Gun and Ammo Sales are Shooting Through the Roof (I Wonder Why?)

Will Congress pass Obamacare by the end of the year?

My tribe and I went wild boar hunting this weekend with my buddy’s bunch near Lake Okeechobee, Florida. As God would have it, we killed four nice pigs, had a redneck great time, and now have pork chops aplenty to feast upon. No need for government cheese, food stamps or a bailout here, ladies and gents.

For those of you who read my columns and listen to my talk show, clashradio.com, you know that the aforementioned is pretty standard Doug fare, i.e. God, Guns and Gumption. I am the bitter guy who clings to his God and guns and is proud of it. How you doin’?

The thing that made this past weekend unique was when mi amigo’s esposa went out Wednesday evening to get ammo for their son’s gun at a huge outdoor store in Fort Lauderdale and found the shelves more empty than an O’Reilly book signing at a NOW luncheon. No cartridges, folks! This was weird because Fort Lauderdale ain’t exactly Texas.

Wondering what the heck was going on, they proceeded over to the gun counter to ask the clerk what the dillio was, and lo and behold the gun racks were nekked! Freak out number two.

Yep, by the end of the business day the guns were gone. The rifles, shotguns, and pistols were . . . lock stock and two smoking barrels . . . pretty much history. For those with short-term memory loss, this was not a small shop with a couple of Ruger .22s and a few boxes of CCI 40 grain hollow points but a national retail chain with a stonkin’ firearm stockade.

Now, I’ve been an outdoor shop devotee for the last forty-one of my forty-six years and have never heard of that kind of mass movement of guns and ammo by civilians. After a little googling around the ‘net, I found out that this isn’t just a localized event unique to this one outdoor superstore but a national and online phenomenon, as well.

This 411 has made me an amalgam of glad, mad, and a little freaked out. I’m glad that business is booming for those patriots in the firearms industry and that they are not in need of a bailout; I’m mad because it makes it a pain in the butt to get ammo; I’m freaked out because in nearly half a century of kicking dirt on this earth I have never heard of anything like this happening (except, of course, during the American Revolution, which is kinda interesting).

I guess the election of the socialist Obama and his anti-gun, anti-self defense cabal was all the stimulus package traditional Americans needed to appreciate time-honored American privileges—in particular the right to keep and bear arms.

Grasshoppers put their money into clothes, automobiles, electronic gadgets, plasma tvs and eating out.
Ants put their money into Real estate, diamonds and gold, and firearms.

Some kind posters have advised me that in 2012 or 2016 i'll be sitting with my gun collection with nothing to do. My experience is that i'll be considering whether i should sell them at 3 or 4 times what i paid for them, or wait until they increase in value a little more.

Try selling your plasma wall hanger for whqat you paid for it.

45Caliber, Justine, and others
I served US Army 1953, 1961. I shot expert with the .30/06 M1 Garand and full-auto M2 carbine. In 1962 i won my m1 carbine in a poker game. Its a parts gun, with mismatched components, probably built by an armorer somewhere. Very early push safety, but M2 bolt and magazine latch. It came with 1000 rounds of mil ammo in stripper clips, most ot which i have shot. Somewhere i picked up a DCM Garand and a bunch of ammo in clips, but i've never had occasion to even sight it in. I bought it from a competition shooter, i assume its sighted in for him and reasonably close for me.

I am aware of the piston conversions available. Before i bought myOllie Arms .25, i looked at a Sig for the same price. The Sig was piston original and also had the operating handle on the bolt, which i much prefer to the AR non-reciprocating style. I went with the Ollie because i like weird calibers, and the accuracy guarantee. Long ago I bought a Costa Mesa AR-180 which also has a piston, on-bolt op handle and left swing stock. Stoner designed it to cure the faults of the AR-15. But Colt had the clout and sold the AR to the Army. They'd have been better served with the improved 180. A few months ago Armalite was still advertising an upgraded 180 with a fixed stock, but again it didn't seem to get much of a reception. My next purchase will probably be a Bushmaster, either a .450 Thumper or the super light model based on some light weight composite which is giving me a senior memory moment.
