With unemployment at 10.2%, what will happen by the end of Obama's first term?

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney painted his chief GOP rival John McCain as a “Washington insider” in a conference call Friday morning.

Romney said McCain is a “quintessential Washington insider, a man who has been there 25 years, knows all the lobbyists, knows all the Democrats all the Republican, knows who owes who, has favors to repay and scores to settle.”

Romney recognized that endorsements from Florida Governor Charlie Crist and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for McCain was giving the Arizona senator a boost, but touted his own conservative media endorsements.

“When Sean Hannity says he’s voting for me and when Laura Ingraham says she’s endorsing me, you have people who are saying things that are pretty powerful.” He also mentioned National Review’s endorsement.

“These people have nothing to gain from endorsing me,” Romney said “They don’t get anything by making an endorsement, they make an endorsement because it means something.” On the other hand, according to Romney, “when politicians endorse, some are in the same category…other politicians that endorse are looking for something back. They get with whoever they think is going to win.”

Then Romney chuckled. “I have to tell you a good story,” he said. “I was talking to one governor and I was asking for his endorsement and this was a while back and he said ‘well, you know I am going to wait until the end and I am going to see who is ahead and that is who I am going to endorse.’ So you have different reasons when you are politicians.”

Romney did not name this governor, but his son Matt taped himself before the Michigan primary making a prank phone call allegedly from Schwarzenegger.

In the video Matt tells viewers that “maybe he [Mitt] thinks he’s going to get an endorsement.”

Republican Politicians Re John McCain

TODD at 10:13 AM, in response to my 9:15 am post, writes: "Unlike you libs, we Republicans do not, for the most part, make our character judgments of a candidate based upon the opinions of columnists."

How about the opinions of John McCain's fellow Republican politicians, quoted in Amanda Carpenter's April 1, 2008 column, "McCain Admits Temper Problem". Carpenter wrote:

"Rumors of McCain’s uncontrollable temper, substantiated by his Republican Senate colleagues, dogged him during the Republican primaries," and cited these instances:

"Republican Sen. THAD COCHRAN (Miss.)., a Romney supporter, told the Boston Globe the thought of a 'HOT-HEADED' PRESIDENT MCCAIN 'SENDS A COLD CHILL DOWN MY SPINE.'"

"Former Sen. RICK SANTORUM (R.-Pa.), another Romney supporter, also made recorded robo-calls on behalf of the Romney campaign in which he said, 'As a conservative I don’t agree with McCain on many issues and I don’t think he has the temperament and leadership ability to move the country in the right direction.'”

"Concerns about McCain’s temper persisted before the Republican primaries, though," Carpenter wrote, adding:

"McCain reportedly told Texas Sen. JOHN CORNYN (R.) 'f--- you' in a private meeting at the height of the Senate’s debate over comprehensive immigration reform last year.

"News outlets have published other stories that stated McCain said 'Only a a------ would put together a budget like this,' to former Senate Budget Chairman PETE DOMENICI (R.-N.M.) and “I’m calling you a f------ jerk!” to Sen. CHARLES GRASSLEY (R.-Iowa.)."

And in her Feb. 1, 2008 column, Amanda Carpenter wrote: "(MITT) ROMNEY said McCain is a 'QUINTESSENTIAL WASHINGTON INSIDER, a man who has been there 25 years, knows all the lobbyists, knows all the Democrats, all the Republican, knows who owes who, has favors to repay and scores to settle.'”

Real world experience DOES matter
A long time ago, George McGovern ran for Pres. He was an untra-liberal by his own admission (and proud of it).

After he got out of politics, he decided to open up a bread and breakfast in New England.

Well, it went out of business after just a couple of years, and was quoted to say . .

“. . . running a business “gives you a whole new perspective on what other people worry about.” As Fulford writes: “He now saw for the first time that public policy was choking entrepreneurs by entangling them in impossible red tape and a multitude of laws designed to protect employees, save the environment, keep the customers safe, and raise school taxes. He realized that the politicians who wrote those laws had no idea that they might make it impossible for some businesses to function. He confessed that if he had been in business before politics, he would have handled such matters with more care.” McGovern even went as far as to express the (liberal) heresy that there was truth in Calvin Coolidge’s dictum: “the business of America is business.”

Mitt is more like us, in that he had to get up and go to work every day to earn money. He was well educated and ‘wiket smat” (as they say up in MA), and after many years, made millions. But he worked real hard and earned it in the real world.

That experience is something that ever other candidate lacks.
