On this day in 1783, the Treaty of Paris was signed by American representatives John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and John Jay, and British Parliament member David Hartley who represented the royal monarch, King George III. The treaty officially ended the American Revolutionary War, declaring "in the name of the most holy and undivided Trinity," America's thirteen colonies were to be free, sovereign and independent States.
