Democratic Senator on GOP Rep's Duel Comment: I Have My Pistols Loaded

Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-TX) is very frustrated with his Republican Senate colleagues about the GOP heath care push on the Hill, specifically with those who have promised one thing and are doing another regarding repeal and replace of Obamacare. During an interview with a local radio station in Corpus Christi, Texas, the congressman said, “the fact that the Senate does not have the courage to do some of the things that every Republican in the Senate promised to do is just absolutely repugnant to me.”

He later blamed female senators from the Northeast, saying “some of the people that are opposed to this, they’re some female senators from the Northeast. If it was a guy from south Texas, I might ask him to step outside and settle this Aaron Burr style.”

So, we have a GOP congressman blaming women and then saying he would challenge opponents to a duel if they disagreed with him. You can see how the Left would have a field day with this, but Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), whose Republican colleague Sen. Shelley Moore Capito told CNN’s Alisyn Camerota on Tuesday that he would step outside with him. The Free Beacon clipped Manchin’s remarks:

After CNN's "New Day" host Alisyn Camerota played the clip of Farenthold's remarks, she asked Manchin if it was indeed the fault of female senators. Among the Republicans who have expressed worry about repealing Obamacare without a firm replacement is Manchin's colleague, Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R., W. Va.).

"I'd be OK to step outside with him, if he wants to take all my people in West Virginia and throw them out in the cold," Manchin said. "I'm glad that Shelly understands our constituent base the same as I do."

Manchin went on to say Obamacare needed fixes but that he opposes the Republican repeal measure.

Around 30 percent of families in West Virginia are enrolled in Medicaid and both senators are worried about the impact the GOP health care bill will have on their constituents. Either way, no matter how you feel about the bill, blaming women and tossing out duel threats is probably not the best strategy, especially when someone responds that their pistols are loaded.
