BREAKING: Trump Signs Asylum Agreement With Guatemala

Associated Press

President Donald J. Trump announced Friday afternoon that the United States and Guatemala have agreed upon a safe third-country-asylum agreement, according to the Associated Press.

via The AP:

The so-called “safe third country” agreement would require migrants, including Salvadorans and Hondurans, who cross into Guatemala on their way to the U.S. to apply for protections in Guatemala instead of at the U.S. border. It could potentially ease the crush of migrants overwhelming the U.S. immigration system and hand Trump a concession he could herald as a win as he struggles to live up to his campaign promises on immigration.

“This is a very big day,” Trump told reporters. “We have long been working with Guatemala and now we can do it the right way."

"This landmark agreement will put the coyotes and smugglers out of business," he added.

White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham tweeted, "@realDonaldTrumpkeeps working hard for this country - the U.S. just signed a “Safe Third Agreement” w Guatemala to help secure our border. As the President works hard to solve the crisis on the southern border, I sure hope the dems enjoy their vacations!"
