In response to a question asked today by Fox News' Major Garrett, McCain advisor Randy Scheunemann referred to Obama's plan of engagement with Iran as, "disparaging our allies and engaging cowboy summitry with unspecified leaders of Iran."
The remarks occurred on a conference call today with McCain supporters, including Senator Joe Lieberman, Representative Eric Cantor, and senior foreign policy and national security advisor Randy Scheunemann. The purpose is for them to discuss Senator Obama's remarks at the AIPAC conference in Washington, DC, today.
The speakers all agreed Obama's remarks today were delivered well, but Lieberman noted there was a, "disconnect between things Sen. Obama said today, particularly in regard to Iran, and things he has said or done earlier… "
He went on to note that Obama, "compared Iran and other rogue and terrorist states to the Soviet Union, and minimized the threats …”
Lieberman also noted that Obama disparaged the Klye-Lieberman Amendment, which called for designating the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization, as "saber rattling." Lieberman added: "I still hope he will say that that vote was a mistake, and that he would support that resolution.”
The consensus seemed to be that talk is cheap. As Rep. Cantor noted, "McCain has thirty years of experience, and is unwavering of his support ... of Israel."
