SC GOP Chair Katon Dawson with SC National Committeman Glenn McCall.
Ada M. Fisher, the NC GOP National Committee Woman, who also happens to be African-American, has endorsed SC GOP chairman
After word spread that Dawson had recently resigned from a whites-only golf club, SC National Committeeman Glenn McCall, a black Republican, defended Dawson from his critics.
(Dawson now has the endorsement of 2 of only 3 black RNC members).
Fisher's endorsement letter is as follows:
Dear Mr. Dawson:
I asked each candidate I met to call me and discuss their desire to move the Republican Party forward. I promised to let folks know on the 15th of December of my choice for the national party leadership. I realize that the official vote isn’t until January 28th, however, I believe that with all that leads up to the holidays and the inauguration, we must hit the ground running. All candidates with whom I interacted or who asked for my vote submitted information on why they wanted the job. I looked at six basic issues:
Leadership and Party Discipline as well as plans for raising the kinds of money such a race will require as being paramount. Issues -- the eight principles of our party needed to be articulated as should an understanding of the party platform for I believe we as a party lack Message Discipline which has prevented us from speaking to the needs of all Americans, particularly middle class citizens, in a manner consonant with our values. Inclusion of concerns of the party at the state, county and local levels where the impact of what we do must be addressed and seems absent from the RNC. Your 3141 strategy focused on each of the USA’s counties gives us a base from which to build and can better target our divergent voices in a unified manner. Communications and Outreach will be the key not only to our winning races, but a tool for our survival. As part of this preparation for a new day in a better way, we must put citizens first while appreciating the changing population demographics of our nation. Candidates and our farm team are often neglected but are supposed to be a top priority of our existence. Your plan will give us the reserves and future focused leaders we need.
Based on all the information provided, you, Katon Dawson are the only candidate meeting my criteria for being the RNC Chairperson. I am voting for you for the RNC Chairman’s position. I have been promised no committee post, have not joined any inside groups in making my selection, nor refused to meet or hear any other candidate who wanted my vote. [# More #]
As a 52 year old parent of teenagers, you are poised to effectively straddle the generation gap better than most. Your success as a small businessman is a reflection of the economic promise we must show as we climb out of a national recession and lift the personal depression being felt by so many. In taking your state’s Republican Party out of debt and raising several million dollars, you have exhibited the financial discipline required to operate effectively. Under your stewardship South Carolina Republicans won 8 of 9 seats for state wide office, elected the first African American Republican to their state house since Reconstruction, now has a Republican Governor and US Senator, and your state’s Republican National Committeeman, an African American (only one of three blacks to have such a seat during this term) had your support. I watched your interaction with your state leaders including US Senator Jim DeMint. I was impressed with the ease in which you interacted as well as appreciated the mutual respect which was there. That mutual comfort level with party leaders and members is important.
Within two weeks of the November 4th elections, all the RNC members were invited to Myrtle Beach, SC to hear from the news media, consultants and others who had much to say about the Presidential race. This was thinking ahead and planning based on facts not the often ill founded misstatements on such. In organizing this gathering, you demonstrated that you get the facts and then act. It has not been lost on me that others wanting to lead borrowed extensively from your ideas and that leadership you exerted. I was further most impressed that SC spent its own money developing winning ads for the McCain campaign, which if other states had adopted, may have helped turn the tide. I have never had problems getting a call returned or speaking directly to you and this accessibility is important if we are to have a responsive party organization.
You have shown leadership not only in taking the initiative to see that our presidential candidate got the best packaging, but you were also first as an RNC person to ask for transparency in the Obama camp in the wake of the Illinois gubernatorial scandal. Your tone was not mean spirited but took it to them based on openness. You showed the same in informing me of your previous country club membership noting you resigned on principle when it was disclosed to you that their charter would not allow blacks to join.
My vote will be for you Katon Dawson because your Dawson Plan is the only one that hits on each issue raised in a positive manner consonant with the principles of the US Constitution and Republican Party. Looking at the young people you had involved and utilized in making party ads, staffing, etc. I was impressed with your ability to find talent and let them show what they can do. Understanding the challenges we as a party face, I was impressed that you pulled together the people needed to operate efficiently and effectively as well as lay out issues we as a party face. You were on point.
The RNC in my opinion has been stiffly formatted with the staff seemingly doing all the work and member’s voices not adequately heard nor requiring that we the members do the work for which we were elected. Mr. Katon Dawson you have delivered in this realm as well.
Lastly I was impressed that you have shown not only leadership, but vision for as it is written, “Where there is no vision, the people (and in our case, the party) perish.
You may feel free to share my support and endorsement of you candidacy as you please.
