any body ran against him. In the general election he ran against B. Lunsford a guy who wants a unversial health care. He wanted even more gov control over the economy. Just look at the adds he ran here.

and if the Republican party is smart then they better get back to the roots and be for much smaller gov, if that is even possible now? I think with now President Obama the country moves to be like somewhat France. European type of socialist welfare nanny state. what a land we will live in after the next 4-8 years of policies that will eat this country alive in taxes.

i wonder if i can find a job down in texas to move to from here? at least then i won,t have to worry about a state income tax.

Rebuilding the party
I'm not sure gutting all the leadership is the best thing for the Republican party, but it may take something that drastic to right it (I mean that literally) again. Clearly, the long-time Washington illuminati insiders -- and McConnell is one of them -- have compromised too much. Democrats know who they are. It's time for Republicans to stand up and reclaim their core values.

vamtns41 Location: NC Reply # 30
I would agree but with people like wobbie (if he actually did vote McCain which I doubt) in the party, we may need to abandon them and start fresh.
With the current two party system and the way people in blue states crossed over and chose McCain for us and then provided no delegates for him in the race, those states prove we need a party that they will NOT WANT to cross over and vote in.
That way we won't be stuck with a dud and a hot Conservative tomato!

Before everyone is
so quick to throw McConnell under the bus you best realize that he is an expert at blocking Dem legislation.

I must admit however that I am leaning towards removal and the GOP awaits my answer on it.

As to Republicans like McConnell...if you don't like the pork projects then you had better get involved with GOP and stay involved to put a stop to that. However, not all pork is bad. Just most of it.

Complaining on a blog doesn't count as involvement or voting third party either. You had your chance at great leadership in 2004 with Imhofe and you let Republicans and Dems throw him under the bus.

For the first time...
...since I began voting(1956),I voted for no Republican. Here in upstate New York we have many partys'on the ballot, but a lot of them just endorse, for president, one of the two major party candidates. But we have the Libertarian party and that is who I voted for,Bob Barr and the straight Libertarian ticket.

Sorry Republicans,to paraphrase Ronald Reagan:"I didn't leave the Republican party, the Republican party left me"!

To conservatives...
do you guys even really and truly know how your own party and government works?

You can say "Stop all the Pork" all you want but in reality the pork takers are the re-electors.

Go after the pork takers and stop being foolish.

Where Did They go?
Where did the conservatives disappear to in Washington and why did they hand McCain over to us when most of us barely see him as a Republican, not conservative by any means. McCain goes on the campaign trail, touting Lieberman at us in every turn. That was just to make sure everyone knew he wasn't a conservative in the first place. True conservatism always wins but we haven't seen it from our party since Reagan. The Republicans are listening more to the media and feeling that they have to reinvent themselves now and that means moving closer to the left. They aren't listening to the people that are in their voting base and they actually wonder what is happening? But they are so out of touch with the conservatives out here that they don't have a freak'n clue anymore. We know tax and spend doesn't work, we know you guys in WAshington making your deals, selling the people that voted for you OUT because of a.... a bridge? Money is power and I think all these politicians have gotten so power mad and they all can't believe how easy it was to get away with that bailout and tack on so many nice gifts to their buddies - Democrats and Republicans alike. It's like a feeding frenzy going on in Washington. They are spending like they are insane and the Obama is going to tell us to tighten our belts and sacrifice? The are spending, they went us to send them more money so they can continue this disgusting behavior that they are all participating in over there? And all the Libs go "yeah...Obama is going to save us?" The Republican party needs to go find it's balls and return to what it should be representing and that is conservatism and not join the leftists because it's more fun to spend. And the McCain camp needs to make a statement here and stick up for Palin and not let his aides trash her like this. Makes him look even more foolish staying silent.

reconstruction...
means out with the "old".
And...PLease...although I respect the man and his family...no more input from the Bush family.

No More Money For You
I'm with Nam65-66. I was horrified that my least favorite Republican got the party nomination and only voted for McCain as an anti-Obama vote. But I was more troubled that the Republican Machine scolded and pooh-poohed those like me and told us to get in line or else. The person who best reflected my position this year was Roberta McCain who said I'd hold my nose and vote for her son. Frankly, I'm for Conservatives seceding from the Republican party. I promise that in all future elections if the candidates aren't conservatives or brag about how many times they've crossed party lines, I'm not voting for them even if I like their VP pick. And wishy-washy conservatives, please don't ask me for money cause you ain't gettin' it anymore no matter how bad the boogeyman on the other team is painted.

to Surviving the Obamanation on Rush:
Instead of insulting BrianR and me, how about answering the substance of what was said. If you listen to Rush, you know how he feels about symbolism & substance.

I said 4 things about him. First, he supported McCain in the general election. Can you dispute that? Yes, he was frequently critical of McCain's campaign tactics, but he made absolutely clear that he thinks the base should all go vote for that bas&*$d (as you so accurately described McCain). I think if Rush was really a conservative first and a Republican second, he would not have been so supportive. And Hannity was even worse.

I then mentioned three things Rush said on the radio over the last two days that were wrong (on Russion missles, the "Obama recession", and conservatism not being on the ballot). Care to defend Rush on any of them?

Here's another one: Rush has been hammering this 401(k) confiscation thing (daily?) since Argentina nationalized their pensions. But the fact is there is a Marxist professor and one or two democrat congressmen talking about it. That's it. The fact is the Dems don't dare confiscate the 401(k)s in this country - they'd be a minority for a generation. Rush was using that as a scare tactic to get out the vote for a guy who is a little less socialist than Obama.

So, StO, envy has nothing to do with it. Answer the substance if you think Rush is right about this stuff.

Those of you who said 3rd party votes
are wasted: Imagine how much easier this debate between us (limited government conservatives) and the blue-blood Republicans would be if Bob Barr and Chuck Baldwin had taken 10% of the popular vote...

Staying home INCREASES the percent vote Obama gets and makes his landslide look like a mandate. Voting third party, on the other hand, rejects the unacceptable candidate of your own party while leaving the really bad candidate from the other party with less than a majority and thus a minimal mandate.

I'd like to hear what you think now from anyone who wrote "a vote for Barr is a vote for Obama".

more on Rush for StO:
I should temper my comments by saying I still like listening to Rush, and I think we conservatives owe him a huge debt for promoting the philosophy of limited government.

I've been a fan since early 1990...

I just think that in this case - in supporting McCain - Rush got it wrong. The contortions he's had to go through to support McCain demonstrate that.

I Still wonder
how it is I ended up on his e-mail list and I get at least 1-2 a day where he is touting his Conservative views and begging for money for his campaign?
In fact, I am still getting them from the NRSC for the run offs and the Al Frankenstupid recount.

Chris from AL
You are stupid get out of my party.

To the other conservatives...
go ahead and pull out your support of the RNC...you will get change alright but not the change you seek.

No wonder the GOP is in tatters.

You may think you know conservatism but you don't know the mechanics of government and more importantly politics.

Lolo1, care to be more specific?
Or maybe use punctuation, if you're so intelligent?

McConnell is one of many
If the Republican Party wants to regain a position of influence in this nation, it needs to remember what brought it to power and what it did for 12 years that brought about it's downfall. Additionally, they need to "grow a pair" and fight against the opposition at every turn, just as the dems will do. If the party presents timid responses to the abuses of the dems, they will never appeal to conservatives or independents. Get a bone in your back and conduct yourselves with honor and integrity. Otherwise, crawl away and bother us no more.

chris
"I just think that in this case - in supporting McCain - Rush got it wrong. The contortions he's had to go through to support McCain demonstrate that."

Since McCain was nominated what choice did he have? He didn't nominate him! You have little or no knowledge of how things work and you had best learn before commenting.

As to the 401k...the Dems want to raise the taxes on them. Do you know how they are taxed? Capital gains. But also be aware that 401k's are not pre-taxed. Yes your contribution lowers your overall gross, which lowers your taxes. If the Dems change this entire financial sectors will be killed.

Do you even know how your 401k money is used?

P.S. Rush was right....there was no conservatism on the ticket...get active in the GOP and get the primaries changed.

Lolo1 Location: CA Reply # 48
No wonder the GOP is in tatters.

Agreed, but how will we ever come together if we can not get the right people to run.
I believe the party is in serious trouble.
If we don't work together and come together (Republicans and Third party) and present viable candidates for both sides, the GOP may well go the way of the wigs, in terms of the number of votes.
I know this election proved one thing to me, the days of holding my nose are all over.
If the GOP continues it's present course, I will have no choice but to go third party,

Palin/Jindal in 2012!

Re: Turncoat!!
McConnell did what every politian does to keep on that gravy train, lie, cheat, and step on people who helped him, to do what? Nothing more that turning coat!!!

Back
In a bit, have to put out a fire that just came up at work.

What Do You Want!

Those Conservatives who helped Barack Obama be elected as POTUS are proud!

They didn't hold their nose like the rest of us and vote against Marxist/Obama.

McCain would have taken America further left, Barack Obama will take America into Marxist/Socialism.

These people do NOT understand problem solving. It is easier to dig America out of a 10 foot hole than a 1000 foot hole.

This doesn't matter to these theorists who have demonstrated NO plan for recovery, just a petulant, childish tantrum on "You Will Do What I Want" or I will make sure you suffer.

They want to 'Teach Us a Lesson' - I am ready, tell us the lesson plan and the things you want us to learn.

I am a person who wants a limited government and a return to a Constitutional Republic and NOT a 'mob rule' Democracy. I want a limited government that will protect us from a hostile world of radical terrorists.

I do NOT want a vulgarized society that legalizes prostitution, drug addiction, unrestricted pornography on television and the promotion of homosexuality.

What type of society do you want for America?

What should we do dismantle our Armed forces?

If our foes are massed on our borders ready to strike, should we NOT have a preemptive strike against them?

Our airwaves are a limited resource and most of you think they should be unrestricted - our highways are a limited resource should we have NO restriction on them?

Mail is a limited resource - NO restrictions there?

Food and clean water are limited resources - NO restrictions there?

What is it you want?

Actually, McConnell helped stop
the Dem. Senate from accomplishing much of anything for two years, and helped give the Dem. Congress its 9% approval rating.

McDonnell wil be the one that stops the Big Bro O's idiot judges' nominations and tsunami of tax hikes that are prediced to come down the pike.

No More Cheap Labor Importers
If the GOP wants to be the party representing the employers of the illegal aliens instaed of the citizens, they will go the way of the Whigs.

GOP-RIP

Third Party?
What we need is a SECOND party.

Both parties said simillar things about each topic so we can only see ONE party inside the Beltway as of now. This election proved it beyond doubt.

Re-election of McConnel will only serve to confirm this fact. Mass defection to the Libertarian Party or Constitutional Party would send a message that would inspire hope in conservatives and maybe get US back on track as the great country we are.

Absolutism
Absolutism in the defense of Conservatism is not a vice.
With apologies to Barry Goldwater.
I think it is clearly unproductive when Conservatives think that McCain somehow hurt the Republican party by going along with the bailout. What if he had "stood tall" and refused to go along with what we now realize was a not sufficent effort to stop the meltdown. With 20/20 hindsight we can see that he might have gotten away with it and looked like a hero since it didn't really stop much of problem, but (A)that was not known at the time and (B)if he and the Republican caucus had refused to go along the Democrats would have hung the ensuing meltdown on the Republicans and McCain and the entire country would not of forgiven the Republican Party for a generation. Think about it. It was a clear time of crisis and Government had to act. Did it turn into a less than successful process, well maybe the jury is still out, but to claim that McCain or the Republicans could have not cooperated is a silly proposition and one that will not help us further the recovery of our party.

defeated
Republicans/conservatives will continue to loose until we can defeat the media. We live in a sound bite world. Just about everyone i talk to spews out soundbites and not much more. They don't listen to talk radio they don't bother digging for the truth. 5 minutes reading the paper or the half hour nightly news is their world. The wishy washy no *alls republicans in congress scratch their heads wondering if they have to get back to the base. They do but more important they have to stay clean, no scandals (media feeding frenzy) and they have to defeat the media by getting in its face, getting out there and telling the truth. They have to do this without looking like whiners. Good luck.

Doc.BitterOwnerClinger
Okay the add on to your handle makes me smile every single time I read it!!!

Dear do you know how the Dems really won this election? Really and truly?

They built a coalition and presented a united front no matter what! Do you know when they started building that coalition? 1994! They don't air their dirty laundry in public.

Yes they had Hollywood help and most definitely the media...however they didn't win it for them. The MSM and Hollywood has been liberal for decades. When you present a united front, coupled with a message that resonates, you win.

First and foremost get involved in the GOP. That is how you boot out the yahoo's who are not even remotely conservative. The GOP waters have been so muddied that they are undrinkable. Know that you have to compromise, but first know where you are willing to compromise and not willing. Now staunch hard core righties can go and say they want a third party all they want. They are a minority and will forever be fringe.

My suggestion is every conservative send a 5.00 or 10.00 check to the RNC coupled with a letter. That letter should list what you think and what you want. Then tell them if they want more money and on a regular basis what you expect. The money is bait. Get together with your fellow GOP'ers and get active and apply pressure.

Me I am starting with the elitists. Time for the Kathleen Parkers and Peggy Noonan's to go. They are out of touch. Conform or be gone. Margaret Hoover is another. IMO also, Evangelicals are not being used in proper context. They make demands but ask yourself what do they do? Not much.

The GOP deserves it's current fate. They have not used the media, kept up with the current trends to combat them, or done enough to develop up and comers. They haven't used the internet wisely either or reached out to the 18-30 demographic.

All relationships in life require constant maintenance no matter what the relationship is, and that's a two way street.

What is your reversal plan?

The registration of political parties are:

Democrats are 33%

Republications 29%

Independents 38% - 62% of which would favor Barack Obama and the left.

That makes 63% of all registered voters favoring Barack Obama.

This information is from the 2004 election.

Over 40% of Americans do NOT pay income tax - how will you convince them that it is in their best interest to pay taxes?

These numbers will increase dramatically after 8 years of Barack Obama.

What is your plan to reverse this?

The sooner we start the better chance for reversal.

In better systems
That being the parliamentary system, when the leader of the party (the PM or the leader of the opposition party) loses the general election he or she usually resigns and someone else takes over. It is nearly automatic.

McConnell lost 25 seats or so in 2006. He should have resigned then. He has now lost 20 something again? The entire GOP leadership in both the House and Senate should resign and if not, the GOP membership should oust them.

rts
"Republicans/conservatives will continue to loose until we can defeat the media. We live in a sound bite world."

That is true! However the media is liberal and the way to combat that is to deliver on your promises. They hold Republicans to a different set of standards. Know that going in. Democrats only delivered on one promise that they made in 2006 and the media will not hold them accountable, but if it were Reps they would. So deliver on the promises and do it consistently and eventually Reps will be bullet proof to the media. they are dying anyway. They will either conform or be extinct and either way is fine with me.

Another suggestion is to use PAC's year round. Where is it written that they can only be used during election cycles?

Another way to combat is send out text messages to emails and cell phones. Just like Obama did during the election. Up to the minute rebuttal.

Akagi
"McConnell lost 25 seats or so in 2006.'

No that would be Bill Frist.

Palin For McCain/Kennedy
If you want to keep your country, you must stop voting for people who are unwilling to uphold the rule of law. Palin is one of them. she does not think we can/should enforce our immigration laws.

Setting Something Straight

There are more registered Independents than Republicans.

Independents need Republicans to win these elections - why should we join you?

BrianR
McCain lost because of Bush. When your leader of your party has a 24% approval ratimg you are going to lose even if he isn't on the ballot. Look at Truman in 1952. Not since 1876 has a party stayed in power during an economic downturn (and they had to steal Florida to do it). If Bush had an approval rating of say 54% and the economy was at least holding it own, McCain would be president-elect today.

You can blame Bush for this lost. McCain deep down must hate Bush. He and his dirty allies cost him the nomination in 2000 and now he cost him the 2008 election.

New Blood a Must
It is a must that the Republicans elect new leadership with traditional conservative values.

More importantly, we must have leadership in our national party leadership, as well. We must change our thought to one of winning over people to our views...the policies which have worked for this nation.

We allowed ourselves to believe that if we reached across it would lead to more votes from a more-loving electorate. Hah, all it got us is bitten...

Get in our states, our cities, and our schools and start changing this back around...we have a lot of ground to recapture...

Lolo1 @ 8:57 et al

Great Post and I agree with it 100%.

We need to start NOW!

Lolo
He was the still in the leadership in 2006--thus he and the rest of the GOP leadership in both houses have lost nearly 50 seats in the House and who knows how bad it will get finally in the Senate, lost 6 so far and maybe will be 9--Chambliss, Coleman and Stevens in danger.

If the Democrats get 59, I bet they start playing nice with Lieberman at this point the slimeball from Searchlight is trying to strip him of his Chairmanship.

Weijiniya Aiguoren (Va. Patriot)
Actually we don't know where Palin stands.

She said the US can't deport 12 million illegals (true) and even if it could it would be inhumane (true again). She said that the laws should be respected and the rights of legal immigrants respected, but there has to be some way illegal aliens earn a way to citizenship. Like it or not millions of illegals have deep roots in the US--they have American children, American spouses, own American businesses and own American property and have lived in the US for years if not decades. They aren't going anywhere and at some point you will have to normalize their status.

This doesn't mean all illegals, but those that have established deep roots in the US will have to be. Saying you support a path to citizenship is not the same as saying you support McCain-Kennedy.

You might want to notice that to most Americans immigration is way way way down on the list of what issues are important. I think last I saw only 6% viewed it as important.

They just elected a guy who supports giving illegals a path to citizenship, increasing the number of legal immigrants, and in the past has supported giving drivers licenses to illegals.

The majority still voted for him and even in states which has immigration issues--New Mexico, Nevada, California, and Colorado.

Keep banging the immigration dead horse. It is not a winning issue. It simply drives legal Hispanics into the arms of the Democrats. McCain even though he supported immigration reform did much worse than did Bush and that hurt him in places like Nevada, New Mexico and Colorado.

Libertarians and other fringes which post here had the effect in this election of:

"Flatulence in a Hurricane."

I will waste no further posts on them.

Let us sane people work to bring our Republican party into the modern age.

I have to leave for my volunteer duties and will return this evening.

Mitch McConnell
I have written to Sen. McConnell before the eclection, about these ads promising more porks to KY. But all my emails had been ignored, and instead, I received more letters soliciting contribution to McConnell's canpaign. AND the campaign continued to promote Sen. McConnell's earmarks platform, right to the election day.

I think most people in Kentucky see it the same way as I did: there are two issues at stake out there, our national security and the US Supreme Court justices, that we can not afford Democrats' fillibuster-proof majority. So, I did sadly cast my vote to McConnell. The new congress that convenes in Jan. 2009 will mark the end of Sen. McConell's political career.

I agree with Mr. Hawskin, we need a new Minority Leader in the Senate.

Stagnation in leadership
How did the party with a woman on it's ticket do so poorly with single voting women? If half of them are abortioist, anti-death penalty, drug abusing hippies, their childern, and want to bes. That still leave alot of women voters that could not compromise with McCain on most issues. Traditional conservative values: one man/ one woman marriage in the sight of God and man, small government, separation of state rights from federal mandates, abortion is murder by choice, term limits and limits on benefits of office holders, and open records of all those seeking public office. Without removing the congressional authority that give congress raises and bonuses at will, which also alway increase the size of their pensions nothing will change. Financial responsibility have to start in congress. Term limits to stop lobbist stagnation payment, pork barrel spending and earmarks.

We Need Some House (and Senate) Cleaning
I've never liked the term, "compassionate conservative", because it smacks of big government, not honest-to-goodness conservatism. There is nothing compassionate about the government blowing money, seized from the ants--industrious people who have worked and saved to get themselves ahead, on illegal aliens, corporate welfare and other members of the "grasshopper" class.

We conservatives in Florida can start by replacing Mel Martinez with a true conservative--not a "compassionate conservative" who in effect really is a wimpy version of a Democrat. Kentucky needs to do the same with Mitch McConnell.

Akagi
I both agree and disagree with you. I don't blame Mitch totally for the losses in 2006. He did block some serious legislation by the Dems. However I do think we need a change.

As to immigration I both agree and disagree. Americans for years said "Come on over and work for cheap"...well there is no such thing as cheap is there? So to an extent we are going to have to allow some of them to stay and quite frankly there are some that have earned it. To the felons I say "Get out!" Importing criminals make no sense. Also a lot of this can be done through simple enforcement.

As to the numbers...12 million is a flat out lie and it also really is only aimed at Latinos. Reality is in a nation of 300+ million people 12 million is a drop of water in five gallon bucket. Illegal immigration would not be so noticeable if it were only 12 million. And let's face it we don't even think illegal when looking at other races and there are illegals here from all over the world.

Look to this issue to heat up again as the economy crumps. People are going to demand that what jobs there are don't go to illegals and they aren't going to want their taxes going to welfare either with the ever soaring deficit.

America is growing quite the huge 'bail out' mentality whether it is in the business sector, financials, or welfare. It is nothing more in my view as poorly performed social engineering.

Duyen
You are right to call out McConnell on his pork, but also we must start going after those receiving the pork!!!!

Those receiving the pork are the one's that are leading the re-election process. Pork buys backing, which then is repaid in campaign contributions and endorsements, which then gets one re-elected.

Just ask Murtha!

Perhaps the Reps should get together and once again make a no pork pledge and stick to it in the name of rough economic times. They should also call out those asking for it. As McCain likes to say "Make them famous!"

Lolo-RGeek-BrianR-VPat-Doc-Others
I am a LONG TIME Rush Listener. Rush was VERY critical of McCain, but he felt (as I did) that he could not in GOOD CONSCIENCE cast a vote that would, in effect, turn Ronald Reagan’s “Shining City on a Hill” over to an ACORN Slumlord. That is what happened anyway, but that was the principle guiding Rush, myself and MILLIONS of others. I don’t mean to toot my own horn, but…TOOT…TOOT! LMAO! HIC!

Lesser of two evils
The only reason I voted for McConnell was to keep his opponent out of the Senate, who, if he would have gotten elected, would have been like sending a weasel in the hen house to get rid of the fox.

We need a strong Republican willing to step up to force the old guard out of leadership, otherwise Republicans will be relegated to permanent minority status. That's what the Dems have planned. Roosevelt used the Great Depression to push policies in an attempt to make Dems the permanent majority and Obama has already indicated he will try the same.

But, who's willing to step up?

Calling my Senator
I'd love to except he's worse than McConnell. My Senator is Arlen Spector.

HOW TO DESTROY A PARTY IN 8 EASY YEARS

.....GW was handed the keys to the Kingdom with majorities in both houses ...he is leaving with Democrats controlling both Houses and a Left Wing Democrat in the White House ...

.....GW should be the poster boy for how to lose elections ...if he had been on the ballot instead of McCain he would have lost by 80-20 ...

.....The poison that killed Bush's Presidency? ...Bi-partisanship ...I don't understand how Republicans can run on this promise and still win ...I think they should be rejected like the plague ...you can't compromise with Liberals and still call yourself a conservative .....COLOSSUS

Lolo1 writes about Rush Limbaugh:
"Since McCain was nominated what choice did he have?"

Obviously, to support or not support. He chose to support. I think that was a mistake. Had Rush encouraged his listeners to vote 3rd party and they did, the GOP would never again dare to nominate a liberal.

Lolo1: "You have little or no knowledge of how things work and you had best learn before commenting."

Look in the mirror, pal. You're the one who thought McCain could win by appealing to independents.

Lolo1: "As to the 401k...the Dems want to raise the taxes on them."

Which Dems? 1 or 2 are talking about it. That's not "The Dems". The rest may want to, but they know they better not do it - or even discuss it - or they'll get voted out.

And yes, I understand exactly how 401(k)s work. The capital gains in 401(k)s are NOT taxed - that money is only taxed when withdrawn during retirement when the person is presumably in a low tax bracket.

Lolo1 writes "If the Dems change this entire financial sectors will be killed."

Yes, that's my point - if they do that, they'll kill the economy and be punished for it.

Lolo1: "P.S. Rush was right....there was no conservatism on the ticket [sic - Rush said 'ballot']"

Bob Barr and Chuck Baldwin are conservatives, and they were both on my ballot. Rush was wrong.

baseballdoc
".....The poison that killed Bush's Presidency? ...Bi-partisanship ...I don't understand how Republicans can run on this promise and still win ...I think they should be rejected like the plague ...you can't compromise with Liberals and still call yourself a conservative"

Yes you can and sometimes you have to compromise. Liberals are American citizens and have the same rights as you and I.

What Bush failed to do was lead the party and keep his own in line with that veto pen. Yes he had a little too much bi-partisanship, but it was not the only component. Notice Obama was leading his party even during the primaries?

Whoever takes charge they had better realize just exactly how two faced and ruthless the Dems are.

Republicans need to learn there is a time for compromise and time not to!

Retired Geek writes "It is easier
to dig America out of a 10 foot hole than a 1000 foot hole."

You admit McCain would have taken us left. We have to have a party to move us to the right. As long as we keep voting for a party even when it moves left, they'll keep moving left.

If they turn around, it will be because of 3rd party votes, and those who stayed home - NOT because of you who supported McCain even though he is a liberal.

I'd rather be filling in a deep hole than continuing to dig down from a shallow hole. And I'd dispute your numbers - It's more like a 1000 foot hole with Obama, and a 900 foot hole with McCain. The differences in policies actually executed by those two would not have been that different.

The difference is that McCain's rejection will motivate the GOP to nominate a limited government conservative next time.

Geek asks "What is your reversal plan?"

Follow the Reagan's' pattern: promote limited government principles to the country in a way that appeals to independents. If we try to move to them (like McCain did), we lose. If we convince them to come to us (like Reagan did), we win with back-to-back landslides.

chris
"Look in the mirror, pal. You're the one who thought McCain could win by appealing to independents."

What in the heck are you talking about? As for independents or swing voters goober you cannot win without them. That is reality so deal with it.

"Which Dems? 1 or 2 are talking about it." You are an idiot! It is Obama, Pelosi, and Reid talking about...ya know the leadership???? Ya know the one's who set the agenda? Do you even know how Congress works?

"Bob Barr and Chuck Baldwin are conservatives, and they were both on my ballot. Rush was wrong."

These two change politcal ideology faster than Clinton. How little you know. Furthermore Rush is a self made gazillionaire...You? Thought not.

Have you ever worked closely on any campaign or been part of any strategy sessions? rush knows what you don't. UNITED FRONT!

Your another elitist that needs to go back to the fringe.

LoLo1 sayz:
Me I am starting with the elitists. Time for the Kathleen Parkers and Peggy Noonan's to go.

OK I don't see how any conservative could argue with that. We need to tell TH to please drop them.
But at this point and time I am not even sure TH is a conservative web site with the way they took on in this election go around.
Another thing is that the "blue elites" of the GOP may not be willing to loosen their grip and give the party back to the people. Your suggestion if that turns out to be the case? And I suspect it will be.

Oh and PS chris
Third party candidates were not even on the ballot in all fifty states so we would all be interested in knowing what your winning strategy and remedy for that little snafu would be.

You cannot get voted for if you ARE NOT ON THE BALLOT!!!!

chris
"Follow the Reagan's' pattern: promote limited government principles to the country in a way that appeals to independents."

Now you are just plain contradicting yourself!!!

McCain lost because of Bush. When your leader of your party has a 24% approval ratimg you are going to lose

Then please explain how more democrats got elected to both houses when congress has a 9% rating? 9 is a whole lot less than 24.

Call My Senator..that's a joke..right?
So, I should call Arlan Sphincter and tell him not to vote for Mitch McConnell? ha ha ha ha Yeah sure. I'll write him but the answer I get will be "McConnell did a fine job and no change is needed."

What I need is a list of which Republicans will be in the new Senate so I can write to all of them. Where can I find that list?

Doc.BitterOwnerClinger
"Another thing is that the "blue elites" of the GOP may not be willing to loosen their grip and give the party back to the people. Your suggestion if that turns out to be the case? And I suspect it will be."

Pave out the rope and let them hang themselves!

Be ready when they do.

There is a lot to be learned from the 'snatch and grab' the Dems did the last two elections.

The union vote issue will be ripe for the taking of votes. People are not going like being bullied and discriminated against because they disagree. Let the Dems vote it in. It will be their undoing with the working man.

We need an orator like Reagan...
...who will step up to the plate. I haven't heard from any inspiring Conservatives lately, someone who makes me get the "shiver up my leg" so to speak.

McCain, whom I voted for, didn't offer enough of a difference from Obama to bring on board the independents/undecided/Reagan-democrats. He was socialist-lite, just like GWB (thus, Obama was correct and saying it would probably be 4 more years of Bush).

We need to have a true Conservative who can speak to the people and hold to the true Conservative values of the rule of law, small government, individual freedom, traditional values and free market principles.

The question is, "Who?"

Suppose To Mean Something
It seems to me, to support a party means that you support what you think that party stands for. Today, I am not certain what the Republican Party stands for. So, maybe all of us should do some reflection about why we are republicans in the first place. And once we have done that, then determine if our leadership is supporting what we who call ourselves republicans support. And while we are at it, I would think we should reflect on what the ramifications are of the positions we support, because whether we like it or not, our positions either help the party to win elections, or hurt the party in winning elections. It seems to me, it is little comfort to say we are right, and then lose elections time and again. In the end, it does very little good to say you are right, and never have a chance to do what you think is right, because you are always in the minority.

One thing
I would like to ask all Conservatives.
When, not if, Congress starts talking about "change" to the constitution, how many of you are going to be out front of the building with me screaming like a group of codepinko banshees like they did in the Bush term?
Bible or Gun, I ain't giving up neither. Don't think so. You can't have them. Get over my rights, you can't have ANY of them PERIOD

here piggy
"Even worse, McConnell actually campaigned this year on bringing pork back to Kentucky."

You mean he's just like every other congressman. What's he going to say; "Vote for me and I'll make sure you don't get that new post office or widened highway." The people expect to get their share of the federal budget. That's why they reelected a convicted felon in Alaska.

In regards to the third party idea
There has never been a successful third party. Never. The Republican Party did not start as a third party. The total collapse of the Whig Party caused several small third parties and the remnants of the Whigs to unite under one new party that became the new second party in 1854 and 1856. Rush knows that. Until all of the third parties that have the same basic philosophy (American Independent, Constitution, Libertarian)can get over their little differences and their extreme positions that have caused most Americans to reject them (Total isolationism? Legalize drugs? Christians only?)They will never get anywhere. I will continue to fight for the Republican Party and try to wrestle it back from the big government, socialistic, big spenders. You can either get on board and help us do this or wait and hope for the party to shatter and maybe we can unite then. The Whigs were slowly disintigrating over a generation. Conservatives need to unite now and force our leaders to take notice of what we want. The Socialists are clearly at war with our ideas and want us to go the way of the dodo. Compromise only means the right giving in. They rarely compromise and when they do it's always them who gets the better end of the stick and us who gets it hung around our neck if it goes wrong. ie; the bailout bill. The MSM will NEVER like you. Stop trying. We will ALWAYS be displayed as rascist, homophobic, sexist haters until WE take control of our image. WE ARE AT WAR! With the left in all of it's dark little corners of this nation. Stick to conservative ideas and convey them clearly and accurately. Don't give in to the mean speak stay positive and we can take it back.

Lolo1, let's see a link where
Obama, Pelosi, or Reid have said they want to change the tax status of 401(k)s.

I know Pelosi was talking about windfall tax on 401(k)s a year ago, but Rush was talking about this recent plan to end the tax-deferred status of 401(k)s, and confiscate the balances so that they become a part of social security. Show me a link where the Dems have called for that.

http://www.cnbc.com/id/27558644

Lolo1: "Third party candidates were not even on the ballot in all fifty states."

Bob Barr was on every ballot except LA and CT, which both fraudulantly denied him ballot access:
http://www.reason.com/news/show/129852.html

Chuck Baldwin was on the ballot in 37 states including LA. That leaves CT as the only state that did not have a conservative on the ballot.

In response to my comment about "appealing to independents", Lolo1 wrote: "As for independents or swing voters goober you cannot win without them."

Yeah - I did not phrase that as well, and I also confused you with someone else. Sorry about that...

What I was trying to say is that the GOP wins NOT by becoming liberal for independents, but by convincing independents that our conservative ideas are best for the country.

I'm trying to figure this one out - you point out that I haven't made a gazillion bucks like Rush (sadly true...), then call me an elitist. How does that work?

Doc.BitterOwnerClinger
I will be with you!

A good place to start research
This is a good place to start your research for the leaders of the Republican Party, that is if you would like to return to Conservatism.

Mitch McConnell
Senator McConnell is not a bad guy, but he's the wrong guy to lead Senate Republicans. He's where he is because it's thought he can blend the wussies (Specter, Snow, etc.) and the toughs (DeMint,Inhofe, etc.) into a team that will play a game with Harry Reid and associates. This team will win a few and lose a lot. They will be the Oakland Raiders or the Kansas City Chiefs of today. If this keeps up, the Republican Party will become one of the minor minorities in the country. Better have another election among yourselves, Senate Republicans, and select one of the toughs for leader.

to matt, on 3rd parties
matt: "There has never been a successful third party. Never."

I'm not voting for a 3rd party so they'll win. I'm registering my protest - a countable way for the GOP to see how many people would have voted for a good GOP candidate, but rejected their socialist one.

I agree the 3rd parties all espouse some weird things. But at least they're trying to move back to constitutional governance - something that doesn't enter into McCain's thinking...

Matt: "I will continue to fight for the Republican Party and try to wrestle it back from the big government, socialistic, big spenders."

So, that's what I'm trying to do - in the loudest way possible, which is to withhold my vote from big-government, socialistic big spending candidates such as McCain.

(yes, I know McCain rightfully opposed pork, farm bills, and prescription drugs - but he supported NCLB and the bailout. He's a big spender.)

I think it would be easier to motivate the GOP to move back to the right, but if it shatters and a new large conservative party forms in its place, I'm fine with that too.

"Conservatives need to unite now and force our leaders to take notice of what we want."

What better way to get them to notice than by not acccepting the crap they're dishing out?

"The Socialists are clearly at war with our ideas and want us to go the way of the dodo."

I completely agree. But McCain is one of them - a socialist that hates conservatives. His deafening silence on his aides' slander of Palin proves that. This is the same guy that jumped all over anyone who said a bad word about Obama, even if it was true. Now he says nothing.

Voting for that guy just shows our acceptance to take anything the GOP dishes out.

If not McConnell then who?
I agree we need fresh faces in the leadership of the Senate but who.
Some of the best have retired, or was defeated.
Dick Lugar is an infomercial for Barack Obama, and may take a cabinet post under Obama.
There has to be some good young Conservative principled Republicans to take the reigns, and the old guard has got to step aside.
In the House it seems an orderly transfer of power is being orchestrated as we speak.
Lets hope that the old, understand the need of the party and helps to find new blood.

McConnell may not all be bad.
He did block some heavy Dem legislation. If he was a firm charismatic, conservative leader, he would have been able to block all Dem legislation and promote some good conservative legislation. Not all pork is bad. All communities want to see their fair share of federal dollars coming to their state. Roads and post offices are okay, but I don't see a need for observatories, museums, bird sanctuaries et al. Keep it to the entire public interest. There are people that live at the end of that bridge who thought it was a great idea. I would rather see a bridge built to a small community than money go to a Woodstock Museum or a radical nutjob school.

Matt
1) The GOP was in fact a third party and came to power when one of the two major parties imploded and the other fractured into sectional factions.

2) The role of third parties is not to win. Every major reform in the last 150 years has been brought forward by third parties. When issues that third parties support gain traction they are co-opted by the other major parties and the third parties are left with a few popular ideas and the lots of bad ideas and the people voted for the party that co-opted their good ideas instead of them. That is their role.

If the US had a parliamentary system and proportional representation minor parties could serve as "king makers" in coalition governments, but sadly the US has a presidential system and thus millions of people never have their views represented.

Actually, "survivingObama"

I HAVE listened to Limbaugh, and I stand my assessment that he's simply a party hack, because apparently just like YOU, he was willing to vote for a liberal with an "R" -- McLoser -- in spite of all his previous condemnation of McLoser. Which makes him a hypocrite and, yes, a hack.

As I wrote, he talks the talk, but doesn't walk the walk.

Say Enough's Enough's about Mitch
You guys are crazy! Senator McConnell is a master at procedural issues and how Congress functions. If Republicans replace him with a weaker minority leader, the Republicans are even more screwed. Just exactly do you have in mind? A rookie would get rolled and rolled and rolled. The smart thing to do would be to see how effective he is going to be in the first year of Obama's and the democrat controlled Congress. By jumping the gun, you guys may end up in worse shape. As far as McConnell and his pork to Kentucky, I can only say, it's about time. For years and years we've sent legitimate federal taxes to Washington, and have received a lot less than our proportionate share back. A lot of states have gotten excess monies in return. The democrats use "Appalachia" to beat us over the head saying they are "poring" money into it, but 50 years and $50 billion later the poor white boy and girl from Appalachia are still poor and now we have Obama's "hope for Appalachia. The only person that improved his lot in Appalachia was Sam Walton due to the spendable and guaranteed "welfare" payments. Oh, and now Obama by giving speeches about including the "poor whites" from Appalachia. (Kennedyesque don't you think?) I say leave Mitch alone.

Mitch
The real issue about Mitch is that the union leaders despise him and his wife - Elaine Chao - who is head of the Labor Department. Ms. Chao implemented much needed reform in dealing with union expenditure reports - transparency - as to just where the union dues' dollar is going and who it is going to. Now, after she had the courage to implement disclosures, the unions are out to get Mitch. With all situations, there's a hidden agenda of the Democrats and they are very successful at implementing it.

Republicans will rise again
The Republican party will get back to the conservative values, and we can get away from things like bashing our own. It's a shame what has been said about George Bush. Most of us have prospered during his time in office, even with during war. Obama became a millionaire during this time. What short memories we have. Hopefully, half the citizens in this country will come out of their daze as Obama makes a fool out of them. I'll keep my McCain/Palin buttons to wear during those "I told ya so" moments.

To Chris, AL
Believe me, I was no big fan of McCain and really had to hold my nose to vote for him. I didn't send a single penny or put a sign up for him. My vote for him was strictly an anti-Obama vote. McCain scared me but Obama scared me more. He still does. When McCain got the nomination I was so mad that I looked up all the third parties. I remember that I learned my lesson from Perot in '92. Conservatives voting third party pull votes away from the Republican candidate and end up with the Liberal candidate winning. My vote for Perot gave me 8 years of Clinton corruption. I was mad at Bush 1 for raising taxes. Clinton showed me what raising taxes is. My vote for Perot only seemed to register with Gingrich and he brought the party back into power 2 years later after Clinton overreached. Then look at what happened to Newt. After the revolution they killed off the revolutionaries and went right back to their happy little big government ways. I see your point that they may notice. They may not. The big government repubs have been in control of the party since the 30's. Goldwater, Reagan, and Gingrich were the exception to the rule, not the standard. They did make in roads for the true, though. I believe there are many true conservatives in the party now and we have an opportunity to wrest control from the Country Club Republicans. I think the answer is to get involved within the party and take it from within. Call your senators and congressmen, even if they are blue. They want to be re-elected, too. If enough people are downright harassing them, they will listen and turn right. I don't suppose I will change your mind. My sister feels as you do and I can't get her to change her mind either. I have a hell of a fight in front of me. Whorehouse Harry is up in 2010. I'll wish you luck if you will wish it for me.

This column hits and misses the mark
at the same time.

The solution to America's challenges is not going to be found in the GOP. This column simply starts the same old partisanship arguments that are destroying this nation. Barack Obama did not win because of a bi-partisanship argument either.

The American people are tired of partisanship and were looking for leadership, common sense, and most of all, competence in managing the family business, aka, the USA. Senator McCain wasn't able to convincingly offer that leadership, and the sheep, being stuck in the old lesser of two evils mindset, went with the new guy who promised "Hope & Change"!

The answer to the challenges we face will be found with new blood, with creative and innovative thinking, i.e., with independents not tied to the same old corrupt parties, PACs, and lobbyists. Preparation for 2010 & 2012 must begin with that approach. Going back to the GOP is not an answer as the column illustrates. The McConnels and all the other GOP elites are done. Putting any further energy into THEIR AGENDA is a waste of time and effort, not to mention money.

If you wish to restore Constitutional self government and reclaim the inheritance the elites have stolen from us, please send me an email - joe@joeolivaforpresident.org. I will keep you informed about a new organization of independents who are ready to break the hold on power by the two corrupt, elites parties and bring common sense and real leadership to our beloved nation. Send that email, I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, Joe

NO PRAYERS FOR OBAMA or HITLER
Obama is not a natural US born citizen and therefore got this election through trickery and coercion. He is not my president, only in name.

Obama used the name of Jesus Christ to try to get the Christians to vote for him and he used a photo op at the Holy Wailing Wall in Jerusalem to get the Jewish vote. For 20 years he attended a “church” where the pastor cursed and used God’s name in vain from the pulpit, to get the black vote. In my opinion, he might as well of used the “F” word in the “sanctuary,” which I’m sure he has anyway, just never got on tape. And it is very clear about how he and Obama feel about Israel and the Jews.

Am I to assume you’d also instruct the German Christians back in Hitler’s day to pray for the “wisdom and safety of Adolf Hitler? Brothers and sisters, it’s time to check yourselves on that one.

There are far more scriptures in complete contrast to praying for a monster like Obama. I don’t recall Jesus calling for prayer for Caesar, Herod, or even Judas for that matter. Peter did not pray for Ananias and Saphira who came to him with a lie on their lips; and the early Christians did not pray for Nero’s safety and wisdom. In fact, Jesus said He only prays for the ones that the Father has given him, those who’s names are in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

AND I DON’T RECALL JOHN THE BAPTIST PRAYING FOR HEROD: HE SAT OUTSIDE HEROD’S GATES AND DECLARED TO HIM AND THE WORLD THAT HEROD WAS IN VIOLATION OF GOD’S LAW AGAINST ADULTERY. AND HE GOT HIS HEAD CHOPPED OFF FOR IT.

Now we have a man Obama that supports infanticide, homosexual marriage, Islam (praying to the moon god, which YWH forbids), racially divided churches, and splitting the land of Israel, and he accepts worship and adoration as a deity: all of which is far greater sin than Herod marrying his brother’s wife.

No, we’d better pray for the courage to stand in the faith against such a monster.

Do as they did.
While I agree that we need to get rid of high spending democrat like republicans, we will need more power to get our message out. Since the libs are all saying that we are the wealthy party, why don't a few of the wealthiest get to gether and just buy those failing newspapers like the NY Times and maybe MSNBC. Buy them and then fire all the libs that work there, hire a few thousand conservatives. Then we could choose who we want to run for BOTH parties.

No More!
Now is the time "my friends" to decide if there is a GOP worth saving. We went from Republican revolution to Democrat-Lite in the blink of an eye. We need solid leadership based on conservative principles to emerge from the ranks. If it doesn't, the GOP is going to go the way of the Whigs and a new party will need to take up the sword of liberty.

To answer the question
Jon Kyle, of Arizona, is "tanned, rested, and ready." And he's a real conservative!!

Namesake Matthew, OH
Great name! You must be a great person! I will attempt to work within the party through 2010 and see what happens. If there is no change in how they behave then I'll be headed for Sweet Home Alabama to knock on that third party door. I have to stay with the Repubs for now because I don't believe we can hurt Harry "the war is lost" Reid without it. Akagi, you may be a better historian than I am. What election was it exactly that the Republicans shared a ticket with the Democrats and the Whigs?

No, maybe some internet papers though because I think newspapers will be gone before long.
Powerful servers unlike TH and it would work if you sold only enough adverting to pay for it.

The Nature of Our Opposition

Compromise is a fool's errand!!!

http://www.hostileopposition.blogspot.com

matt, definitely good luck!
Also, I should say that I'm not advocating complete 3rd party voting. My advice this time has been 3rd party for president, but make sure as many GOP senators as possible are returned - even if they aren't reliably conservative - because we'll need to be able to mount filibusters to stop Obama's worst initiatives.

I will also say that I would have voted for any of the original 10 GOP candidates other than McCain or Guiliani. I'm not looking for perfection - just generally conservative instincts.

My perspective is that a few years of Clinton was worth the GOP congress of the late 1990s. They did a good job fighting Clinton on everything, and we ended up with limited growth of government anyway, which is more than can be said of any other recent half-decade.

"...They may not. The big government repubs have been in control of the party since the 30's. Goldwater, Reagan, and Gingrich were the exception to the rule, not the standard."

Agreed. I sometimes say "The GOP needs to return to its limited government roots" but it's really not true - The GOP needs to return to its Reaganite days would be a better way to describe it.

As for 2010, if you can retire Dingy Harry, that would be awesome. We have Richard Shelby up for re-election here in AL. He was a conservative Dem who switched parties after the '94 sweep, and still has some Dem tendancies. So if there are primary challengers from the right, I will support the challenger. But with a Dem still in the whitehouse in 2010, I would definitely vote for Shelby - not a 3rd party.

Jeff Sessions or Jim DeMint
Either of these senators would be a good choice. It's time to have some new, more conservative blood in the leadership positions.

I agree with several other posters on Rush and Hannity. They're party first, conservatism second. Conservatives are getting really tired of their "but if you don't vote for liberal Republican X, you'll get the scary Democrat" argument. Lesser evil is still evil.

to MoniQue on prayer:
MoniQue, in 1Timothy 2 Paul wrote "I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty."

He wrote that when the empiror Nero was on the throne in Rome. Now, I know Obama is bad, but he's not as bad as Nero, who literally fed Christians to lions for public entertainment.

Also, Matthew 5 records the words of Jesus: "Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That you may be the children of your Father who is in heaven: for He makes His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

If you have committed to obey Christ, you need to obey this command as well.

Now, obviously if we receive a command from the government that opposes God's law (like if you're a doctor and are ordered to kill a person), we follow God's law. But we still pray for our leaders, even if they are evil.

My fellow conservatives, saying things like "Obama is not my president, only in name." is NOT a path to victory. Obama won fair and square. Hawaii validated his birth certificate last week. Even if it is a forgery, accept that nothing is going to be done about it and move on with substantive issues.

Plumber, you must be one of the few TH'ers who doesn't know that "Ranger29" (with other aliases including "Rattler29") is an alias for wobbie, who pretended to be a military officer and made lots of comments about military justice and regulations (of which he actually knows squat) and picked the aliases after being banned under his original "Robert".

wobbie is so dumb that he hasn't figured that TH's been onto him for sometime--evidenced by the speedy removal of his posts.

For BManIII--I think "Bueller" may be a reference by chris to the film "Ferris Bueller's day off".

For Max @ 00:36; true that 1964 and 1976 defeats pushed GOP back to basic conservatism--but in a "Judges" (reference is to the sixth Bible book) type of way: go conservative after defeat, then go complacent after getting victory which was due to going back to basic conservatism, repeat cycle (exactly as Israelites would turn to God when in trouble, then back to idolatry during prosperity).

mccain and mcconnell
two losers who stand only for their own ambition and forget the party.

Now that he lost mccain is letting his minions attack sarah as if she is at fault for mccain's fiasco at the polls.

But repubs should be thinking how bad mccain would have lost without palin on the ticket. It is odd that mccain won't defend his vp choixce but he frequently came to messiah's defense when others questions his associations with haters and terrorists.

But the country can now relax. mccain returns to the senate and puts his knee pads on once again tyo provide lip service to the dims.

The only difference now is that he won't be servicing old swimmer but has now transferred his affections the the messiah.

And still we are asking how did this loser, this rhino ever get the nod. Perhaps the party will learn that running a dim lite won't win elections. It pleases the left but mccain only stabbed the party in the back and now is blaming others for his own failures to run a campaign

svpallava on "Bueller"
BManIII, sorry about that - I missed your post #4. svpallava is correct, I was referring to the Ben Stein line in the film "Ferris Bueller's day off".

Also, I do know how to spell "emperor". Really.

Do we throw everybody under the bus?
Mitch McConnell is a mixed-bag. So is everyone else. There is no one who matches your definition of what a conservative all of the time! I think on balance, it is much to have someone with his experience and ability to block Democratic legistation, then some wet-behind-the-ears ideologue who will eventually disapoint.
It's nice for us to say that we will not compromise. But we aren't in politics. Politics is all about compromises. Reagan knew this; and so does McConnell. Those who don't compromise simply do not have the ability to stay in Congress. The goal is to have them compromise more. We need to be patient, and realise that change occurs very slowly. Tough. That's just the way it is.

Yep - he wants Ted Stevens back, too
I guess the GOP is against felons voting - unless they are in the Senate?

What's up with that?

Are we now the official party of corruption? Is that it? Did I miss a memo?

This man knows!

WHEN TO COMPROMISE?

.....LOLO 1 ....You wrote ...

....."Republicans need to learn there is a time for compromise and time not to!" ...

.....Aha! and therin lies the rub ...

.....How do you compromise with "Right to Life" and a President and Party that supports abortion in any trimester right up until the moment of birth? ...

.....Core principles cannot be compromised without lowering standards ...and I think we have been lowering standards for far too long .....COLOSSUS

BAREFOOTCONSERVATIVE

.....Designating blacks as 3/5ths of a person came about as the result of a compromise on how many Representatives each State could have ...

.....That one worked out well didn't it ...all it did was postpone the inevitable war .....COLOSSUS

Third Parties, Etc.
I joined the Libertarian Party in 1992 when GHW Bush changed from "pro-choice" to "pro-life." Many assert that Bush Sr. lost because of his failure to stick to his "no new taxes" pledge, but I doubt he'd have made such a pledge had he known he'd soon be prosecuting a war that he'd have to get the dems in congress to agree to pay for. When he ran for reelection in '92 and bent to the religious right, he did not appear to have his heart in the race and seemed to welcome handing the office off to Clinton. Now that the two are fast friends, I can't help but wonder if the fix wasn't in from the very start. I see it rolling out this way: Bush appeals to the religious right; Perot appeals to the fiscal conservatives; Clinton wins.

I share the desire with conservatives to get our fiscal house in order, but I am repelled by the desire of social conservatives impose their moral values on the rest of us. I am sure I am not alone, and I know many people who have gone over to the Dems instead of the LP for that same reason.

So, if the GOP really wants to build a consensus, I recommend it stick to matters financial and let the social conservatives battle it out at the state and local level.

I will add that since becoming a card-carrying Libertarian, I have come to believe that trying to prevent and prosecute victimless crimes, including recreational drug use and prostitution, is a waste of our precious resources. Just like trying to buy our way out of poverty with more entitlement spending, we are wasting tax dollars and manpower that would be better allocated elsewhere, preferable in private enterprise.

Galltegfa, I completely agree with
you that the GOP should "stick to matters financial and let the social conservatives battle it out at the state and local level."

For that to happen on the matter of abortion, Roe-v-Wade would have to be overturned. What's your position on that?

Drugs is a similar issue - if California wants to legalize the growth and consumption of weed, the federal government does not have the constitutional power to stop them - but like in so many other areas, the feds have vastly overreached their constitutional bounds.

another question for Galltegfa:
Ronald Reagan was the most libertarian president since Coolidge in 1928.

Would you vote for him today, even though he was a pro-life drug-warrior?

Republican ideology
While attending college in the late 80's and early 90's, I railed against Political Correctness believing that it amounted to a dumbing down of the students to come. I was a conservative on a very liberal campus. I was for pro Bush 41, a reservist and believed in our actions in Panama, Iraq and then Somalia. But when the social conservatives came along and tried to tell me that I was living wrongly, the republicans lost me.

A true conservative focuses on the constitution and the rule of law. They believe in a man's right to live his life free from the oppression of others as long as he does not break the law. Abortion and being homosexual was not against the law (I am neither an abortionist nor am I gay)in my state. But yet so called conservatives demanded they become so. And it dawned on me that these people were NOT conservatives. They were and still are tyrrants wanna be dictators who wish all people submit to them.

A conservative should not care what two consenting adults do in their bedroom as long as it is legal. A conservative can believe that it is wrong based on a religious belief but should not try to impose that religious belief on others. Same with the abortion issue. It is between God those people. I am humble enough I do not want God to be mad at me for interfering in his plan for them.

As soon as real conservatives step up, reclaim true conservative ideals, and let God take care of what God undoubtedly will, we will all be great again.

Throw the bums out
The biggest mistake this country ever made was the passage of the 17th amendment to the Constitution. If we could repeal that thing than every time a state gets a new Governor there would be a house cleaning in Washington and we wouldn't have this big over inflated Government with these losers, on both sides of the isles hanging on just pandering for votes. I say get rid of the 17th Amendment and throw the bums out! At least impose term limits.
http://www.termlimits.org get your free bumper sticker

More Later
Tombo

stripedshirt, abortion is not a "between
them and God issue" like immoral sex.

I believe any sex outside heterosexual marriage is wrong, but I would not have government make it illegal. That is between them and God, and their promiscuous behavior is harming no one but themselves. It's none of my (or the state's) business.

But the state's primary function is to prevent people from harming each other without consent. Abortion is the harming of an unborn child who should be protected by the state.

But, like I said before, according to the constitution it should be a state issue, not a federal one. Roe-v-Wade should be overturned, then people such as you and I could debate the issue of personhood in state legislatures.

Replace McConnell with...
You can't replace somebody with nobody. So I would think it behooves John Hawkins to suggest a replacement, other than "anybody but McCain" (or Lindsay Graham or another "moderate").

It is constructive to rally round a new leader, but a lynch mob only makes things worse.

McConnell Out?
This past election could turn out to be a blessing if it enables Republicans to get serious about getting rid of what I call, "bra and panty" Republicans. The point is not to get hung up on words and terms such as "liberal" and "Democrat" to name a few. The real key is where the candidate or official stands on issues.
Incidentally Senator Coburn would be a good choice in the Senate and Rep. Paul in the House for leadership.

One thing missing
from this column which has been missing from the GOP for several years. When I was serving in the military, I was taught that not only should I evaluate the problem but I should also evaluate several solutions to said problem.

Who are the most conservative Republicans left in the Senate and House. Then we can evaluate and push for a better candidate to lead the opposition. One who will stand up and passionately tell the American people what is happening like the Amnesty bill attempt last time.

Either find a true conservative leader or perhaps conservatives should make a party within or without the GOP for conservatives similar to that suggested by Crawfish:

Mitch McConnell
I could not agree with you more in regard to Mitch McConnell. But calling my Senator is useless. He is a RINO who consistently "reaches out and crosses the aisle".

The Republicans will continue to lose as long as they stray from fiscal conservativism.

Do you guys understand anything about
government at all?

Dems blocked reform, just like reps have been blocking Dems on certain issues the last two years. Why in the heck do you think the Dems want 60 seats???? Btw Reps never had 60 seats!

I wouldn't compromise on that issue either but it is not the only issue. If Evangelicals did the job that God tasked them with it wouldn't be an issue at all.

Chris and BrianR, part one
Interesting exchange, but you guys are both wrong on a number of levels.

Rush, like many of us, held his nose and supported McCain because that was our only real choice, once the disastrous primaries were over, and McCain was the nominee.

Voting for Barr or Baldwin was a waste of energy, and that's why Rush said that conservatism wasn't on the ballot. Third party candidates run every four years, and they are always irrelevant. No one cares if they get 1%, or 1 1/2%. The only time it really mattered was when Perot ran, and he ruined the GOP's chances that year by getting 19% of the vote. By the way, where is Perot these days? Answer - who cares? The same is true of every third party candidate. They are, at best, trivia questions.

Pull the Thumb Out, Little Jack Horner!

Little Jack Horner sat in the corner
Apparently eating humble pie
He stuck in his thumb and pulled out nothing
And said "What a good boy am I!"

Very nice Jack, but while you are sitting in the corner, hoping that someone will notice what a nice boy you are, the mean little boys pulled the rug out from under you and are running off with the election!

When are these Republicans going to learn that the Lefties don't play nice and are not impressed when you do!

So if all you conservatives out there who are admonishing all the rest of us to be a bunch of good sports would please pull the thumb out!

It is time to wake up and smell the pie!

George W. Bush acted like a pure gentleman from the first day of his presidency, and all the Lefties did was deceitfully drag down his character, and then try to tag the rest of us with their nasty nattering!

Will somebody please tell little Jack that the "good boy am I" act is only going to get you a pie in the face!

Chris and BrianR, part two
As to what Rush said and Chris' assertion that the GOP "did nothing" for six years, that is not true. Bush and the GOP attempted several conservative pieces of legislation, particularly regarding the housing/lending debacle, and Democrats and a couple RINO's helped to kill those attempts. So it's patently wrong to say they did nothing. They tried. Sure, they didn't try hard enough, and Bush failed to articulate and promote conservatism the way he should have. But he kept us safe after 9-11, gave us tax cuts which spurred the economy, etc.... And he promoted a culture of life and a commitment to marriage. He deserves credit for those things. When it's all said and done, he'll get credit for winning the war, too.

As to the comment about Russia, you're being naive, Chris. Russia may have done the same thing even if McCain had won, but the difference is that McCain would've actually tried to do something about it. Obama won't.

You guys have got to stop imagining a perfect candidate with a perfect record and a perfect candidacy. Such things do not exist.

The main thing is to begin purging the party of the proabortion, progay, big spending, go along to get along types. And that must be done on a state by state basis. It may take another Newt to do that, by nationalizing elections again. But it can be done.

Rush and Hannity didn't sell out. They are just as conservative as anyone, and without Rush in particular, we would STILL be in the political wilderness, since he made conservatives aware of the fact that we are in the majority in this country.

The sad part is that we don't act like it, as witnessed by the cheap attempts at character assassination of Sarah Palin, from within the party! If anyone is our hope for 2012, it's her, Jindal notwithstanding.

Lolo1,
not sure why annfan copied my earlier post...

I'm well aware that the Dems blocked reform - thus "Dems are partially culpable for the current economic crisis".

I think the GOP topped out at 55 seats.

The GOP is also partially at fault for the current economy for several reasons:

#1 - they spent too much money, running up the debt, which has various ill effects on the economy.

#2 - they didn't get anything done on domestic energy production. They could have, if not for resistance from the RINOs such as McCain - there were enough vulnerable red-state Dem senators to avoid a filibuster and get domestic drilling done in 2005. The same is probably true of social security reform.

#3 - Yes, some Republicans such as McCain tried to get freddie and fannie reformed in 2005. I don't think they tried very hard. Got to get along with the other side, you know - "new tone" and all that.

#4 - The GOP willingly participated in meddling with the markets, which always ends badly.

I'm sure there's lots of other reasons.

Now, I definitely agree that the Dems are more to blame than the GOP - especially when you include socialists like FDR (soc sec), LBJ (welfare, medicare), Carter (CRA), and Clinton (CRA with more teeth).

And I definitely give the GOP credit for lowering taxes which helped give us a good run until this year (but not McCain, who voted against the cuts).

But to claim that the current mess is entirely due to the Dems is absurd.

And Rush was blaming this crisis on Obama specifically ("Obama Recession"). "Obama Crash" I can see, when referring to the drop that started on Nov 5 - but he isn't personally much responsible for the recession we are probably in.

I just hope that when Obama screws things up even more than they are now that Americans are smart enough to figure that out. I have serious doubts about that.

to anyone espousing the idea...
..that voters stayed home this year, please read Medved's blog, entitled "Did six million voters really stay home?"

annfan - sorry, should have refreshed
before posting...

Couple of comments -

3rd party votes are not to win, they are to make the GOP realize how many votes they could have had if they had run someone good. In 1992, Bush lost because he alienated his base, not because of Perot. He got 10 million less votes in 1992. If he had governed as the Reaganite he campaigned as in 1988, he could have kept those votes.

The GOP learned from Bush 41's mistake and we got the 1994 revolution, which - while they somewhat folded after the government shutdown - did limit the growth of government better than anyone else had for a long time.

On doing nothing, I agree - keeping us safe, lowering taxes, and Roberts & Alito were much appreciated achievements from Bush. I just wish W had hammered the Dems on the other stuff instead of playing nice.

On Russia, what do you think McCain could have done about it? What is Bush doing about it?

I'm with you on purging the party of RINOs - starting by not voting for El Senior RINO himself - John McCain. I would have voted for any of the GOP field other than him & Guiliani.

Again, on Rush, I still like listening to him, and appreciate the great things he's done for conservatism. I just think he's wrong on this issue, and the contorted statements he made this week show that he is uncomfortable with his own position.

I'm with you on Jindal & Palin - I hope to vote for one or the other in 2012.

Especially not
the RINO liberal Specter, who should have retired and supported the conservative who wanted to replace him. Unfortunately, GWB supported the RINO liberal who stabbed him in the back more often than not because he was the GOP incumbent.

We have to get rid of all the blue-blood, country-club, elites, and replace them with authentic conservatives.

Obama Will Pass a F.A.R.T. on America

The stench from the Barack Obama F.A.R.T. will stifle the economy and wreak havoc on those who are productive citizens.

Barack Obama's F.A.R.T. will be known historically as the 'F.A.R.T. that Changed America and the world' for many years if not forever.

The Barack Obama F.A.R.T. will cause a pall to hang over cities and will result in more citizens moving to the suburbs.

American Citizens will begin to realize that they should have never elected Barack Obama because of the F.A.R.T.

Barack Obama will increase the amounts of the F.A.R.T. until there is no way to escape the hideousness of the F.A.R.T.

Barack Obama's Fairness And Redistribution Tax coming to America.

Wanna know?
It's fascinating to read the elaborate rationalizations for Tuesday: Bush, McConnell, McCain, whoever ... is no true conservative; Republicans abandoned their core values; Democrats sabotaged the economy, the war ..., the media betrayed you ... whatever.
Here's a helpful suggestion, which I tender in the secure knowledge that no one on the right will heed it.
Face the facts. Stop searching for face-saving or self-flattering fictions. Republicans lost across the board. It wasn't just McCain or any Congressman or Senator. You, your party, your medieval beliefs have been repudiated. For the 2nd time. It's no fluke.
The current shambles - economic, political, military, social - resulted from conservative ideology & policy. You controlled the White House for most of 30 years, Congress nearly as long. For the past 6/ 7 years you controlled both. You got your tax cuts, your wars, your "unitary executive", your endless borrowing & spending. The result has been disaster.
My advice: own the problems & your mistakes -the real ones, not the ones that make you feel better. Confront the flaws in your ideology. Most important, recognize that you now live in a moderate-liberal society. Forget the BS from Rush et al. Look at issue based polls, listen to the young people who'll define the future - they're liberal!
In other words, rethink your view of the world. Or ...
... continue deluding yourselves. And losing!

Chuck Baldwin Said It Best...
"And since it is unlikely that the Republican Party has enough sense to understand any of this and will, therefore, do little to reestablish genuine conservative principles, it is probably best to just go ahead and bury the scoundrels now and move on to something else. Without a sincere commitment to constitutional government, the GOP has no justifiable reason to ever govern again. Therefore, put a fork in them. They are done. Let a new entity arise from the ashes: one that will stand for something more than just "the lesser of two evils." As we say in the South, That dog just won’t hunt anymore." --- Chuck Baldwin, Constitution Party candidate, the only true Conservative running on November 4th.

Senators Who Voted No to Socialism
Here's the quick list of the Senators who voted NO on bailout/economic rescue. There were only 14 in the GOP, 9 Dems, and one Independent, Sanders of Vermont. Any new leader should come from this list sans Liddy Dole who lost her seat. My preferences are DeMint, Sessions, or Shelby with my favorite being DeMint.

Allard (R)
Barasso (R)
Brownback (R)
Bunning (R)
Cantwell (D)
Cochran (R)
Crapo (R)
DeMint (R)
Dole (R)
Dorgan (D)
Enzi (R)
Feingold (D)
Inhofe (R)
Johnson (D)
Landrieu (D)
Nelson (FL) (D)
Roberts (R)
Sanders (I)
Sessions (R)
Shelby (R)
Stabenow (D)
Tester (D)
Vitter (R)
Wicker (R)
Wyden (D)

now THAT is ironic - Sanders, of the
socialist party of Vermont, voted against the socialist bailout.

Sessions would be a good choice - but can be a big spender at times. He supported the farm bill, among other things. But he was out in front against amnesty and against the bailout.

I thought Shelby was something of a RINO - he was a democrat until after the 1994 sweep, when he switched to the GOP. TBTG - is there something about Shelby that you particularly like?

Here's the House Bailout Vote
http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2008/roll681.xml

I was so surprised to see Tom Tancredo of all people voted FOR the Socialist bailout and Dennis Kucinich voted AGAINST the bailout. What does that tell you about the 2 parties?

John, Clinton Opened The Borders!
Why is everyone blaming the Republican party when it is the fault of both parties, but it started way back when with Bush Sr. pushing for the New World Order and then in the 90s, Clinton pushed for the New World Order which today is called globalization. Some are pushing for American to open its borders to Mexico and Canada and get rid of the U.S. and the constitution and push for the North American Union and chip everyone so we're all a bunch of robotoids walking around controlled by a computer - anyway, sounds like a fictional horror movie - but why aren't the borders closed? Why are Americans tracked like criminals while illegals can walk across and why do they want to give them valid identifications? Clinton's administration opened the borders and outsourced our jobs and diminished our Military Defense and it was the democratic Congress who refused to investigate Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and under their control - the money remains a mystery - and no one got punished except the American people! It's a very big bed in the Lincoln bedroom if you recall and that's why people say - they're all in bed together!

New leaders, both houses
The message should be clearly sent to the voters. A clean sweep and a new beginning.

If I still had a republican senator, I'd write to him.

Cases in point ...
Rose sees a mysterious conspiracy to "get rid of the U.S. & the constitution & push for the North American Union & chip everyone so we're all a bunch of robotoids…"

Chris thinks that "some Republicans such as McCain tried to get freddie and fannie reformed in 2005" but that "the GOP willingly participated in meddling with the markets, which always ends badly."

annfan buys Limbaugh's assertion that conservatives are in the majority.

Lunacy, historical revisionism & wishful thinking in that order.

It’s the kind of casual stupidity I described in my previous post & it's destroying conservatism in the U.S. That would be a shame. A rational, informed conservative philosophy could play a useful role in our national dialogue; but Buckley's dead & hucksters promoting ignorance & cant are busily eroding his legacy.

Rose may be permanently off the deep end, but Chris & annfan might pose credible arguments, if they practiced some elementary fact checking & stopped basing their opinions on the pronouncements of braying jackasses like Coulter, Hannity & Limbaugh.

I’ll help you get started, Chris. Want to understand the financial meltdown? Forget the right wing talking points.

McConnell, Pelosi, Reid... all three must be evicted from the congress. Now that's "Enough's Enough."

FULL CIVIL RIGHTS IS NOT A REALITY, YET

But as the homophobic votes attest, it is only a matter of actuarial time: the geezers are the most bigoted, and will soon be gone.

We fully expect, for instance, that the Armed Forces will be integrated and that federal support for all our gay and lesbian children will be fully realized.

Part of the reason for huge Republican losses can be traced to a fuller universal understanding that the Republican brand, such as it is, can be inextricably be tied to bigotry, hatred, denial of civil rights, and intolerance.

Keep it up. How you like us now?

So thoughtful of you to take time to break away from the bong to tell us where we went wrong. Thanks for the blather. Wanna know? Now I'm convinced we need a return to our core values and diss anyone gone RINO.

Wayne
I'm no RINO, hot shot, I'm a dyed in the wool liberal; and you're a prime example of the kind of self-satisfied right wing loser who's going to sink conservatism even deeper.
Did you notice that you and your "core values" got thumped for the second time in a row? And the demographic in which you did worst this time was the 18-32 year olds. Great future in store for you! So keep shovelling the same old sh*t; it's a great place to bury you.

Leadership?
The Republicans in congress has had no real leadership since Newt left, and he mostly talked a good game. They are nothings and accomplished nothing. As soon as they took charge they dived into the pork laden lifestyles of dumb and dumber. Nothing but a bunch of Democrap lites. Afraid to speak the truth because they didn't want the MSM to call them names. Must be the nature of the beast (Washington).

Tar and feather the rat . . .
He and Bush should go out together. They've both sold the GOP down the road for personal gain.

It is bailout time, bigtime....
for everybody but the taxpayer, the people out here who are expected to just keep on going to work, paying their bills, paying their taxes. We are paying for the screwups in Congress who demanded banks make risky loans, for the fat cats on Wall St that thought it could never end, for car makers who have been dragging their feet for years on making cars more efficient.

Evidently Congress and the new Prez think that there really is a golden goose out here that will just keep them in more and more golden eggs without ever feeling a bit frazzled.

I am beginning to feel like a dope for continuing to do whatever it takes to keep my family afloat while every Tom, Dick and Harry has their hand out to the Nanny State.

Render unto Caesar whatever Caesar says is his seems to be the soup of the day.

Open up your eyes, stop the brainwashing
If we vote down any Republican, we will for sure loose all of our rights as we know it, with an all Democratic congress. Everyday more and more information is hitting the net, showing it was the Democrates that got us in this economical mess, ontop are out to distroy everything our founding fathers and many others fought and loss their lives in preserving the freedoms that we enjoyed, until a majority democratic congress were elected and are out to distroy this country of the freedoms we bleed for, since america first began

I can't believe how nieve this nation ha
I can't believe how nieve this nation has became! Wake up dem & independents.....or are your minds so bias and narrow to other parties that you were willing to destroy your own self interest and beliefs? I fear in the 4 yrs to come, you will be eating your words and wished you had opened your eyes and ears. That is, unless you are one of the many out there, that truely need someone to tell you how to live your lives and spend your money!! I am very surprized at the youth today, as I thought many of you have fought against having your parents and the government telling you how to live your lives. But, then of course I forgot that you only believe in handouts over making a true living. What are you going to do when all of us hard working middle class die off? If you say the government you will be surprized to know, the working class is who supply the government coffers!!!

Senator McConnell
Grow the hell up. You sound like one of my kids when they don't get everything they want.

Don't let the perfect (which can't be obtained) be the enemy of the good. McConnell isn't just good. He's the best we have. He's a real conservative and a real patriot.

If you think that Senator McConnell likes all the things he doesn't work to stop, you're wrong. He is playing a bad hand. Just try to stop the majority when you have nothing but experience and cunning - it's hard.
He picks his battles, because he knows he can't win them all.

Say it ain't so!
Well geez, there I sat at home in Seattle on election night thinking, "Kentucky's voting sanely; I could live in Kentucky. Mitch McConnell's there, and they've voted him in for years." Bummer. Guess I'll have to stay here and try to inject reason into the Evergreen State.
